Hello and thank you for looking.
I ran into a problem when using hasty sling on my rifle. The strap seems to twist needlessly. I believe this is caused by the strap going into the QD and then into the female on the Magpul CTR stock. Hopefully shown in the attached picture. I believe what I need to use is a stock where the rear sling lies in line with the trigger like the second attached. Is this correct? Any suggestions on stocks?
Second question. i assumed that the sling should go as far forward as possible in order to steady aim. Is this correct?
Thanks in advance.
Does the sling twist interfere with your use of the rifle? If not, it doesn't need to be fixed. Where or how the sling attaches to the rear stock is not important, as long as it works for you. If it doesn't work, try another option.
Stock selection is an individual preference. Personally I liked the CTR a lot, until I started using it for appleseed style shooting. Then I discovered that it doesn't give as good a cheek weld as a fixed stock- the under diameter telescope tube is where my cheekbone should be when I'm nose to charging handle. On my 15-22 I finally settled on a magpul fixed carbine stock, which works much better for me (this does require filing a 1/4" notch into the underside of the stock tube to allow the stock screw to fit).
Magpul's flippy sights are cool and all, but if you still have them I strongly recommend the A2 sights that came with the 15-22. They are EXCELLENT for our style of shooting. They give tool-free 1/2MOA clicks. I can't name another 22 rifle that offers this- especially on factory sights. When zeroed correctly, they also offer a huge elevation adjustment. From a 25yd zero I can adjust my rifle in a few seconds to 200yds (it's about 36 clicks up), and then just as quickly return to 25yds. Can't do that with magpuls. (I hang a 12" x 12" steel plate from a sawhorse and shoot it at 200. It is a lot of fun to shoot 22 at long distance, and a great validation of your shooting skills. Other 22 rifles will do it also- but most need a scope to be able to dial in the 20 or so MOA elevation necessary to hit that far.)
As for the forward sling mount, again place it where it works for you. There is no real advantage to having it further forward. I have mine about 4 1/2" in front of the mag well, and I use it as a handstop. That way my support hand is always in the same position on the rifle.

Do you mean that because the rear QD swivels 360 in it's receiver the sling gets twisted up in ways you don't intend? You could mount a fixed loop on the rear like the one you show - shouldn't make much difference if it's on the side or the toe, although side-mount imparts less canting force should you ever need to shoot hasty from prone or sitting.
Is it possible to build up an epoxy "bump" behind the existing swivel to block the wire "loop" so as to limit it from swiveling a full turn?
Thanks for the replies.
@AZMule. I am sorry I did not articulate myself correctly. The QD goes into the side of the Stock putting in at least one twist. I notice it and it bothers me but I don't have the experience to say whether it is actually affecting anything. I expect the sling to go front to back without a twist. If it doesn't make a difference then as always thank you for your time. I don't believe the QD rotates in the slot it appears to be well captured.
@MostlyHarmless - If it doesn't matter where it attaches that is excellent and thank you. I may play around with the other stock to see if it feels better (confidence.) That being said I also like the fixed Carbine Stock. I bought it before my CTR I liked it a bunch I just did not want to pay the extra money for there QD adapters (obviously if I had done more research into it before purchasing it I would not have felt as burned when they did not fit.) So instead I spent even more money on the CTR. I may try out the Fixed Carbine Stock (in practice the CTR kept catching my beard) see if it gives me a better cheek weld. I can always find a way to mount it (not like the polymer would mind if I set in a screw type swivel in.)
About the sights. I still have them I did not know that they were that easy to adjust. I can try them Sunday. I am anticipating having to go to the next shoot with a scope though. I am 36 and have been wearing corrective lenses for most of that. So trust me I would rather shoot with irons as long as they come with a good set of eyes. If I can qualify I will take off the scope and play with irons for the rest. Lastly once I have a moment I will move that front sling attachment and see how it runs.
Thanks again for looking and all of the advice.
Ok, I see - yeah, it's a natural inclination to think that the sling *should* be flat front to rear, it does look better that way, but the more important consideration is that it be consistent and comfortable (i.e. not twist or dig in against your body anywhere) while you are slung in.
For what it's worth, I leave a (counter-clockwise from front to back) half-twist in the sling of all my rifles, whether they are mounted to the side (AR) or toe (all the rest) of the stock, because the sling then will lie flat and untwisted when it is wrapped around my left arm in hasty. I just like the fit better that way. (Of course it would have the opposite effect should I need to shoot left-handed - ambidexterity is one argument for leaving it flat, but the side-mount kind of precludes that anyway.)
Also, since you have a QD swivel on the rear, you could get rid of the clip and attach the sling directly to the swivel - the clip is just another "QD" for use with rifles like the M1/M1A that have a fixed loop on the rear.
Thank you for the further clarification! Hopefully tomorrow I will have a chance to experiment with it and practice.
After an appleseed event, i went out target shooting. I used a hasty sling vice loop sling and lost the screw the the rear stock somewhere in the field.
It wouldn't bother me much because the loop sling is great but... i miss it when lugging the rifle around in the woods.
Quick disconnect is the way to go. I'm fairly sure the rear screw wiggled out because of tension... a swivel on the rear would prevent that.. so now i'm in the market.
