Title: Backwoodsman Magazine Article
Post by: olefido on December 28, 2013, 09:57:16 PM
Did anyone see the article in the Jan/Feb 14 issue of Backwoodsman about Appleseed and tube fed rifles? If someone has pointed this out already please merge it with their thread.

http://www.backwoodsmanmag.com/

Picked it up today at Walmart and since I checked Thursday, I would say it's pretty new on the stands.

I have not seen it. Or any mention of it here.
Does the article contain info we can use to improve our program?

Most of them are written by Mass Ayoub, who attend an event in Hernando County Florida. Ever since, he has done an excellent job of promoting the program. He's a former serious LEO, turned instructor.

You may be thinking of Backwoods Home Magazine, which is out of Oregon.  The one Olefido is talking about Backwoodsman Magazine, which is out of Texas.  But what do I know; maybe there is a connection 'tween them?

No connection between them, Charlie Richie's "The Backwoodsman" is completely separate from "Backwoods Home Magazine." Most of the content in "The Backwoodsman" is contributed by readers. I'll have to see if I can find the latest copy. I am curious to see what they have to offer with respect to loading tube fed rifles.

You are correct UL, Mass Ayoub writes for Backwoods Home magazine out of Oregon, and yes PHenry; Mass has been to several Appleseed's both FL and OR  O0 .

I have not seen the Backwoodsman magazine article, but will check it out. They are similar in title, but very different magazines  ;) . Both good in their own way  :) .

My first rifle was Sears and Roebuck model 43, bolt action .22 rimfire, tube fed. Still the best trapline rifle I have ever owned  :cool2:  .

Thanks,
D-fly

THE BACKWOODSMAN story in the Jan/Feb 2014 issue, is titled "How An Appleseed Helped Me Speed Load My Marlin Model 60". It seems to be written by an average student and is quite good.

In the article they state comments like: "Last summer, I decided that I wanted to learn to shoot the rifle" and "In fact, I shot more rounds in those two days than I have in my entire life".

This student also covered a lot of the basic detail of the Appleseed marksmanship and history programs.

It is a FANTASTIC ADVERTISEMENT for the APPLESEED PROGRAM!!!!!

The article is written by a gentleman named Rick Hosmer. From reading, I believe he is a resident of Washington state. Other than the relevant info on the Appleseed program, his focus is on his discovery of using the aluminum arrow shaft as a DIY speed loader. He writes the article as though he came up with this idea on his own, although I have heard of the technique for a couple of years now at various shoots. Still, it is a very good article and very positive for the program.

So I went and retrieved my still new copy of the Jan/Feb Backwoodsman from the shelf in the one seat library and found the article.

Sounds to me like a shooter that really "got it".

He has the Six Steps in the article pretty well.
Mentions NPOA, use of the sling, and the emphasis on range safety.
He gives a nice little paragraph to the history.

And he mentions wanting to come to another 'seed weekend to breakthrough and earn his patch.
Endorses the program and even gives the address for the website.

Pretty good testimonial for the program in an outlet that reaches a rich vein of possible Appleseeders that may not have been exposed by articles in Shotgun News and Backwoods Home.

Might be worth looking through the records and finding which shoot Mr. Hosmer attended.
Might also be worthwhile to reach out to him and see what we can do to get him back on the line sooner rather than later.  I wouldn't be surprised to find a patch in hand leading to another article.  And a hat....

Perhaps Backwoodsman would be a good place for a print ad.
And if Marlin and/or Davidson's decided to run an ad for their 795 LTR at the same time...

I checked the Eventbrite records and he's not there.  Likely a walk-on.

Or took a pen name for the article.
Maybe Mr. Richie could put us in contact with the author.

FWIW...

"Backwoodsman" is a great (if simple) magazine full of great (if simple) articles about small projects and items of interest. They'll take submissions from almost anyone; I've even written for them.

"Backwoods Home" is more analogous to Mother Earth News in terms of content, but with a Libertarian (rather than Liberal) leaning. The articles are a bit more detailed and are written by and for folks who are practicing what they preach on their own land.

Both are good magazines and both have their place in my ongoing education and both are worth the price of subscription.

I read Mother Earth News every so often, since the local library carries it.  I could be wrong, but I wouldn't say that it is particularly liberal (in the contemporary sense of that word).  It stresses environmental friendliness, dealing with small and local businesses, living simply, and so on.  But I consider all of that stuff to be deeply conservative.  So while I've occasionally rolled my eyes a bit at some of the stuff in Mother Earth News, I've never found myself thinking of it as a liberal magazine.  Of course, I speak as a hardcore paleoconservative distributist.  If you're coming at things from a more neocon perspective, I'm sure you won't like Mother Earth News especially much.

If you have a 66 You might be interested in www.nylonrifles.com which I started more than 10 years ago. It is mostly about nylon rifles but lots of other stuff as well. I do however have lots of articles, field service manuals and history about the 66 and others nylon rifles.
