Title: Garand scope mount
Post by: Duncan on February 15, 2014, 11:51:53 AM
Sorry guys if this has been answered 100 times. Searched and really didnt find anything. Any recommendations for a Garand scope mount with no permanent mods?
Thanks

Duncan,
I have not used this one, but it sure looks interesting.  Add a Leupold long eye relief pistol scope ....

Fisherdawg & DEH thanks for the links. Both of these look very promising.  O0

I know S&K builds one, and I would suspect B-Square has an offering for the Garand as well.

I own the S&K offering. Save your money. You can not get a proper eye relief with a good cheek weld with any scope I have found.

CMP USED to sell Garand scope mounts out of their annual catalog - was discontinued several years ago - still think there may be link to company making same for Garands, M1 carbines, etc...Brownells also likely.

PS  For RHIs:  2014 IPP info available from Ruger, Smith, and Thos. Center.  Awaiting others - announcements to be posted on TIPS - send pm w.email for me to forward.  Happy shopping.

I don't own any of them yet but I've been doing some research (soon, I will have to scope my Garand as well) and it seems that the ultimak sits lower in relation with the bore axis and, most likely, is the one I'll get.

I have a scout style rail on mine.  I bought it from Fulton Armory, but I think it's a rebranded Ultimak
http://www.fulton-armory.com/handguardrearsuperscoutrail.aspx

The rail replaces the upper handguard and you can always swap the wood back on.
(Don't plan on doing it often, as those upper handguards are rather thin and will break eventually - be careful)

It is easy to install and rock solid.  I set it up so the back end of the scope is just in front of the opening on the receiver where the clip goes.
Make sure you measure your eye relief to that spot before buying a scout style scope.
Many of them are designed for pistols and the eye relief is set up for being at arm's length, not the 8"-10" that the rifle would be.

Yep, the Ultimak is the lowest you can get.  That is a big advantage... you don't want to have to build up your comb to get cheek weld.  The Ultimak is low enough that you can actually co-witness a low mounted red dot sight like an Aimpoint with the factory irons.

If you were to put a low mount red dot on it, would it co-witness?

I know DrJohn uses a "scout mount" style to great effect with a leupold pistol scope (I think). Perhaps a PM to the good doctor. He's a senior instructor and a fine shot with a Garand.

After some research I went with the UltiMAK rail, Burris handgun scope & Leupold QRW rings. The UltiMAK is a little more pricey but looks to be a better design than the Amega.  Thanks All.

I am planning to put an RMR on my other M14 so this is why I am looking.  I've known at least two Instructors who had the Ultimak on their Garands, but they both had scopes on them.  Dr. John was one of them.

BTW:  From what I can tell the Fulton Armory is rebranded Amega.

Ya, I looked at Fulton and saw they were selling Amegas. Had to buy UltiMAK straight from factory. Nobody has any.

I did this same exact set-up (but added a synthetic stock and a Karstens cheek riser) and it works fairly well. The only draw back I find is it throws the balance of the rifle forward. The project was to get a scoped battle rifle in 30 cal with hold overs to 500 yds  and using surplus ammo and all for about $1000 bucks and in this regard the project was a success.

You can still get Greek 30-06 from the CMP for about 65 cents a round, shipped. Limit 2000 rnds/year.
