Title: Niles, MI July 4-5, 2014 AAR
Post by: Oz on July 04, 2014, 08:32:13 PM
What a great Independence Day in Niles!  Zazzles and I were not on the roster due to family commitments but managed to sneak down for a few hours at the end of the day to meet old and make new friends.  Hopefully we can make our way tomorrow as well...a few photos in advance of the main report:

On the line

Honest, there was enough for everybody

Taking care of our border rai...is it really border raiding if you're coming from Georgia to Michigan?  Seems like a genuine expedition.

Nice job guys.  O0

Fabulous shoot. Weather was perfect and we had Popsicles  ^:)^ and the "6'" minimum sadly doesn't exist yet. I am still not there. But close!

What a fantastic event!  Our shooters were eager and willing learners.  The weather was perfect (although it did get a bit overly warm on Friday afternoon.)  All in all it was a great event.

Steve and Brenda both showed remarkable improvement and I expect both will score rifleman next time around.  We look forward to seeing you again soon.  Nancy would have no doubt scored rifleman as well, but rifle issues became a problem.  (see picture on the lead fouling we pulled from her rife.)  Duane came as shooter this weekend rather than an Orange Hat and re-qualified for the first time with his new AR.  Well done, all.

Big Country it was great having you and the event and thank you for make the trip all the way up from Georgia just to help us out.  You made a real difference in the shoot. Come back up to the land of ice and snow any time and help.  (Yes, it is cold in Michigan - just not in July.  ::)  )  A big thank you to Pitmaster who made sure we had all we needed.  Thank you also to Oz and Zazzles who took a break from family responsibilities showed up in the midst of the Friday heat with - ICE CREAM!!  What a treat!  Zazzles also did a wonderful Whitemore D.O.M. on Sunday.

A huge thank you to Bend of the River Conservation Club for hosting this weekend's event!  If you haven't been to Bend of the River, make the trip.  It is worth it.

What more could you ask for on a 4th of July weekend than getting together for fun, learning, and celebrating our American Heritage?

It was our pleasure being there.  Thanks for having us.  You represented MI Appleseed very professionally and we were impressed.  I also love that you included Zazzles hair bow on Skydog.  Great facilities, eager shooters, great instruction, not safety issues.  Aside from the one rifle problem, it was an absolutely great weekend.

I'm so glad we were able to poke our heads in.  You get to know the best people at Appleseed.  BORCC was, as always, a great place for the event.

Steve and Brenda, you were great to work with and clearly soaked up the instruction.  I know you're looking for another event, and I hope I'm working it.

Nancy, it was great to see you on the line again (and also to see your relations peeking in on Sunday.)  I have to believe Tom's new mission in life will be to get to know your 10/22 and the next time I see you it will be thoroughly well behaved and let you do what you do and earn that patch.

Duane, great to meet you--I'm always happy to see young folks who know what they are about and are already pitching in!  Congratulations on qualifying with your centerfire!

Big Country, awesome meeting you, thanks for making the trip, and travel safe and Godspeed for your upcoming endeavor.  You're raising a fine young feller--make sure you both take advantage of that state of the art indoor range in your new community!

Graywolf and 3.Dogs--as always, it was a pleasure working with you.  Until next time, gentlemen.

Pitmaster, Tom/Nehemiah, Denise/RugerRat--fantastic to see you as well.  We should do this more often!

Thanks to Zazzles to coming with me, sprained ankle and all!

Part of our new "Grenadier" immersive experience...thought we'd roll it out on the west side and see how it worked!   -:)

Just wanted to let everyone know what a GREAT time we had in Niles. Brenda and I are already talking about when we can come back to another Appleseed Event. I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all of the Instructors, Shoot Boss, Bend of The River Conservation Club, and last but not least ZAZZLES for saving me with popsicle's. Everyone worked hard to help me get very close in two days. I am looking forward to what I can do if I go to another event. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

What a TERRIFIC TIME!!!  I just had to chime in here and let you guys and gals know how much I enjoyed the event!  Making plans for the next one for sure!  Thanks to the instructors for being so patient and taking the time you did with me.  I learned so much... not just the shooting techniques, but the history lessons as well.  You really bring the Civil War to Live and thanks Zazzles for your sharing!  You did a GREAT Job!  Big Country-  Thanks for driving all the way to Michigan to spend the weekend with us.  You really were able to talk me through some things and I appreciate your encouragement.  Be safe and many blessings to your family on your new adventure   ^:)^  Oz- You are amazing the way you pick up on the little things and are able to bring those into focus.  Thank YOU!  Three Dogs, thanks for your diligence and being able to share both the historic events and how they tie into real life.  :)  And let us not forget GrayWolf our fearless leader... Your passion for the events (present and past) truly make an impact on those you are around. https://appleseedinfo.org/smf/Smileys/newsmileys/popcorn.gif  I appreciate your challenge and call to "do something... get involved"  It was a pleasure spending time with each of you and I so look forward to seeing you soon and figuring out where we will fit into the Appleseed family!  Blessings to you all! ;D  Brenda

Nancy would have no doubt scored rifleman as well, but rifle issues became a problem.  (see picture on the lead fouling we pulled from her rife.)

Was it a squib that was smeared down the rifle? did it come out of the chamber area? that could have got ugly fast.

We are not sure what it was.  In all probability it was not a squib that smeared down the barrel given that the problem reappeared over the course of the next day and we were able to identity it when it happened (i.e. groups started to widen out, eventually bullets started to keyhole, etc.)  We removed the rifle from the line when it began to occur the second time before the buildup could get to the point it did the first day when we discovered it.  The build up was located just past the chamber almost like the bullets were rubbing when being chambered or something.  None of us had ever seen anything like it.

do we know rifle type and ammo type? i am thinking (  #) do i smell smoke  #) ) a short chamber and longer then LR spec ammo. maybe feed ramp not right. i take any ideas just to put in the tool box.

and thanks for posting it for others to learn

Ruger 10/22 with ammo starting with "R" (Not the golden kind though.).  We suspect feed ramp issue given the nature and placement of the leading Big Country knocked out of the barrel.

O0  O0 thanks  O0  O0  for the info i use a 10-22 with ammo that starts with "F" that likes to make a thunder clap that is straight lead and i get something like this ( not as bad) but after about 1000's of rounds, no cleaning, just trying to find out what is wrong with mine other than not cleaning it like i should  :-[  :-[

thanks again O0
