Hi Ladies and Gents,
Got that lovely CMP green package last week. Took it out and disassembled for cleaning and function check.
This is my first (and honestly I'm only thinking of one) Garand and I got the service grade Springfield. Was just hoping to have one and pass down a well made shooting rifle and certainly have fun shooting it.
The receiver serial # is SA low 1million which I read is a bonus as it was used in WWII
Barrel is SA made in Feb 1954. All appropriate stamps are there. The thing is, the paperwork said the barrel wear is 0+ AND after inspection and cleaning, the barrel does not have a nick, scratch, discoloration, or any kind of wear. It has not been used before.
The stock is common and nothing 'collectable' to worry about. It is in way better condition than the 'CMP Service Grade 'description though so I'm happy.
My question is: IF the barrel is unused, is there a higher value for this Garand and if so, should I not shoot it? Or, it doesn't matter and just enjoy a barrel that should last longer than one that was shipped with a 3 wear?
Thanks
Oh, CMP took off being able to buy separate barrels.
Which will make you happier: Leaving it in the safe, hoping it will pay off some expense you might have far in the future? Or enjoying it by using it as it was designed to be used? Seems to me with such a nice barrel you could use it in high-power rifle competition.
My own answer is the second. I don't believe in buying non-producing assets as investments. Investment money goes into businesses and farmland that will produce dividends and sustenance in good and bad times.
The tolerance for a new barrel can give a reading of -0.0005" to a +0.002".
Your M1 went through a rebuild sometime in 1954 (or there about). It has no more collectors value than any other rebuilt M1. Shoot it and enjoy. ;)
What Douglas said!
Shoot it and enjoy it.
If it has a new barrel that just means that you need to shoot it more. >:D
Thanks all.
I'm glad everyone said to shoot it cause that's really what I am itching to do. ^:)^
