Title: Australian Ammo 7.62x51 1970
Post by: TaosGlock on May 20, 2014, 02:33:01 PM
Just discovered 2 cans of the stuff I had stored. Got in 2004 IIRC.
Head stamped 70 L2A2. No NATO cross.  Ammo cans say Australian Government L2A2.
Not a compressed load, sounds like a ball powder.   I did not pull any as I am too cheap and mil-surp ammo has all but vanished.

Thru the various M1A's I have had over the decades, most of this type ammo runs 2750-2800fps, even up here at 7100".
But his stuff virtually roared across the chrony screens at a sizzling 2880 fps with only 40 fps ES!

For accuracy, I set up our 25M squares, got in a slung up prone (loop) and this ammo shot about 2MOA by 1MOA. WoW!
This was from a 1972 M1A with a Saco NM barrel.
Most of this type of mil-surp, etc. ammo is 3-4 MOA at best and some like the readily available new manufacture PMC is 4-6 MOA, at least out of my rifles.

Anyone else have experience with Australian ammo?

I shot a good bit of it years back. My recollection too is that it is better than ave milsurp accuracy. Didn't chrono it. If your gun likes it and you've got a stash of it, save it for a rainy day!  BeSwift
