Title: Need a cleaning rod to check for a bore clog
Post by: TomM1Thumb on August 16, 2013, 12:26:34 PM
I found that the cleaning rod from a Mosin Nagant will fit in a 22 cal Barrel, an Sks cleaning rod fits also

Tom,
Someone came up with the idea to use heavy weed eater nylon line. One advantage is that its readily available in our pocket.

Where did you find the mosin rod and does it work with standard jigs?

The other benefit of the weed eater line is that you can put it in the barrel from the chamber side and steer clear of the muzzle.  It is good for checking only, of course it can't clear an obstruction.

I would be very hesitant to use a Mosin cleaning rod.  It is steel and steel rods against steel bores/muzzles are NOT good for accuracy.

Use aluminum, brass or carbon fiber and save your bore.  It isn't worth the $10-20 savings to ruin your rifle barrel.

I bought one of these: http://www.brownells.com/gun-cleaning-chemicals/cleaning-rods-amp-accessories/cleaning-rods/rapid-rod-prod25573.aspx (http://www.brownells.com/gun-cleaning-chemicals/cleaning-rods-amp-accessories/cleaning-rods/rapid-rod-prod25573.aspx)

Folded up in its pouch, it fits neatly in the tool pocket of my range bag. I keep a plastic bore guide attached to it to prevent damaging a bore. It's stiff enough to dislodge a bullet if needed.

A USGI rod works just fine to clear obstructions  and easily fits in a range bag. I have no qualms about using a clean steel rod in a rifle.

For cleaning I believe that one piece coated steel or stainless rods (used always with a bore guide) are the best .

Certainly Brass is softer than steel but it needs to be clean. It and aluminum also tend to flex more than steel.

The Mosin Cleaning Rod I am talking about is the One the comes with the Rifle that fits under the barrel, I have the cleaning pouches there is a jig that fits on male end, there is also a Muzzle Protector, and a handle and Tool with a Screwdriver end on it, and an Oil/Bore cleaner Bottle in the second pouch. This is not a use every time tool, but one to use If You do not have anything else at Hand. Even though A lawn trimmer line went thru the barrel, A pull thru bore snake would not!, I needed something else and had a Mosin at hand. The Mosin Rod did the Job of removing a very small lead deposit from near the Chamber end of the Barrel of one of my 10/22's

Big +1 on the Rapid Rod.  We use them a lot here in Michigan.  Standard issue for most shoot bosses and instructors.  Awesome tool.
