Thanks for that info, hadn't heard part of it before.  The backlash correction I've been doing for some years.  But the question I had on the windage adjustment test:  what I got from the post, was that there is sometimes a bump vertically as windage is adjusted.  Can a windage adjustment get "parked" on a bump, and thereby raise up the elevation of the aperature for that particular windage setting?  If so, there might be work to be done, or a third hand needed for the testing.

My sights are tightened to a point that it is considerably easier to adjust windage by using the support thumb to depress the Bellvue washer on the el side, while the firing hand adjusts the windage knob.  An old, now dead, E-7 Coast Guard armorer showed me that one.  He was also pretty good(?) with his boots as he lined out my prone position.  He and his memory is part of the reason why I continue to resist a kindler and gentler approach to training new shooters.
