Michigan: Senate Judiciary Committee Unanimously Approves to Lift a State Gun Ban
On Tuesday, the Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved Senate Bill 610 that would lift Michigan's ban on the private ownership of short-barreled rifles and shotguns. Short-barreled rifles and shotguns are strictly regulated under the federal National Firearms Act. Therefore, by repealing this longstanding state gun ban, Michigan law would conform with federal law, and align Michigan with more than forty other states that already allow their resident to possess these firearms. Short-barreled rifles and shotguns are subject to restrictive regulations including requiring their buyers to undergo a background investigation, pay a $200 tax and register these firearms with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
The NRA applauds the Senate Judiciary Committee voting to repeal this gun ban. Since SB 610 is now eligible for consideration on the state Senate floor, please contact your state Senator in SUPPORT of Senate Bill 610.

Hmmm, my AR pistol works pretty well as a pseudo SBR and can be carried on my CPL. I understand that a SBR will be considered the same (other than the federal thing) as a pistol so will be kosher for CPL as well. A pseudo SBR is not a real SBR so yeah, I think I have some paperwork ahead of me.
My son is already planning a side folding AR15 SBR in 300 Blackout with a QD barrel and suppressor.

We have a member of the club that has contact with Pavlov. His name is Greg, he is the guy that does the table and chair rentals. I think it would be a great idea to get him to an event somewhere.
I have already written to our Senator, to express appreciation for his support, and urge a change in law that would override the AG opinion about how overall length is measured. I have not received a reply yet.
I have high hopes for this one, it is needed if we are to attract any firearms manufacturing into the state. I have been urging others to support this on the concept of "jobs".
Oh, and Mac, from a strict reading of the bill, it may be legal to have those firearms (with folding stocks) that are not SBR/SBS under the NFA, but are under 26" collapsed. We would have to register them "as pistols", so the whole "Michigan Pistol" thing may come back. The range of the lengths will change, but they may come back.

Oh no, not the Michigan Pistol thing again. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes that go through that BS again. So here's the thing. If I put a folding stock on my Uzi I would have to register it as a pistol (many of them already are even though technically they are considered a SBR in MI). However, if the OAL is longer than 26" I don't have to. Oh, and since I have ten days to register it, I could take the folder off during that time period and start all over again when I wanted to use the folder again, or not.
So why not just make Michigan law compatable with federal law in terms of OAL? Because that makes too much sense and our legislators would be out of a job if they started being sensible about laws.
Oh, it will be even worse than that. All NFA SBR/SBS will also have to be registered, as well as those that are SBR/SBS by Michigan standards, then add in the fact that it is the pistol database, and the pistol forms.
A: Do I need to see a Federal Stamp or something from the guy I am selling to?
B: So, what are you selling?
A: It is an UZI, SBR PISTOL!
B: A what? How long is the barrel, and the OAL ?
A: The barrel is 16.1" and it is 24.5" folded, 34" open.
B: Sorry, everywhere outside of Michigan that is a carbine, it is just a short one that has to be registered in Michigan.
A: No, it is a SBR Pistol, I have the registration!
B: OOOKay, (fumble around, post a bunch of links, explain it all again)
A: Oh, so if the guy has a CPL, all we need is a RI-60?
B: Well, yes.

That is why I wrote to my Senator, I even suggested language to insert in 750.222 "Definitions" that would alleviate some of this issue with the OAL question. That, and to thank him for his support in co-sponsoring this bill.
