Title: 7.62x39 long range.
Post by: viperrt1 on January 18, 2015, 11:45:10 PM
Does anyone have long range load for x39? I found loads for 135 gr and 150 gr. But was thinking 150 gr bullets be to heavy.

I use factory Wolf or Tula 123gr for long range.

What are you shooting it out of viperrt1? The solution for a Ruger 77 or CZ boltgun will be different from an SKS, ak, or other semi?

Also please define long range?

Sorry Mini30 and 400 yards.  Kd long range

Are the mini-30's still .308 barrels?

Nevermind, it looks like after 1993 they were .311 or so.

I knew people who used the 150's for hunting. But realistically, the 123 should be fine out to 400.
Title: Re: 7.62x39 long range.
Post by: viperrt1 on January 19, 2015, 12:30:57 AM
Thank you. I wasn't sure 123 was ok for 400.
I was going test out with 308 vs 310 vs 312. And yes mine is newer 581

I had friend with sks that love 308 even though it was 312.

By all means, test them. That is always the best way to develop a load for your rifle. Start sensibly, keep good records and monitor for pressure signs.

If you are loading your own, I would likely try the 123's. 130's and 150's if I could get the bullets and had the time.

Good luck.

So far factory loads the Hornaday sst been best by far at 100 yards. But for 600 yards the golden bear been great.

However that was before I shot competitive and reloaded. I should be able to develop better round.

I was going try Hornaday 123, serra MK123,135,150,
I was also worry about 150 creating op rod issue like on garand when you go above 180.

Just be sensible and careful.  M1 could be built to shoot 190's and the Navy did just that with their 1000 yard guns in the 60's.

Post by: viperrt1 on January 19, 2015, 04:20:50 AM
Ya I know the m1 can or can be made to 180+gr shooter. However it isn't $20 part, that is easily changed. Like the m1 is.

Was just wondering if it's same thing with mini. I figured it would be. After all its same idea behind the two.

So I'll try the Accurate 1680. And some 123-135 bullets.
Only odd thing Hornaday says 24 gr for 1680 is max and Lyman says 26 is max. Accurate says 28 is max

I was hoping for some feed back on combos that worked for people.

I will post out comes of my findings. Maybe it help others out.

Well first run.

Ruger mini 30 581
Iron sights bench rest.

Winchester brass and large rifle primers.
Hornaday 123gr 310 Dia interlock sp
C.o.l  2.200inch
Accurate 1680
5 shot groups 100 yards

23 gr    4 inch group
23.5 gr .6 inch group all touching.
24 gr     2 inch. Good group
24.5 gr .6 inch 4 touching 1 called flyer.
25 gr    4 inch group recoil started to be noticed but not bad.

So being able to almost get half moa with soft point not bad.
One thing to be noted both the 23 and 25 gr shot center. The others shot about inch high and inch right. So 2 o clock.

I hope next week to try SMK 135.

I'll keep you all posted

Update 1/30/15

Sierra match king boat tail hollow point 135 grain. 308 diameter C.O.L. 1.85 (the max I could load this was 1.95)
CCI BR2 primers
Winchester brass
accurate 1680

All nra 100 yard target SR-1. @100 yards. all iron sights all off bench.

21    grain  4.5 inch groups
21.5 grain  3.5 inch groups
22    grain  3 inch    groups
22.5 grain  2 inch    groups
23    grain  1 inch    groups
23.5 grain  key hole groups  O0  Recoil was notice able now
24    grain  1 inch    groups
24.5 grain  key hole groups  O0
25    grain 2 groups may be shooter). but the 2 groups were under 1inch respectfully  [I'm pretty sure there compression loads]
25.5 grain key hole groups in the same whole as 24.5 group.  O0 **) that was most amazing thing. [I'm pretty sure there compression loads]

I personally stop at 25.5 grain. The recoil was bad and the brass was flying with enough force to act like super ball. There was no primer signs of over pressuring. but any one that knows Ruger's knows they throw brass. and this was bad even for Ruger.

also the other stalls started asking guess the bark was getting bad.

nice thing though. at 24+ grain. it started kicking up huge clouds of dust at the back wall.

all in all 23.5gr is good over all load. get job done and not beat me or the gun up.

Now for my long range. I might feed girl 25.5 but then again the 24.5. Ill have load up some 24.5 and go to longer range and see how she drive down the lane.

Once you get your trajectory mapped out would you post it here please?

I'm always intrigued by the way this round flies so differently from different platforms and in different loads.

Sorry I need bit of clarification of your definition of trajectory.

What I thinking you want is like (example) I take my SMK 135 with 23.5gr.  sight in at say 100 yards. then see the drop at 200,300,400,500,600. Is that what your asking?

Sorry I just deal with lots of people in the science/engineering world. So trajectory map can mean different things then in the shooting world.

And muzzle velocity if you got/can borrow a chrony, please.

What size target are you shooting x39 at 600 with?

A note on .308 in .310-.312 barrels, I mic'd my sks barrel and the lands were right at .300, so I assume for awhile it could shoot .308 no problem. Maybe not later in its barrel life, but... I think it depends on the particular rifle. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That fun thing about x39 try 308 and 310+ if shoot 308 it's cheaper and easyer to find. But all rifle depending. And yes to a point as barrel wares the 310 will get you bit more life.

I don't have a crony nor do I know any one who does so. I'll ask around

The target size I was thinking just use sr-1 nra 100 yard. At 600. But that me.

Is that the 200 yard reduced for 100yard one or the 600 reduced for 100yd one? I'm talking about when you found golden bear was good for 600yds. What was your group size?

Oh lol the golden bear was while ago. I was braking clay pigeons. But I had scope at the time. I shoot iron now. But back then we just put them up and hit them every time. Clay Was Under 6 Inch So Sub moa

Yep. Ruger mini 30 581 line. There are few issues but everyone that write articles are wrong as proven above.
It's not the barrel getting hot that creates inaccuracies. It's 2 things. One the stocks are not good fit and will shift around. 2 steel case ammo doesn't like hot chambers. Same thing happens in other guns.

Will POI change after mag drop yes. But all guns do.
So many people bad mouth them for so long other people believe it.
Today at range there was guy with mini. Shooting 3 inch groups people said not bad for mini. I laugh placed few bets and drilled moa group of 5 at 100 yards. First 5 I shoot too. No tricks here.

I have never seen rifle that can't shoot 98% of time it shooter 1.5%ammo .5 % is it the gun

Yes all caliber can. It's quality control..  think about all diffrances with x39 steel vs brass 308vs310v312 on and on so its finding what works. a buddy shot his sks sub moa. It had bit of work. It wasn't big 5 special.
Also harmonic matching. Every gun has its sweet spot.

Plus take look at article. In pictures the scope to far back. His head is on a spot on the stock that has no way "sitting" on. Remember why you turkey neck. Head placement and repeat ability is key. He can't in his setup.

Good new yall I found person with corny and he willing to let me use it. It be few weeks but ill get some numbers for you. I think he only going to let me do muzzle velocity. Which is ok by me I don't want to shoot his gear.

Was going to do 23.5 24.5 and 25.5gr powder charges using 135 bullets.

Mini 30 7.62x39 18.5 inch

First ball park test. 135 gr SMK 1680

23.5gr ~ 2150 fps
24.5gr ~ 2250 fps
25.5gr ~ 2350 fps +

25.5 not sure I think crony made error but 2 where 2471fps 3 where 2350.fps I think 2350 correct. Looking at all the reload data.

Take it for what worth.

So round easily good for 600 yards.

Using JBM Ballistics, here's your dope for the 24.5 gr load.  Windage is MOA/10 mph FV x-wind

Range   Drop   Windage     Velocity
(yd)        (MOA)   (MOA)     (ft/s)
0            ***              ***    2257.4
100      0             1.2           2042.1
200        -3.3             2.6           1835.1
300      -7.7             4.2           1634
400        -13             5.9           1445.6

I use factory Wolf or Tula 123gr for long range.
I have had issue with FTF with tula and wolf so ya no go there.

That's a fairly common issue with Mini-30's...  A lot of times a hammer spring upgrade will do the trick, otherwise you could research other tips and fixes if you want to be able to shoot it reliably.  Then again, since you're a reloader you can make your own cost-effective reliable ammo.

I've been thinking, for awhile now that a Mini-14/30 would be far superior to a .22lr when talking LTR's.

It's black box wolf. Aka tula ammo. I don't think it's really mini issue. If you look at FTF the primers are seated to deep.

So if the tolareances are that bad I wonder what else the tolareances are off too  :(
But ya I reload so no issue. Also bear ammo and wolf military classic worked fine.

Was gonna type an Ivan Chesnokov inspired rant, but it got too silly. You're not gonna get close tolerance out of russian ammo. I've weighed out silver bear and had greater than 5 grain differences between individual cartridges (so which component is off is the question?). Also those are some hard primers so there's your ftf

Maybe I missed something here, if so, forgive me.  But Wolf is not the same as Tula.  Wolf is excellent ammo, and Wolf supports Appleseed.  They provided us free ammo at an Atterbury KD to the tune of 14K rounds.  No ammo failures of any kind in that round count.  I shot two LD RM scores with it and so did several others.  It is the only ammo manufacturer that I know of with a full refund (including shipping) if you are not satisfied.  Tula is junk.  Don't get them confused.

For past 5 years on 7.62mmx39 wolf black box is tula. And military classic is brown bear.
Black box is head stamp wolf.
But military classic is stamp brunal which is bear.

On 7.62x54mm wolf gold was ppu and stamped so.

This may not be case for all caliber.

Groups should be good if I can predict wind. Now that will be the issue
