Title: 10-22 Trigger
Post by: Legend on June 14, 2013, 12:34:59 PM
Any suggestions for upgrading the stock Ruger 10-22 trigger assembly?

Volquartsen Target Hammer with Bushings Ruger 10/22

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/163143/volquartsen-target-hammer-with-bushings-ruger-10-22?cm_vc=U112 (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/163143/volquartsen-target-hammer-with-bushings-ruger-10-22?cm_vc=U112)

"By simply replacing the Ruger 10/22 factory hammer with this quality target unit, a smooth 2-1/2 to 2-3/4 lb trigger pull is attained. The hammer notch is precision surface ground, and does not require any fitting or stoning. Includes the target hammer with shims and bushings, hammer spring and trigger spring."

or you can replace the entire trigger group...

Timney Trigger Guard Assembly Ruger 10/22 2-3/4 lb Aluminum

Had good luck with both options...

There is a modification that can be done to the hammer, you can find a description on the Rimfire Central forums.  It requires a bit of stoning of the hammer, which has risks.

However, I am less than confident in my ability when it comes to the delicate firing mechanisms of rifles and prefer to use the Power Custom Hammer and Sear kit.  Periodically on sale from MidwayUSA as well.

If you find the trigger is lighter than you want, you can reuse the stock springs instead of the kit's springs.

+1 on the Volquartsen target hammer.  It's a pretty easy install, and you'll learn some things about how your trigger group might go haywire.   ;D  Midway sometimes puts them on sale in combination with the auto bolt release, which you really want anyway.

thanks for the info. I was looking at the Clark trigger group but I may just do the hammer exchange. Is the auto bolt release part of the Timney Group?

No, the auto bolt release not part of the Timney Group. However, you can find a ton of video's on YouTube on how to do it, and it really takes no skill, and not much more than a file. Do that mod yourself!

You can get the Volquartsen hammer with the bolt release mod for $5 more than the hammer alone...

Per the description on Midway for the Timney group...

"It also comes standard with an auto bolt release."

Thanks again guys. Good ideas and options. I am actually assembling a M1 carbine replica using the 10-22 as a basis. I know you can go crazy with mods for a 10-22 but if I can do some simple things myself to improve accuracy
I would prefer that.

One of our members" douglas34474 " does fine trigger work. Last time I checked he would true up the bolt and rework the trigger for about 75$. PM him.

I've done a few triggers using this method:

http://theprojectjunkie.com/guns-firearms-accessories/ruger-1022-trigger-job.html

The key is to take your time, and Go Slowly. Remember, once you've ground material off, there's no putting it back. If you goof and make your rifle so it's no longer "drop safe," buy a volquartsen hammer/sear. Good luck!

I have heard good things about the Hornet Triggers available on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hornet-Custom-Spitfire-2-75-All-Black-Trigger-Assembly-for-Ruger-10-22-/121112814628?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c32e2e424

They range from $109-199 depending on pull weight and options.

I really like my Kidd trigger. It's a little spendy, but is adjustable from 1 1/2 to 5 lbs with a simple adjustment and comes with the bolt release and mag release extension in three lengths. You can also get a single stage or double stage.

I love my Hornet Red Baron. Made a huge difference in my shooting. Has the bolt release and extended mag release built in. Also they will buy your old trigger assembly for $30.

Over at rimfirecentral there is a guy named Que who everyone swears is the best for tuning the factor trigger group, at a fair price.

I have two Rugers with the VQ target hammer/spring kit. While it lightens the pull weight impressively, it does not remove any creep or mushiness that may be in the factory kit. For that you need to customize both hammer and sear. There is a VQ set for that, or get Que to upgrade the factory trigger.
