Title: Need some help please! Front sight posts and sizes.
Post by: grunt soldier on March 22, 2014, 12:13:43 AM
Ok I love my tech sights front posts. they are tiny.  smaller than even national match posts by a tiny bit.  My question is does anyone Know will tech sights posts work on standard ar sights.  Flip ups and all that good stuff.  I shoot pretty dang well with irons even with the standard 7 moa posts but I don't like it near as much.  The front sight posts for tech sights are much cheaper than national match posts also.

I guess I can always take one off and try to put it on but before I throw off all my zero's I figured I would ask as most of you guys have already tried the things I think of.  worst case I'll just buy a bunch of national match posts and throw em in there.

thanks in advance

National Match sights don't refer to a specific size. NM sights are usually designed with an undercut so that the front is lower than the rear of the blade to help eliminate glare. Some are very narrow, others medium and other wide.

The tech sights that I have measured are around .040 they were also A1 rather than A2 front sights. So if you have an A1 front sight, they could work.

If you have an A2, the easiest solution is to by a narrow NM sight from somewhere like White Oak. http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/xcart/product.php?productid=17704&cat=287&page=2

You can get a .040 NM front sight from them.  That being said many shooters prefer a wider front sight, and standard combat sights for the AR are .070 (or so). A wider front sight is easier to focus on.

Yeah I'm kinda in the minority from what I can tell.  I looked at white oak and only saw the .050 post.  I much prefer the smaller .040 post on my tech sights than the standard .070 post on the AR's.  I'm running standard troy flip ups and LMT fixed sights.

Thanks for the link.  I think I'll give that post a try on a few set up's and see if I like the smaller post or not.  I thought the main difference in National match sights was the 1/4 moa adjustments but I'll admit I don't know much about them except they usually had the small post and more finite adjustments.

It is important to understand that match front sights are only useable on one side because of the undercut. For this reason you have to move one 5moa to make an adjustment (even though they are 1.25 moa per "click". The rear sights may be 1/2 moa or 1/4 moa. Most shooters these days go with 1/4 because there is no difference in price. But if you come from an M1/M14 background those match sights are 1/2 moa (with the flip up set).

I have an A4 upper with a factory F-marked front sight base.  I replaced the 7 MOA A2 post with the Tech Sights 4 MOA A1 post, and love it.  It works great.  FYI, A1 and A2 posts are completely interchangeable.  The big difference is that when you go to a 5-detent A1 type post, you get 1 MOA clicks instead of 1.25 like with a 4-detent A2 post... and an A1 post is round, while an A2 post is square.  So yes, you can put the TS post on any FSB that takes a standard AR-15/M-16 post... which would include almost all aftermarket front sights.

The rear sight I use is a KAC 2-600m folding sight, and I love it too.  It has all the adjustability of a factory carry handle sight, in a nice compact folding package.

The front sight that I shoot in the service rifle is .072. That works out to about 12MOA or the full width of the 6 foot target at 600 yards. It has helped me alot in the past year as I have fought creeping astigmatism.

What can happen when my eyes are tired however is that when I reach respiratory pause at 600 the target distorts in such a way that it is difficult to tell if I have NPOA. However, recently I remembered some advice from VAShooter. In 1969 during the HighPower competitive season, he dropped no points at 1000 yards shooting an M1. He also used that M1 to come in second in the Leech Cup against shooters with match rifles, palma rifles, etc. He told me that depending on the light sometimes he only had a second before the bullseye disappeared. In those times he needed to trust his NPOA and make the shot quick. When I took that advice in the third match of a 3x600 for my last three shots, I shot 9,10,X.

Focus on the Front sight, trust the NPOA and make the shot. The guy in the video who changed his front sight and shot cleans in a match without sighters is Nate Guernsey, he is a distinguished rifleman and world class long range competitor.
