My first Appleseed I used a Ruger 10/22 with a Nikon Rimfire scope. I was off by operator error. I just added the Volquartsen extended rail using the same scope with maximum upward adjustment allowed I am still 5" low at 25yds. Scratching my head, it appears that the rear std sight interferes with the extended rail. I find lots of videos on how to remove the front sight but not the back sight. Help please.
Looking forward to 2nd Appleseed 9/7 and earning my patch at Rosebud.
Jerry
Same as the front, knock it out left to right...O.L.
It really helps if you have a set of barrel holding padded vise clamps to hold the barrel. Use a good punch and a hammer large enough to move the rear sight. I use a two pound hammer myself. :)
If you use an EGW cantilevered rail you don't have to remove the rear sight. Get the 20 MOA rail to make sure you have enough scope adjustment if you ever intend to shoot longer ranges.
Another good investment is a Triple K leather comb riser to give you a good cheek weld.
To remove the rear sight, knock it out from left to right (just as you would for the front sight).
However, I must ask, why you need to remove it? Can't you use the Weaver mounting rail that came with the 10/22 to mount the scope instead of the Volquartsen extended Picatinny rail? Or does this create a problem with eye relief?
I've mounted tens of rimfire scopes to Ruger 10/22s and only needed an extended rail on 1 (my Volquartsen custom 10/22 with the carbon fiber barrel); however, that rifle is over-scoped which is why I needed the extended rail. With a Nikon rimfire scope, you shouldn't really need the extended rail.
For the first Appleseed I I had it on the std rail but I needed farther away for the eye relief.
I apologize for the newbie/stupid question but I really don't want mess it up. You're talking about using a punch and knocking the end of the pin out in the side of the sight to release the top of the rear sight correct?

IMHO, the OEM rail from Ruger is a waste of time. You can't get a proper eye relief without moving your head back and forth to get a clear picture through the scope. There is no way you can get a "Turkey neck" using it. Then you'll wonder why you get "flyers."

That is one way. Not sure if the base would still interferer with the rail.
I knock the entire sight off the barrel and replace it with a blank to fill the dove tail. Most times the sight is fubar when you do this. I get a few off intact but not often.

O0 O0 O0 For those asking why...It's very difficult to get a scope mounted far enough forward on 10-22's for many people. The OTHER option is lengthen the stock which has the same effect....O.L.
I put the extended sight rail on my 10/22. I din't need to remove the rear sight. I just folded down the rear sight. Am I missing something with this question?

If you look at the pic the objective bell is touching the sight when folded. So the choices are to tap out the sight or buy a scope with a smaller bell.
Mine doesn't touch. I got the 20 MOA rail and it works fine.

The OP is using a VQ rail. The VQ offering is longer than the EGW unit you linked too. I mentioned this in my earlier posts.
I have both mounted up on rifles. The VQ WILL NOT work on a stock rifle without removing the rear sight. the EGW WILL work without removing the rear sight. ;)
2cl, if you look at the top picture you can clearly see the RAIL setting on top of the rear sight and see a definite gap between the rail and the receiver. How is a smaller bell on the scope going to correct this?
Sorry brain fart.
Yes I saw the rail touching but typed objective bell.
Darn auto-correct. **)

JerryH - I knew you would get those questions answered here! See you in Mo.

Thank you everyone for the replies. Rear sight is off, Scope back on and zeroed (as best as possible at the indoor range).
Now all I need is time at an outdoor range to practice sitting and Prone (Busch Wildlife I think).
Then my brain and body to corporate at Rosebud, MO so I can get my patch!
