Title: Boston's Gun Bible
Post by: Weezer on February 14, 2015, 11:15:43 PM
I have an odd question, asking on behalf of my husband (off topic: I really have to get that man to sign up for his own forum account!).   A friend of his recommended Boston's Gun Bible, written by a fellow named Boston T. Party  ;D, and told him to get the 2009 version (which is a revised edition of the original 2002 version, I guess).

For a little background on my dear hubby, he spends all his free time shooting, cleaning and lovingly caressing his firearms.  When he's not doing that, he's busy researching, tinkering with, talking about and drooling over photos of more firearms.   I think his dream woman at this point would be a rifle shaped lady wearing a bikini, but I digress...    **)

Anyway, he's on a mission to find this book and is having trouble both with astronomical pricing on Amazon and figuring out which version he's getting.   Anybody know about this book?   Is it worth the extra money to get the updated version?   Is it even worth owning?

I think it's out of print. It definitely needs revising, even tho it references 2008 dc v. Heller it still misses the past ten years of AR innovation post AWB. A lot of his dings on the AR  have been solved by new ammunition and other technologies.

I'll give you the TL;DR: m1a is Thor's hammer, fal's are nice, ak74>ar15, glock .45 all day long.
You might suggest to your husband that he borrow this one

Reminds me that I have to return fisherdawg's copy to him.

Thanks for your input - I wondered if a 2009 revision might be a bit dated by now.

Orale Weezer!!! :cool2: Wow I just happened to have my 2009 copy in my hand when I saw your post . The book is is not outdated and worth reading. Yes he is hard on the ar10 and and ar15, and yes he puts the M14 and FAL  above all others. But he writes about many other types of rifles, and handguns, old and new, surplus weapons and gear, reloading and self defence, weapons accessories and more. Heck chapter 19 is How To Become A Rifleman with writings from Fred. Now this pre AS stuff but its their. The book is very patriotic and is not politicly correct. Some stuff in the book has already come to pass. But this guy was writing about prepping before prepping was cool. You know, me and your husband, we could hang, you know what I mean. If I like the book, he will like it too, and my copy is not for sale or barrow. Sorry. Orale Ya'all

I'm working my way through the 2009 version a friend gifted me.  From a reference book point of view on the older mil-surplus rifles and the selfdefense information I think either version would be good.

I will agree to a point with both of the above posters.  I would currently buy an AR 10 platform over an M1A. (Sadly not the Smith & Wesson M&P 10 with its very ambidexterous features but barrel problems.)

All of Ken Royce's books are very expensive.  So far "Molon Labe" has been an interesting read.

Here's one on fleabay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Boston-s-Gun-Bible-/201285897630?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2edd930d9e

It might not be the latest version which you seek, but it's only $35.

I've been hearing good things about the dpms gII recon. Problem with ar10s in general is that they're not standardized with each other at all.

Kenneth Royce should be camping with friends memorial day weekend in Wyoming. The event is called Free State Wyoming Jamboree, or FSW Jam. The event will include shooting, a libertyseed, presented by Longrifle and some conversations with freedom minded people.
Boston will not be giving any speeches. In the couple of meetings I have had with the author my assement is, He is a man focused on writing.  When he delivers a thought, he wants to give it clearly, and completely, to do that he writes. Not that verbal, and good with firearms.

I still see 'em for sale at pretty much every gun show I attend - there, he could not only easily check the version but also look through it and decide for himself.  My opinion - though a few things may be a little out of date, those are few, and there is still a wealth of info that is easily referenced.  Worth it!

I speak a little AR10. AR10 is actually a fiercely protected copyright. It refers only to Armalite rifles. As to compatibility, there are two basic groups - Armalite AR10 and all others, such as DPMS. Most parts on either type are interchangeable with AR15.

One of the primary differences between the AR10 and other .308 ARs is the mag dimensions. The AR10 was initially offered during a time when mags of more than 10 rounds were illegal to manuafacture and Armalite chose to use modified M14 mags, as there were lots of them around and they were grandfathered in.

Boston claims the AR10 to be useless for any purpose - they foul up after 200 rounds according to Boston. This would be one of the few areas where I would disagree with Boston. As a result of his assertions, I ran 1060 rounds thru an Armalite AR10, cleaning only the bore to avoid any damage. I have the log and  pics to verify the testing. The AR10 performed flawlessly - not a single issue of any type and showed no signs of any future issues.

I can recedommend the Armalite AR10 with zero reservations, but I have seen a high % of issues in non-Armalite .308 AR type rifles. Likely plenty out there that run perfectly, but for me - I will always stick with the original AS (After Stoner) AR10.

One caveat. Like any non-adjustable gas operated auto-loading rifle, the AR10 requires specific pressure in order to function without issue. It is designed to run on M80 ball. Yes, it will work with reloads and some commercial ammo, but only if the pressure is within tolerance of the gas system.

The AR10 enjoys the ergonomics and adaptability of the AR15, but has the punch of the M1A. The M1A has several advantages over the AR10, but overall, I prefer the AR10.

Other than the above opinion, I find Boston's "bible" offers a wealth of invaluable info.  O0

I disagreed with his knife recommendations . He badmouthed knives that Ive have given me value and good service ( cold steel) and recommended some custom made item that IIRC required 400 and a long wait .

As a side note cold steel president (Lynn Thompson ) has donated lots of items (boxes) knives etc for an early AS event on Independence Day .

El Tejano,

Where in Texas are you?  I think I'd like to get you and the hubs together for a playdate.  With rifles.   **)   We're in north Dallas suburb (okay, we're in the sticks) and I drive to Waco for shoots just because Scuzzy is such a cool shoot boss (my apologies for driving right past Floyd's DFW events!).

Thank you all for such valuable insight, information and fleabay links.   **)     My husband, who really enjoys reading over my shoulder, decided to go ahead and open a forum account after seeing that "real men" are on here talking about "man stuff".  You know, just like at the Appleseeds he attends.   Thanks for helping me convert him!

Now go look for him under "NJRefugee" and tell him how awesome his wife is.   O0

Hi,

I wanted to thank everybody for the feedback.  Also, I thought I would take the opportunity to affirm the earlier comments about my love of shooting, reading reviews of stuff that shoots, and making sure my stuff shoots right.  Takes a lot of my time.

Outside of that, I sometimes hear what sounds like a female voice telling me something.  It can interrupt my shooting-related thoughts, but it often coincides with the appearance of food so I don't mind it much.

Ok, ok... My wife IS awesome!

You made me look to find my copy, it was in the Appleseed traveling library, and look for the publication date, thank you very much.

I have read mine often, but like everyone knows, everyone has an opinion, so I use it all with just a grain or two or three of salt.

What I have always liked was having a signed copy from the author at an Appleseed event in far off South Dakota. Made it special, especially since it had to fit my motorcycle bags as I had a long way to go to North Carolina.

It has some good information in it.  Ignore the percentage rating of each gun and just concentrate on the factual information he presents on the guns.  IIRC he advocates for getting training over gear.  Which is the way it should be.
.
BTP's perspective on the application of riflecraft is extremely limited.
.
As long as you don't consider it Gospel, it has good info in it.

Orale Weezer!!!  :cool2: I am in Fredericksburg, where we have our next AS shoot on March 21-22. It's a bit more of a drive for you, but we would be happy for you and hubs to come to one of our shoots this year, we have a great crew and a great range. And Fredericksburg is the ultimate tourist trap, might as well make a week of it.
