Title: Come Ups for a Bolt Action .300 Win Mag
Post by: Ratchett on August 09, 2013, 12:44:50 AM
Hey guys does anyone have any idea what come ups would be for a Savage Model 110BA .300 Win Mag Bolt Action would be? Or even something that would be in the neighborhood... Shooting 180gr Remington Core Lock.

Thanks!

Cheesy ballistic calculator (http://ballisticscalculator.winchester.com/), using 180 gr. Accubond as a close enough load to what you're shooting, says 2, 2, 2, 3.

Or to be more precise, starting zeroed at 100 yards, a drop of 3 inches (1.5 MOA) at 200, drop of 11.3 inches at 300 (3.77 MOA, call it or a further 2 and a quarter MOA), drop of 25.5 inches at 400 (6.375 MOA total, or about 2 and a half MOA more), and 46.6 inches drop at 500 (9.32 MOA, or an additional 3 MOA).

There's many other ballistics calculators online, but I like this one -- it's simple and easy and "close enough" is the name of our game.

If you are also looking for a general wind formula for the 300 Mag, 6.5/284, and similar, give this a try:

Full Value - 10 mph - [(1 MOA per unit of 100 yards) -1] x .07 = correction in to the wind

Example: 500 yards - Full Value - 10 mph - [(1 MOA x 5) -1 = 4 MOA] x .07 = 2.80 MOA correction into the wind @ 500 yards

Remember that this is a general wind formula and your "mileage may vary". Give it a try!!!

The same ballistic calculator says a 10 MPH full-value crosswind works out to about 0.6 MOA per 100 yards (call it 0.7 MOA per 100 meters).  Pretty easy to remember.

FWIW, the trajectory is also almost exactly the same as for a .270 Win 130 gr out to 500 yards.  Try it and see.
