Title: "Best" trigger springs for lightening the AR's trigger pull?
Post by: Mango on January 17, 2015, 04:12:41 PM
What are the "best" trigger springs for lightening the AR's trigger pull?  I was looking at the JT or Wolff trigger springs (keeping the stock hammer spring to have consistent reliability).

I will not cut the hammer spring (poor man's trigger job) because I am concerned about reliability from light primer strikes.  I will not buy an expensive drop in trigger assembly.  Thoughts?

I cut my hammer spring on one of my ARs and never had a problem with light primer strikes. This was on a 6.5 Grendel that I shot in matches, after a year or two I broke down and bought a proper fire control group that was not much better feel wise to my poor man trigger job. You could slam the butt on the ground and the hammer would not drop , so I felt that it was safe to shoot.

JP Enterprises, http://www.midwayusa.com/product/579878/jp-enterprises-trigger-spring-kit-ar-15-3-1-2-lb-reduced-power. This does the same thing as trimming one side except it allows the hammer to hit the firing pin flush and not off balance as trimming would do. Some people have had a lot of problems with the spring trimming. Keep in mind that if you reduce the tension on the hammer by any method, you may have light strikes on some types of ammo. It seems to depend on the individual rifle.

When you consider that the Rock River national match trigger can be bought for $100 or a bit less I'm not sure I'd spend much time or money on anything less. The RRA trigger is no geissele but it's outstanding for the price.

I run the jp yellow springs with an alg act combat trigger. It's nice as far as AR triggers go, I would rate it between a poor man trigger job and the RRA trigger a buddy has in his AR. If you add up the $65 for the alg act trigger and the $10 for the springs it's getting up towards the RRA price. Just a range tool or a defensive carbine ?

Oh shot some 300 rounds of American eagle 55 and lake city 62 grain last Sunday at AS and no primer issues, however guy next to me with same springs and palmetto lpk trigger was having issues with 62 lake city ( different batch then mine) . Food for thought

Another option is the ALG QMS trigger (http://algdefense.com/quality-mil-spec-trigger-qms.html). At $46, you won't find a better value 5.5lb mil spec trigger, and ALG is a subsidiary of Geissele so you know it's high quality.

I bought the $46 ALG trigger; it is a minimum 5.5 lbs.  Looking at the parts, I preferred the Stag Arms hammer (looked better quality- I can't explain).

I also bought the Wolff reduced trigger spring set, with came with a reduced trigger spring and reduced disconnector spring.  I had a problem with the trigger resetting with the reduced disconnector spring; it appeared shorter than the stock spring.  I didn't used the disconnector spring.

I kept the stock hammer springs and the stock disconnector spring.  I used gun grease for the trigger.  The trigger pulls feel lower than they actually are because the trigger is so large.

Results:

Stag Arms (slightly polished)  5-5.5 lbs
ALG trigger (untouched)  6.0-6.5 lbs

The starting trigger pulls were around 7-8lbs.  I would prefer a lighter trigger pull, but I do not want to affect reliability.

I've tried all kinds and flavors, but in my experience I have learned more and improved my marksmanship to a greater degree using a trigger with a pull that's on the heavier side.

That grip screw trigger adjustor from Joe Bob's reminded me of something I've read on the interwebs about a 50 cent AR trigger job ... here's the link for those who like to tinker with their rifles ... http://junkyardgenius.com/firearms/ar-15/ar08.html

You do realize that you are quickly approaching the cost of a Rock River National Match trigger, that would have been perfectly safe and 4.5 lbs to begin with. $79.95 with free shipping.

I have the Rock River National match trigger in every AR lower around the house.
