What do you do when you don't have access to a rifle range, and your subdivision backyard is a little over 10 meters wide? You get a Daisy M853 air rifle from the CMP. You then reduce the standard Appleseed 5-square target to 40% of original size and shoot it at 10 meters.
I fired the first round, called it good and did my IMC calculations. POI was 12 MOA low and 4 MOA right. Rifle manual says the sights are 2.4 clicks per MOA. I came up 30 clicks and left 10 clicks, fired the second round and called it good. Not perfect but in the black. IMC works, whether you're shooting an M1 Garand or a Daisy 853.

I love the the manual tells you how many clicks = what. I shouldn't be surprised since it's from the cmp but I kinda was. IMC live it and love it. stuff just works

What the manual actually says is "Each click of the micrometer adjustment results
in a .413 minute of angle (.048 inch) shift of pellet impact at 10 meters (33 feet)." The 2.4 C/M (I rounded to 2.5) is my conversion. I'd say that the figure given in the manual is pretty darn accurate. This is a really nice little rifle, and it came in excellent condition.

Hi UL,
What did they charge for shipping? I really like the 853's I got. If the wind is calm you can stretch them to 25 m.
CMP is having a push on the air gun front to bring more youth into the program and have opened a nice selection of riles and Pellets to CMP eligible members not just clubs.
The sights are great allowing elevation and windage with a turn of a knob no "tools" required.

It was $100 + $14.95. The amazing thing is that it was delivered to my door less than one week after I mailed in my order. I'll have to try to stretch the distance out when I get a chance.

that's easy Rayne. you need it for inside pest elimination where you can't shoot the 22's. besides do you really have to talk people into another gun :)
Or tell the hubby it's for the children. that always works! Your afraid you won't be able to buy cool stuff like this when your grand babies are older ect. you see what I'm getting at :)

UL, you amaze me! Do you ever sit still?
10 meters huh.....I could shoot all winter in the comfort of a heated shop...now how to talk the family into yet another rifle. :))
WHAT? A Rifleman seeking "comfort"? Your weekly flogging will now be doubled. ~~:)
UL
Ask Fred about comfort during a prep period in prone, on a firing line (non-Appleseed, by the way). It happens when you get bored. And, yes, prone can be quite comfortable, especially when you get used to it.
By the way, good idea on the air rifle. Smart move, and there's somebody that has learned to "improvise, adapt, overcome".
Four of the 853's followed me home from Camp Perry on my birthday a couple of years ago, one for each munchkin. Ammo savings alone can justify the cost. $4 for a tin of 250 pellets at Wally World. (Crossman pointed ones function ok the hollow points not so much in my rifles) The HN sport from CMP or Pyramid Air are much more consistent.
That is what I have gotten most of my trigger time with this year.
Great for teaching NPOA as it is broken each time you have to cock it. There are a couple of tricks like not moving your support elbow allow very quick return to NPOA in prone.
Enjoy
when I'm not poor and spending all my money on ammo I'm going to grab one of these bad boys!
GS, UL, et. al.,
Have been beating young Mr. Diamond's drum (Appleseed metaphor...sorry) for CMP's USED Daisy 853s @ $100 + $14.95 shipping for years. When coaching my school's Varsity Rifle team (back then HS had 5 point, 50 ft., rated to .38 WC range in basement - Deputy Sheriffs used to come practice at night) CMP GAVE us 15 of the 853s. We used them in ALL the PE classes, from 5th through 12th grade. If middle and high school students couldn't break them...NO ONE can break them - as well as with parents of team members on parents' nights, when shooters got to coach their parents, for a change. Daisys come with a decent loop sling - though have to add place for rear swivel, as only attaches in front of pump arm.
As pointed out - compared to even .22 ammo, pellets are dirt cheap...would nevertheless stock up with lead becoming the next ammunition issue...
FYI, Daisy had a VHS tape - now certainly a DVD, of complete maintenance for the 853 - shows a technician actually replacing seals, etc - a must-have for keeping these bargains running - until you can find a Feinwerkbau 300 (real, Olympic) target air rifle - the Grail of single-pump, no-need-for-a-SCUBA-compressor air rifle.
Best wishes for season, and order Daisys (and ammo) from CMP; will be putting in my Customer Service request for cases of their 2014 catalog as table and Appleseed candy when it's available.
Excelsior,
madMark/nyrasgt
PS My local FFL (50 miles N of Albany, NY) still has several Marlin 795 Appleseed LTRs @$275 tax included, out the door. PM if interested.
