Title: Inexpensive dummy rounds for dry fire practice
Post by: skiddyfisk on April 25, 2013, 03:08:03 AM
As any rimfire shooter should know, dryfiring can be hazardous to the internals of your rifle. While some manufacturers build around this problem, such as Ruger, most do not. If you don't know for certain that your rifle is capable of being safely dry fired, using a dummy cartridge to protect the firing pin and breech face is strongly advised. However, dummy rounds can be expensive, or not locally available. For this reason, I thought I'd share a solution that was told to me a while ago and works very, very well.

#4 plastic drywall anchors are almost the exact size and shape of a 22lr cartridge, and will even feed and eject from most magazine-fed rifles. Hope this is helpful!

I have had these anchors slip inside the chamber on my Marlin 795.  Just be aware that it can happen, and make sure the bore is clear when you are done.  If there was one inside the chamber and it was fired would it stop the bullet or cause a problem?  I doubt it, but I won't take the chance.  I do not mention this to shooters for this reason.

Some instructor manufactures a true .22 snap cap that is very inexpensive.  It is listed on the forum somewhere.

Prescott is the one who makes the snap caps.  Get in touch with him.
