Had a good daddy-daughter day at the range yesterday. Unfortunately, there is no range within reasonable driving distance where we can shoot prone, so we had to make do with the local outdoor range and their "no blue sky" rules/structures.
This was Gibson's first time shooting a 30-cal rifle, so I chose the SOCOM for the infinitely-adjustable LOP and height, as well as the muzzle brake that helps reduce recoil. Needless to say, she had much fun with it. Her groups were in the 6-8 MOA range shooting at 100 yards - more than acceptable for a first timer.
I shot video using my new phone (HD-quality), so I was able to get some good stills from individual frames showing the muzzle flashes. We will be doing some nighttime shooting in the not-too-distant future to experience the muzzle flash in all its glory.
We also got some trigger time on the pistols, and the Glock 17L was her favorite. We did quite a bit of ball-and-dummy work with it. That's an awesome drill for pistol shooting and it significantly shrank the size of her groups. She was down to 1-2 inches at ~10 yards shooting from the standing position. Daddy is very proud.

What kind of ammo made that much flash from the SOCOM?
I have seen surplus, factory, and reloads shot from a standard M1A and not seen that much flash.

16" compared to a 21". Muzzle comp compared to a FH. That'll do it.
My 16" Para FAL does the same.
And most important--Gibson rocks, and 'burbs is understandably proud! O0 :---
Waaaay cool! (or is that "kewl"?)
:~
Congratulations Gibson and your great Dad.
Does she mind the shells going past her nose?
My daughter shoots left handed as well. So far she hasn't shot a semi auto larger than .22lr.
