Project Appleseed

Friday June 27, 2014, 4:37 AM...WHY is my alarm clock buzzing? I'm a teacher, this is summer vacation and I don't get up this early. As I inhale a whiff of fresh brewed coffee (pre-set timers on coffee brewers are the second best invention ever, right behind the USGI web sling) the fog lifts from my brain and I remember it's time to make the riflemen!

8:30 AM Lapeer County Sportsmen's Club: I'm saying the Pledge of Allegiance with a group of patriotic Americans who have come out to learn marksmanship and the history lessons of April 19, 1775. It doesn't get any better than this.

In short order lead was headed downrange at high velocity. History lessons were listened to intently and thoughtful questions were asked.

5 PM Saturday June 28, 2014. Riflemen were made. Congrats Mike! 213 at your first Appleseed, that's impressive. 211 for Neil, who had previously scored rifleman with a scope and was doing it this time with iron sights. Caliper, 212 (I think) very impressive as you were shooting left handed, which is something new for you! Superheat, an impressive 206 with the MacRifle.

Everyone improved, everyone was safe, everyone got a chance to hear that lovely PING of hitting steel at 200(ish) yards! That was fun. We packed a lot into our short time together. To the new and repeat riflemen HUZZAH! To those who aren't quite there yet...practice, you'll get there.

This was a great group of shooters to work with and I hope to see you all again.

Special thanks to state Senator Mike Green for coming out to spend Friday morning with us. And to the Lapeer County Sportsman's Club for hosting us. And to Roundballer for once again explaining what lock, stock and barrel is all about and letting the students shoot your musket.

A rather unique Friday-Saturday shoot that was a lot of fun to come out and shake off the cobwebs after a long hard winter and spring.   It was a lot of fun putting faces to the names of people I've been in contact with on other forums (Chris & Neil) and through other contacts (Sharon)  It was also fun to meet and work with our youngsters who were products of one of our home school promotional events earlier in the year. Both made great progress through the two days.

Everyone learned and progressed toward the elusive "Rifleman" patch with Neil reclaiming the patch with iron sights this time  (a beautifully setup Tech Sighted Marlin 795) and Mike shooting a Tech Sighted 10/22 to earn his patch at his first event. Huzzah!

Got a chance to play with Number 6's  50th Anniversary Contest rifle and was impressed with how well it felt and shot.

Overall another great event at Lapeer.

Another great two day shoot!   Hats off to Mac66, Hammer and Number6 for the best three strikes I've heard. Well done!

Glad to see shooters enjoy the event and eager to improve their skills. 

Just like Corpsies, I too am impatiently waiting for me next Appleseed event!

I blame the extra kick on me not realizing the scope mount is backward.  %)
