Title: USGI sling: cotton or nylon?
Post by: rdhood on January 23, 2013, 11:33:34 AM
I borrowed a sling for my last Appleseed, and want to purchase a sling to get ready for my next.    I thought that I would purchase a couple of slings from the Appleseed store.  Do most folks here prefer cotton or nylon?

YES!

The important part is it can be used as a loop sling and you know how to PROPERLY put it on and use it.  Take it off and put it back on rather than taking off the swivel at the stud.

I like cotton better as I think it stays in place a little better.  Notice I said little.

I'm sure there are strong feelings held by some but I find it makes little difference.

I've tried cotton and nylon slings and prefer cotton.  Cotton slings can be stiff at first and can take a little bit longer to get into loop but it is grippy and doest slide on the support arm like nylon can.

OTOH, nylon proponents feel they get a little more stability and they are more weather proof.

I personally prefer the cotton slings... once broken in a bit so they aren't soo stiff they work like a charm.

Leather 1907, I had a USGI sling freeze solid on me twice. Once was cotton and once with nylon, both were hard as a rock.

Nylon is no good with a nylon jacket and the keepers will slide easier.

Cotton will stretch especially when wet, not good in foul weather.

I have several of each.  It doesn't make a difference to me.

1907 is nice but pricy.

1907 leather stretches in the rain

nylon slips

cotton has problems of its' own, but I prefer it  over the others

buy one of each?  A good Turner  1907 will cost the same as a nylon and a cotton combined, times 2

I think they are out of cotton, just buy the nylon, you'd be happy with either.

Biothane 1907 pattern.

I have a leather one, too, on my Mossberg target rifle, but I like the biothane one for the usual PNW hunting weather.

Chili with beans?  Nothing wrong with having beans with your chili.
Now putting beans IN your chili....that's just wrong.

And .308 just wishes it was .30-06

;D

As for slings....
I earned my patch using nylon.
I have cotton.

Nylotton - it's a hybrid sling material far superior to any other.

Very rare.  ^-^

Heh, we do tend to be a pleasantly disagreeing bunch.  Kinda like herding cats to get Appleseeders to stay on one page together outside of the history and the mission.

rdhood,

There is no cotton, there is no nylon, there is no leather.  There is only the Sling.  It binds us, steady's us, and makes us one with our Rifle.  May the Sling be with you, always.

Only because we shoot more than our neighbors, therefore our slings are more broken in.

Well, the cotton gets  the slight nod, but if they are out at the A store, I'll go for the nylon and not look back.
