Title: Second Amendment March, MI State Capitol, Mar 20
Post by: SteelThunder on January 23, 2013, 12:27:51 PM
MCRGO just posted on their Facebook page that a Second Amendment March has been scheduled in Lansing for March 20 from 10 am to 2 pm. They bill this as giving the opportunity to speak directly with our state legislators, who are scheduled to be in session that day.

You may want to review this opportunity and, if it fits your specific goals and beliefs, this may be a good opportunity to get off the couch and get involved.

Someone will have to ask, so it might as well be me.
Appleseed shirts & hats are acceptable attire or no?

I am in, vacation day already approved.

For those so inclined, there is also a demonstration planned on Feb 8 in every state capitol: https://www.facebook.com/events/406312512782872/

At this time, I am planning to attend both 2/8 and 3/20.  Carpool anyone?

I'm in on both as well at least tentatively. Carpool? Yes.

Mike,
My opinion is PLEASE wear your shirt.  Leave your hat at home.
The t shirt is advertising and support for Appleseed.
A hat shows you are an instructor and thus can carry an implication of endorsement.
My .02.

I would like to hear Fred  or someone at the advisory board give a more weighted response.

Since Appleseed doesn't take endorse or take a position I wouldn't wear one to a political event. Would it effect the non-profit status. I can't see how unless there is a specific vendetta against Appleseed.

Another reason I wouldn't is that however unlikely it could be any media shots taken can be distributed and printed.  Not that I would expect anything to happen but at any event like this something can happen and the right photo or camera angle might get some negative publicity. We saw how the media treated the Tea Party. I wouldn't want to put Project Appleseed as an organization at any risk of negative publicity.

For me, I would prefer to wear something that might send a stronger opinion than I would want publicly sent and associated with my Appleseed involvement.

I know we are spreading the message here but coordinating attendance to represent the RWVA and Appleseed is not in our best interest.

I wore an Appleseed shirt at the march on 1/19...  Under two other layers of clothing... (should have worn another layer actually)  I did hand out a few tri folds.  Got Don Volaric and the State Patrollman who was on foot duty that day (he's a shooter and has a CMP Garand :) )

If the two upcoming rallys are like the 1/19 one, there was an open mic.  Perfect opportunity for a bit of history and a call to action!  I wasn't prepared for this having never been to a rally of any type before...  Obviously, no RWVA references, but I'm thinking a bit of history and end with a bit of a benediction flavor.  Something to think about.

I don't see standing up for one's civil rights as a partisan political issue. As Caliper alluded to however, one is unlikely to wear a T-shirt in February or March.   I am working on getting someone from our group to be a speaker, I think our message and historical perspective would go over very well.

Where did this event come from?  Who is organizing it? What time?  Where?  Lansing Capitol?

See my first post above.  10AM in Lansing.  It is another group that is organing events at all state capitols nationwide through Facebook, similar to Jan 19.

I plan to do both the 8th and the 20th. Looks like I may need snowshoes for Friday!

Who's up for Fri the 8th?

Btw, the march on the 8th was getting up a head of
steam prior to the event on 3/20 fwiw. Why not do one every month? Squeaky wheel and all...

I was given approval by Skip Coryell to hand out trifolds etc.   ^:)^    I also asked if we could have a table and he said he would check. Second thought, it might be an anchor rather than an aid. We will be marching and going in and out of the Capitol.

That's great Pete...good job!  While the table seems interesting, I'd have to agree that it probably won't work given the format of a march.

In the spirit of kickin' around ideas -->  What about someone wearing "sandwich board" with a poster on it generating interest in Appleseed and we hand out tri-folds, schedules, etc.  Alternately, could we have a "mobile table" -- say a wagon or cart with posters, flags, etc.  I'm planning to bring one of those 8-12' extendable roller paint brush handles to carry 1-2 flags on.  If we could get a lot of those for people to carry with our flag-tour flag sets on them (or maybe the conduits from the DAT?) that would be an attention getter as well.

I'll be there!  From the response I'm seeing out there, I think there are going to be thousands of people there .  We should set up a place for MI AS-ers to meet -- or at least have a mobile phone tree set up to meet once we get there.

Kris

I would yield to the gentleman from the west side to wear the sandwich board.  Not me.
The idea of a synchronized flag tour would be AWESOME!  Dibs on the Gadsden.  We will have to keep the signs and flag poles outside.

At the 2A march in 2010 the state trooper at the desk said 'your pistol is ok in the Capitol but the umbrella will have to stay here'.

Haha, awesome!  I believe rifles are OK inside as well as long as they are slung.

Dang it...I was hoping you'd grab the sandwich board idea.  I'd love to do the rolling table idea but 1) I don't want to haul it, 2) I don't want to pull it, 3) I don't want to have to store it at the Capitol.

I might make up some "ask me about Project Appleseed" signs to place on the flag poles.  I'll take dibs on the Culpepper flag and the Texas Revolution Come and Take It flag.

How many Appleseeders car pool to events? I may be looking to carpool. I live near Stony Creek Metropark (26 Mile Road & Van Dyke (M-53)).

I will probably bring my high speed, (relatively) low drag, tactical 3-year old (code name JACOB) with me. He has an easy to move booster seat and he travels well. He likes long walks on the beach and Appleseed's Safety Rules. Hopefully he will attract some positive attention that we can use for the cause. I know he will have fun. I expect a lot of "Hey Dad, that gun looks just like yours!" O0

I hope to talk with the Emergency Preparedness Expo guy, my State Senator Jack Brandenburg and my State Rep Pete Lund while at the event.

I could take any of the following roads based on anyone else that wants to carpool.
I-696/I-96 across,
I-69
I-75/I-69
M-59

I would be willing to join (and help pay gas), or drive in a car pool.  I could meet people at the intersection of I96, and D19 in Howell.  I'm not familiar with Lansing so if I'm driving someone could possibly navigate... lol.

D.O.M., yes LGOC is A-ok!   :).  I'd go for M1A over Garand in this case, do you have a 30 round mag for it? >:D

On the subject of carpools, who is taking I69 west to Lansing?  Pete, want to split gas?

Is everyone planning to join the rally at the "official" start of Michigan x Pennsylvania?  What if we all meet on the NW corner of the intersection so the cadre can march to the Capitol as a group?

Tri-folds packed (and a bunch of other stuff)

How many flag poles are needed? Who is bringing the flags? I'll make poles in the morning.
Do you think 5 foot poles will be adequate?
(no use doing this stuff too early ;)
