Yep, you got it figured out! My niece's husband was the same way, had "his" way, knew it all. I'd go so far and to describe his attitude toward her was a "jerk". While he was deployed she got into Appleseed, earned her patch, even did some mods to her's and the kid's 10-22's but not his. When he returned they go out to shoot, he's making all kinds of suggestions, blah, blah, blah, which she quietly ignores... They start looking at the targets! :) His whole attitude changed. This was a good thing for both of them, and yes, I separate couples right up front for a reason. Go have fun but don't tease him too much! :)....O.L.

That is about what they had to do to me. At one time I used to shoot standing unsupported Silhouette. I thought an Appleseed rifleman patch would be EASY. Well prone was getting the best of me. :sos: The shoot boss (reformed redneck) sent over a baby faced (looked about 11 or 12) 14 year old orange hat (Roland @)). He asked if I was having trouble. I said it was equipment issues. He then asked to borrow my rifle. I said sure. He then got himself down in prone and put a five (5) round group in the size of a dime or smaller :~. I had a very sudden respect for Appleseed and Roland. In my mind was going "ok I'm going to shut-up now and pay attention" ::). The rifleman patch took me 3 Appleseed events. And have been back at least 6-8 times since then.

For me part of the fun of instructing is trying to discover the way to make each shooter want to learn.
We recently had a young man who was very resistant to instruction. He hadn't done much shooting before and insisted that he was unable to get into the positions or use the sling. He asked if he could just shoot without using the positions. We said "fine, so long as you follow the safety rules and line commands". We worked with the other shooters while the kid just made noise and wasted ammo. After a number of walks down and back to check targets he said "I can't hit anything". I just smiled and explained that he was not able to hit the targets because he wasn't trying to learn what we were teaching. After that he followed along fairly well for the rest of the weekend. The key to him was that he hadn't done enough shooting to get past the initial thrill of making a rifle go boom. Once he had done that enough he became interested in making it hit a target and began to accept some instruction.
Sometimes an older shooter who is set in his ways can be one of the most challenging puzzles to solve. They already want to hit the target, but they don't want to receive the instruction because it involves admitting that someone knows something they don't .

And the only way they accept instruction is when they gain enough humility by being out shot by a kid or a woman. Then they may only accept instruction surreptitiously and slowly.

If you guys do the same thing next time I think Ill let savanna shoot saturday, and go boating with him on sunday. I was really happy you were one of the ones to win a scope, and even happier when I drew his card and saw your face. I tried to get him to tell me what his card was and I was going to do a fake draw for the 2.5-10 PST ;D I dont know why he wouldn't tell me what his card was.

sorry gotta nit pick. it was horizontal stringing and draggin wood. someone would have been along pretty shortly and suggest pulling my red hat if I said dragging wood for Vertical stringing ;D

It wasn't as entertaining as I had thought. The heat really took the playfulness out of the day. When Brown told him his vertical stringing was caused from dragging wood he rolled his eyes at me and said "I've heard that before". He did have a good time, and was a real trooper. His back was really bothering him before noon and he had to frequently roll over onto his back from the prone position and lay there for a minute. He never complained and never wanted to quit.
He gave up fishing time in the morning on Sunday to stick around to see me get my orange hat and was back in time to see me shoot Barbie's Garand offhand. In fact our host Alan, told him he better wait until I put the Garand down before he made his presence known, cause his card was drawn for a free scope and he wasn't there to claim it, so it went to the next guy. &)
In all fairness, it was right he didn't get it and I was fortunate to be drawn for the first scope being given away on Saturday. It wouldn't have felt right walking away with two scopes.
The benediction seem exceptionally done at this event and he was present to hear that too, which he was glad. This was the first time we have both gotten away from the farm for some us time in a long time. We both got to do something we liked and spend time with each other. What more could a couple ask for?
Very cool. Im going to throw business cards in your scope box. I need all the help I can get ;D

You know that could have backfired, cause he was there at the benediction when the PST was given away. What were the chances that we would have both been drawn for a scope. That's crazy. I just couldn't believe it. Who would have thought. My reaction was a knee jerk reaction cause I wasn't really paying attention when you called the card, then it hit me what you said.
Like I said before, I'm very happy with what I won, and two would have just been greedy, we would have given one of them back to be given to someone else.
Oh by the way, how do you like the avatar? Wore my new shirt when I hauled grain into the elevator this morning and got comments about it. Had to tell them about the seed and Vortex sponsoring it. Got a bunch of O0 from the guys there.

Sad to say, but it would be a very valuable lesson for her. Would make for an interesting class discussion the next time "freedom" and "liberty" is discussed in social studies, assuming that's still in the curriculum.
