Is there anyone who has had experience using the Mossberg MVP (http://www.mossberg.com/products/rifles/centerfire/mvp-series (http://www.mossberg.com/products/rifles/centerfire/mvp-series)) in Appleseed? And, based on that experience, have any recommendations plus or minus on selecting this firearm as one's centerfire rifle?
Many thanks in advance,
Tom
I have the 20" predator model it is really nice and comfy while slung up behind it for me. Mine shot lights out right out of the box, it has performed very well with everything from 52grn to 69 grn. I see no need for anything heavier or lighter actually. The bolt is a little clunky but has gotten better with use. I'm not real keen on the little part that drops down to pick up the next round from the magazine, it looks a little small and under engineered to me., but has not broken and I have picked up a spare just in case. Rifle has worked well with both GI surplus magazines and Pmags. The Pmags are a little snug so I usually run the 20 round GI magazines in it for the best results, and comfort. I would buy again, I love to shoot it and it has shot very well. I shot it in a KD event and it performed perfectly.
My son has the 24" varmiter model and I just don't like those funny looking stocks, it is not as comfortable to lay behind while slung up to me. It also has not shot quite as good as of yet but it is breaking in nicely and the groups are getting smaller. We both have the 3-9x40 P223 optic from Nikon they work well for our applications.
Hope this helps, you can find more info on them here. http://www.mossbergmvp.com/index.php?forum/ (http://www.mossbergmvp.com/index.php?forum/)
Thanks, Mudcat! The Predator version with the scope was the one I was looking towards, as my eyes have never been great, and are now even less good than they once were... So the fact that it's a bolt-action rather than a semi-auto does not detract from its suitability for AS events? Thank you very much again.
DeckApe (my brother) has the varmit model and I will echo most of Mudcats thoughts. We really like the stock on the varmit model and his didn't like pmags at all so I traded him some new 30 round mags I had.
He still has the factory scope on it and it is shooting well.
He scored Rifleman with it at a Winterseed last winter.
If I was getting one of the shorter ones I would get it with the threaded barrel to but a good flash hider on it.
I run four different Mossberg MVPs. My two absolute favorites are my 5.56 Patrol (unscoped) and my 7.62 patrol (scoped with Boyd's Pro Varmint stock). I consider them to be all around utility rifles and stupid accurate out to 500 yards although I regularly train with them out to 200 yards as that distance is the most practical.
My other two are 20" barreled, one 5.56 and one 7.62 with Varmint stocks and scoped.
I was initially concerned about the drop down duck lip on the 5.56 figuring that that would be the weak point. After significant abuse (clodhopper can attest to how I thrash my rifles) I have yet to hurt the darned thing. I am steadily impressed with the MVP platform.
I have run M1a Mags, USGI mags, Pmags, AR10 mags and all feed well. I have noticed that some of the early Pmags have a little more (not horrible by any means) slop in them.
I am considering purchasing a scout model and machining a stripper clip guide into the rear receiver bridge (plenty of meat there as it is virtually identical to the Remington model 40x/700 rear bridge).
I have found the action to be smooth and deliberate although initial movement was a tad gritty but definitely not objectionable.
