Title: M14 stocks
Post by: viperrt1 on May 10, 2016, 09:37:38 PM
So I got 2 M14 stocks in and they are 11010263 sykes. They need some work but are use able. I looked them up and it seems they are NM stocks that might be rare. Is the true?

They due weigh in at 3.2 lbs which is good .2 lbs more then other ones I have seen.

Thanks

Rare in this case doesn't mean expensive. NM stocks will likely have bedding compound all over them and will need to be scraped, sanded and rendered to be used for your purpose.

I am very aware rare does not mean expensive. They don't seem to have bedding compound but they could use TLC.

I was trying to find out if A. They are NM stocks for sure and B. If there rare maybe they are not the stock to improve my wood working skills on.
If they are rare I'll probably find other stocks to practice on first.

The NM M14 stocks I have seen on USMC rifles were not wood. One could use wood, but a real NM rifle would be bedded at the lugs at a minimum. I have the 1967 guide to NM Rifles that came in the competitors packet at Camp Perry that year. It specifically calls for bedding for the receiver for the M1 and the M14.

My NM M1 is skim bedded into the the stock.
