is there an alternative to vet wrap for building up the cheek rest on the rifle stock. After some time in the sun it becomes very sticky and causes a reaction on my face........ as long as it never gets sticky I am fine.
Cotton bandage on top of the vet warp, perhaps?
I may also try a different color, wondering if the dye is causing the reaction.
I have designed an alternative to vet wrap. It consists of a Kydex cheek rest held in place with Velcro straps. You adjust the height by how much foam or other material you place between the Kydex and the comb of the stock. Then cinch the straps down and it does not move. It is quick and easy to adjust and is a one-time expense. The picture shows one designed for both the Ruger 10/22 and the Marlin 795.

are you making and selling them?
I've been using Magpul cheek risers to build up student's rifles. They're made for Magpuls AR stocks, but they work very well taped in place on Rugers, Marlins and Remingtons as well. They come in three sizes, and all the tacticoolest colors. I have one of each size, and on must shoots I could use a half dozen more. It isn't necessarily the cheapest option, but they are fast and convenient to use.

A stretchy Ace bandage would also work well as a replacement for vet wrap.

They are still in the prototype stage, but yes, my intention is to manufacture them. I have tried one at several shoots now and it did the job. I just have to refine my production process.

Just installed this on one of my Marlin loaners.. Required drilling big holes in the stock. I like it and think UL is on to something going the velcro route.. http://www.diproductsinc.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=111998&CAT=3603

There's also this type of slip-on cheek rest (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/129354/blackhawk-hawktex-tactical-ambidextrous-rifle-cheek-rest-fixed-stock-rifle-nylon-black) that doesn't require any modification. This one has a nylon finish, I've got another that's sueded leather for those who don't like the nylon feel.
I have this one on my 700 and an M14 stock and am well pleased with it.

Here are some cheaper ones, but I don't know about the quality

My wife is a vet tech so I've tried a bunch of different brands. In general the solid colors become less sticky than the printed ones. I wrap them over strips of blue closed cell foam with beveled edges for a smoother fit using an initial wrap of electrical tape to hold firmly in place. You should be able to find simple non dyed vet wrap from farm stores that might be less sticky. They use it to wrap horses legs.
Ok this gives me some ideas, UL's idea looks like something I can make with my kydex press, would be pretty easy to mold to each rifle. May give it a try and see what happens. The Magpul option looks interesting as well.

What about plain white? I'm assuming that has no dye in it.
I'm intrigued by the Magpul riser, with a turkey neck aren't the students cheeks further forward on the bare buffer tube portion of the stock?
RF 24, The cheek riser UL is working on should work great. I have a similar product on my Rem 700. No complains whatsoever. If you are still considering some kind of tape, in the past I've used the type baseball players use on their bats. It does an adequate job. You can get it at Sporting Goods stores (I bought my roll from Dicks. Mole Skin (you can find it at CVS, Walgreens, ...) also works good.

That would depend on how long they have the stock extended I think. Someone with short arms using the first or second click out might not, but someone with long gorilla arms that has it extended all the way probably should be.
I use a VLTOR EMOD on the second click out, and my cheek weld is mostly on the buffer tube. The transition point gives me an extra index to know that I'm always in the same spot.
I bought one of these for a .308 AR style rifle with a high mounted optic: http://www.laruetactical.com/larue-tactical-risr-reciprocating-inline-stock-riser (http://www.laruetactical.com/larue-tactical-risr-reciprocating-inline-stock-riser)
The long operating handle throw on the AR-10 rifles greatly interferes with putting a cheek riser where it needs to be. With this riser, I can shoot with my nose to the charging handle and still work the charging handle. A bit pricey but then it is LaRue Tactical and they do make good stuff.
If it's an AR type rifle, I would recommend a Magpul or LaRue type stock riser piece (as stated below).

I have no issue getting a consistent cheek weld on my AR or on my 10/22 (which has an AR style stock), but on my Marlin bolt gun, I purchased a cheek rest from Blackhawk that has worked very well; it stays laced up nice and tight and is real comfy to smash my cheek on. I would recommend it for sure.

I've got one of these on my 10/22 loaner:

You have to take the action out of the stock to get the neoprene sleeve in place, but once that's done you can peel it forward to put the foam pads in place to adjust rise - it comes with a "kit" of pads of various thickness to choose from.

The issue with the Magpul risers on ARs is the charging handle. The riser will block its use unless the stock is extended to nearly the end of the receiver tube. But if your arms are long enough to run the stock out there, the Magpul risers can be a practical option.
They work great on S&W 15-22s (whether or not the rifle has a Magpul stock), and many of the 'tactical' style stocks for the 10/22 and similar. But much more often than that, my risers get taped or wrapped in place atop conventional/traditional style stocks as well.
Savage MKII is what I am working on now, 10/22 will be next. I have taken all your suggestions and have come up with an idea, I will drag the kydex out and the press and see what I can come up with and report back.
I use these on all my rifles. Very comfortable and you can put them over other padding to make them higher.

Buy them off ebay or from airsoft companies online.
