Post by: Arrigetch on November 19, 2013, 08:04:18 AM
I stumbled across this, thought it would be a handy thing to print out for some folks:

I assume that this is for a 55gr FMJ bullet.

Good info... though that chart is wrong on M4 windage click values (it should be 3/4" at 100 yds.).  I find that not very many AR owners know the click values of their sights (especially carbines).  Heck, most instructors probably don't remember the click values for all the different variations of sight radius, front sight style, rear sight style, etc.

While that chart gives the exact values, I just remember that carbine length sight radius with a square front post has 1 1/2 MOA/click on the front sight, and 3/4 MOA/click on the rear sight.

Rifle length sight radius has 1 1/4 MOA/click on the front if the post is square, and 1 MOA/click if its round.  on the rear windage, rifle length sights have 1/2 MOA/click with A2 style windage knob, and 1 MOA if it's the old A1 type with 5 detents.  For elevation on the rear, it's 1/2 MOA/click if its a detachable carry handle, and 1 MOA/click if it's fixed.  Also, the large aperture is supposed to be 2.5 MOA lower than the small one.  On carbines, this ends up being a little over 3 MOA.

If you happen to see an old Commando type carbine with the old A1 style round front and 5 detent rear (some after market companies make detachable rear sights in this style too), they have 1 1/4 MOA/click on both front and rear.

1 1/4 and 1 1/2 are easier to remember than 1 3/8 and 1 7/8, and are close enough for zeroing purposes.

Don't forget about National Match style AR sights that offer 1/4 MOA clicks for elevation and/or windage on the rear.

Several companies also make a NM front post.  It is thinner, but also if you look really closely from above, it is shaped like a trapezoid.  The idea is that there is one edge of the post that should always be facing the shooter and that the sides and top taper together away from the shooter to give a cleaner sight picture.  This post is designed to only be adjusted in full turns (5MOA) at a time.  If it is turned only one click on the front, the shooter will be left with a front post that is slanted...

Well Caliper, that explains the funny shaped front sight on my Colt HBAR. Makes me glad I added a 1/4 minute match rear sight  ;D

I'd assume it's for M855, because they're using the military designations - but this would likely get you close for either.  Remember, your own results will vary.

Pop-quiz:  Why is it obvious that this chart was not formulated by a Rifleman?

Haha.  I got one on a used Armalite NM I bought.  It was turned sideways when I bought it...

To be honest, I found I preferred the wider GI front post and swapped it out.  Easier to focus on for my eyes.

Aftermath: Indeed!  I'll let one of the IIT's answer.   ;)

A rifleman is perfectly comfortable working with the language of MOA or milliradians.

Correct, though, I'd say a Rifleman doesn't need to know mils unless they have them on their rifle.  One can be a rifleman without ever looking through a mil-dot reticle.

Reported values are :
Carbine : 3/4 MOA-click (windage and elevation)
Rifle: 5/8 MOA-click Elevation , 1/2  MOA-click windage

Something is amiss in the reporting...  If the clicks are the same for wind and elevation with a carbine sight radius, why are they different on a rifle sight radius?  Is this just a product of rounding off, or a math error?

I don't have he instructions card at hand but found the attached picture in internet...I swear I read "MOA" somewhere but the values are actually measured @ 100 m (corrected the orginal post)...

I'll shot a box with a carbine to confirm the values... Unfortunatelly I do not have an A4 to test...

There is some rounding going on.... Take a look at their metric values
