Title: Takedown rifles and Rule #1
Post by: Big John on September 15, 2014, 04:46:15 PM
Small topic came up at Knob Creek this weekend. Shooter converted a 10/22 takedown model
into its separate components at the line when rifles were being retrieved and stowed the parts
in the Ruger half-size takedown case/bag and left the line that way. The shooter was asked to keep
the bag vertical, which he did by slinging it over his shoulder and carrying it the way it was designed.

My mistake is that he took the rifle apart while it was facing downrange, but then the bag was oriented
such that he flipped each half of the rifle around 180 degrees to insert into bag, when he should have
rotated the bag, packed bag while keeping rifle parts pointed downrange, then lifted it vertical.

Takeaway is that a taken down takedown rifle is still a rifle and parts should remain pointed in a safe
direction while packed. Minor point to be sure.

You might be over thinking this.
Under torture I might agree that the disconnected barrel should be pointed in a safe direction, there is barely a possibility that it could fire. More likely a round left in the chamber and "cooking off" will spit out the brass in fragments. The other half of the rifle is of no concern when disassembled.
I am sure I will be beaten for this but I consider a disassembled take-down to be safe. No worry about carrying the case pointing up, no flipping the case to insert or remove the rifle.

Is it really a rifle? Isnt the receiver the rifle and the barrel just an accessory? Although, the muzzle is the only thing that matters as far as our safety rules go.

Personally, I dont care where theyre pointing once theyre cased but it is important for the muzzle to stay downrange while casing.

I think this one can go in the "Not that big of a deal" category. Broken down it was about as useful as rock.

Oh absolutely not a big deal. That's why I put "minor point to be sure" and "small topic."

Just discussion of minutiae.  ;)
