Title: Elberton Georgia KD September 12-13 aka "Hay Seed"
Post by: Ramblin' Wreck on September 18, 2015, 10:41:49 AM

Elberton, GA KD September 2015 aka the "hayseed"  ;D

We had another great weekend in Elberton, Georgia honing the rifleman skills our forefathers had in abundance. The Graben River Farm venue is absolutely beautiful and it's always a treat to shoot there. The property owner, Mr. Charles, could not be more accommodating to the point of loaning us 3 of his golf carts to transport shooters back and forth to the target line. Thank you sir!

We started Saturday with 15 shooters in the quest for the KD tab and an instructor crew consisting of Rusty, Morpheus and yours truly. As always we began with a classroom block on Saturday with Rusty covering one of the 3 tasks of a rifleman, trajectory, or making the shot including BSZ.  After insuring every shooter knew where the holes should appear at distance the line boss for the day, Morpheus, gave the safety briefing and we moved down to the 25 yard line to confirm zero settings.

The range is a beautiful flat area that doubles as a landing strip at times and is 1,000 yards end to end. After zeroing we moved back to the 100 yard line to shoot sighters and stage 1 and the same thing at 200. The first indication we might have some challenges came at 300 yards. Mr. Charles cuts this field for hay and it wasn't time to cut yet so the grass was just a tad too high to see the target line from prone position across the firing line. In true Appleseed fashion we improvised, adapted and overcame to shoot at 300 and 400 yards. If you can't cut the grass you elevate the shooter.  ;D  Pictures below.

Saturday wrapped up with Morpheus delivering his awe inspiring performance of Patrick Henry's "Give me Liberty or give me death" address. If you've never heard this you owe it to yourself to work a shoot with Steve where he's doing this. The day ended with instructors and shooters taking over one end of our favorite Mexican restaurant in Elberton. The owners are always glad to see Appleseed in town.  ;)

Sunday we started with a quick review of SHF's for all positions with Morpheus instructing and Rusty modeling. The ole Wreck did a block on range estimation using only what's on your rifle and we got back at it on the line.

At the end of the shoot we had one new KD Rifleman, Lance, and one re-qual by fellow instructor Free. Men who know very well what they are about.

Thanks to Rusty and Morpheus for doing the heavy lifting and thanks to Lawdog for coming all the way from Louisiana to shoot with us. It was a pleasure sir. Also, a big Thank YOU to Dustin A. for bringing the trailer to haul shooters and equipment back and forth. That was a big time saver.

Hope to see you all in Pelham, Calera or Talladega at the next KD. HUZZAH!

Excellent class. You and Rusty are excellent instructors. Even with the problems, I got a lot out of it. I hope to join y'all at the CMP range next year.

I always look forward to meeting other instructors and to seeing how they run an event and tell the history.  I certainly wasn't disappointed at Elberton.  The group there is as fine a bunch of folks - shooters and instructors - as I have met on the Trail.  To say they remind me of the Isaac Davis Range crew in their quality and commitment is to pay a high compliment to both groups.

Thank you for the fine instruction and the energy-boosting camaraderie.  I look forward to seeing you all again.  Until then, stay safe and keep your Weed-Whacker handy!

What a great weekend. I learned and got to apply so much at this event. It was a pleasure to be on the line, despite a little tall grass. Nothing compares to the chorus of HIT when tapping the steel at distance. I look forward to seeing everyone again at Talladega.

I also have a chrome Arrow stapler without a name on it that was left in a golf cart. If it's yours, get in touch and we'll see if we can get it back to you.
