Hi Everyone,
I have decided to purchase a CZ 452 for training and as my main Appleseed rifle. I want to shoot Appleseed with a bolt.
Today I found 2 in a local gun store. Both were CZ 452 and the model was listed as a "Military Training Rifle". It looked like it had a 24" barrel and they really fit me well.
I have a few specific questions:
1.) Is this the preferred CZ for Appleseed and training?
1.) Can you get Tech Sights for these?
2.) The rear sight is a military style sight and looks like that on a 1903A Springfield. When you add Tech Sights do you just leave the rear sight in place or do you remove it? How hard is it to remove?
3.) Can I shoot Appleseed with it using the OEM sight or should I replace with Tech Sights?
4.) I have heard about a model called a CZ Lux. Is this a higher end version of the Military Training Model?
5.) Is this rifle easy to connect a military style web sling too?
6.) Can you get extra clips for these?
Thanks,
If the responses are positive I may own one before the end of the day!
Thanks,
Dave
The trainer is a great rifle. Mags are available but a little pricey. Sights are actually usable as is. They are center mass from factory. This is probably one of the best values in a quality bolt gun. I attended my first AS with one and learned that scopes set for hunting don't work on an AQT. I pulled the scope and was still able to shoot 150-160 range targets with just one mag (all I had). I had signed up a week after hearing about it a gun show ......

Mike, Are they hard to find and are many people shooting them at AS? I heard that there is a fancier version than the military training rifle but it would seem that this rifle would be a great rifle for AS. I would get a few additional 10 rd clips and just go shoot it. My main goal is to improve my marksmanship and I like the additional challenge of running the bolt. I had heard they are very accurate. I might just purchase both of the 452's I saw. My son could shoot one and I'll shoot the other. I am planning to go to a riflemans bootcamp and I could bring the second one as a backup rifle. When I picked this rifle up it just plain fit me! I like the lux stock. I also picked up a Ruger American but the Ruger seemed like a toy compared to the 452 and the bolt of the 452 just worked much better and felt more substantial. Thanks for your thoughts! Dave
Cowpens, I have two CZ riffles (rimfire). One is a 453 the other a 455. Both are the varmint model. Both have 20 in barrels. Both have scopes, as my 1943 vintage eyeballs require it. I don't think you can put tech sights on them, as they both have dovetails (11mm) for mounting the scope rings. I don't know if you'll be able to find peep sights for them. The 1903 does have a rear peep sight, if that is what the rifles you are looking at have, you should be good to go, however I suspect what they have is the post and notch sight, in which case you want to change it; but is useable as is, only more challenging.
No problems at all with the web sling.
I have 5 round and 10 round magazines. Agree, pricey. I like the 5 round better. The events I've seen where a shooter only had 5 round mags, the stage was modified for that shooter. Instead of shooting 2 and then 8 on the rapid fire stages with a mag change, they were allowed to shoot 5 and 5. You'll have a mag change on the freestyle and the slow fire stages, but there is plenty of time.
I really like my CZs!!

Cowpens, I forgot to add that if you want to read all kinds of reviews on the CZs (the good, the bad and the ugly) try www.rimfirecentral.com.

To the OP, I have seen a fair number of CZ 452 Trainer / Lux at Appleseed, and they run pretty well. If this is the rifle that fits you, go right ahead.
M1 GI slings attach easily with standard 1 1/4" swivels. Tech Sights are available, but I would at least try the stock sights before making a decision -- the factory sights are pretty darn good, a rarity these days. It appears that you can leave the existing notch if you install Tech Sights. Don't know how difficult the process is, Tech Sights claims it's "easy" for whatever that's worth.
Spare magazines are a little expensive but are plentiful; you can get them from on-line dealers such as Midway and Brownell's. Apparently the plastic magazines work slightly better than the steel ones, don't ask me why. There are also aftermarket parts from DIProducts to "improve" the rifle if you're so inclined.
CZ also offers the Ultra Lux with a longer barrel (28"), but this doesn't mean a more accurate rifle. Instead, it means the rifle amplifies problems with NPOA and trigger control, because it takes longer for the bullet to leave the barrel! Good for improving the shooter, not so good for the best scores.
Personally I find the "hogback" stock to be annoying when shooting from prone, but for others it's great. I much prefer the straight stock of the American or Varmint models. Your experience may vary. My "other" .22 is a CZ 452 Varmint, which I have fitted with a Weaver K4 scope. It is an outstanding rifle and will destroy AQTs.

The CZ is a great rifle and if it fits you go for it. The CZ did very well at the CMP rimfire Sportster copmetitions.
If you decide you want a peep for the rear Daisy makes a pretty good one it will fit right on a rimfire dovetail they are cheap in price also and it will make your sight radius a lot longer I would not be afraid to try the stock sights

I have two and use them for loaners. I like them a lot.

Yes. One of mine wears Tech Sights, the other is stock.

You leave the rear sight in place. You do have to replace the front sight.

3.) Can I shoot Appleseed with it using the OEM sight or should I replace with Tech Sights?
Depends on what you are "training" for. In general, and for most people, the Tech Sights peep will be more accurate. However, if you are "training" for using a Mauser or other rifle with open sights, the stock sights will be a better fit.

4.) I have heard about a model called a CZ Lux. Is this a higher end version of the Military Training Model?
The Lux is a longer barrel (28" if I recall). Nice rifle.

5.) Is this rifle easy to connect a military style web sling too?
The swivels on it are 1", and the little holes in the swivel studs don't easily accommodate regular swivels. Remove 'em, and replace 'em.

6.) Can you get extra clips for these?
Midway has them. You can get both five round and ten round mags. The five rounders are all metal and built like a tank. The ten rounders are poly, but seem to hold up well.

Only downside is the trigger isn't wonderful. Good enough, but not wonderful.
I love my CZ-455 American, scoped. Different critter, of course, but same mags. You can use a yodave replacement trigger if you really have a problem with the factory trigger.
I have a 452 Lux. The only difference between the trainer and Lux is the wood -- Lux gets nice walnut. Both should shoot equally well. Mine is highly accurate... and I've never even shot it with REALLY good ammo. The factory sights are great. They adjust for windage and elevation with a small screwdriver -- elevation on the front, windage on the rear, and the rear is a tangent sight that will put you very close from 25 out to 200m with regular high velocity ammo once you have the rifle zeroed to match the distance on the sight. I actually don't consider the Tech Sights to be an upgrade on this particular rifle. They require a tool to adjust for distance (ball point pen, etc.), while the factory CZ sights are finger adjustable for distance with the tangent once you have them set. I use my CZ for a lot of things besides Appleseed, and at a lot of distances besides 25m, so I find this feature very useful. If you only plan on shooting at 25m, YMMV.
The "humpback" stock like on the Trainer and Lux is what you want if you plan on using the irons. The straight "American" stock with the higher comb is better if you're going to mount a scope... the names of the various models give some interesting commentary on CZ's view of the typical American shooter! &)
We currently have 3 CZ-452's in the house, including one with a Mannlicher-style stock and peep sights that my daughter uses for bullseye target shooting.
I've been using a CZ-512 for my Appleseed shoots. These rifles are easily capable of shooting 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards. I only wish that this shooter was capable of that sort of grouping.
This really answers my question too - I have 2 bolt action rifles, CZ 452 Trainer and Savage Mark II with scope and I just purchased a Marlin 60 cause I thought I needed a semi -
I was concerned because the Marlin is tube feed and I didn't know what kind of problems that would cause - I really like my CZ, its my main rifle - Looking forward to attending a event in Maryland this Spring.
for my 2 rifles - should I bring the CZ and Marlin or the CZ and Savage?
Thanks for posting
I certainly wouldn't leave that Savage home.
I've got a Savage 93R17, pretty much the same as a Mark II, but 17 HMR.
Suffice it to say that the next 22 I buy will be a Mark II.
That said, you have no wrong answers in front of you. Any one of the 3 is a good choice.
Rifleman scores have been shot many times with tube feds. And many times up here with bolt guns.
In your case, I would recommend the CZ for your first choice. You know it and like it.
well after much thought and reading many forums and blogs - I'm taking both the CZ and Savage. Thinking of giving the marlin to my grandson.
I just have a thing for bolt action and nice wood stocks - and the iron sights on the CZ I believe will be grea, and I have a scope on the Savage -
Now just going to save for a CZ 512

4.) I have a CZ 452 Lux (lefty!) and it's a higher end of the 452 line, but not specifically the military training model. It features a gorgeous walnut stock designed with iron sights in mind, and a 28.5 inch barrel. I shot my rifleman score with it, and it's really a wonderful little rifle.
6.) Yes! Magazines, including a 10 round extended version, are available from CZ's web store here: http://shop.cz-usa.com/cz-products/rifles/magazines/rimfire (http://shop.cz-usa.com/cz-products/rifles/magazines/rimfire)
It's hard to beat a CZ-452 for a bolt action 22. The workmanship vastly exceeds most current USA-made 22's. Mine is a CZ-452 American 16" that's threaded. I shoot it suppressed regularly. Never have tried it at an Appleseed, but the mags are good and feeding is positive, so it ought to work fine. Mine wears a Burris 2-7x ballistic-Plex . The reticle works great for holdover out to 125 yards with CCI Subsonics. Lots of prairie dogs gave succumbed to this whisper quiet 22!
Enjoy your CZ rimfire! They're top notch!
