Title: LTR Daisy 499
Post by: Lyndo on January 13, 2013, 01:19:47 PM
I didn't know where  to post this so I hope this is a good spot.  I don't have a dog in the hunt but thought I would point out a neat rifle we use in cub scouts.
It is a Daisy 499. It is a 5m  rifle, single shot (muzzle loader) it comes w/ adjustable peep sights and a sling. They say "The most accurate BB gun in the world!" Ideal teaching rifle for new shooters.  It looks like a red rider but is way not.

Here is a link: (if it is ok) http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Daisy_Avanti_Champion_499/617

PS: it comes w/ a non adjustable peep sight ALSO,   the adjustable rear peep sight comes w/ different sized  front sights too.   You can shoot it inside or in town.  You can make a BB catcher out of a cardboard box.  It does not replace the red rider it is different beast.  I use the red rider to bring the folks over to our side, how can you not smile when you see that hole you just made or that can jump. I have brought many a Moms over at Cub Scout camp, sometime you have to remind them this is for the kids, come back after camp and you can shoot all you want.

Anybody got any recommendations on a break action single shot pellet rifle for back yard fundamental practice?  Something that could support a scope?

Check out the Gamo 177 cal.  They are accurate , pack a wallop, and come with scopes.  Use mine on practice range set up in pole barn and pest control.  O0

Be advised the CMP is selling used/reconditioned Daisy 853, single-pump, .177 cal pellet rifles, for ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS.  These air rifles list for over $300 and come with target peep sights and a sling.  Can't do multiple shots, but can practice everything else Appleseed @ 10 meters, perhaps even in the comfort of your cellar or heated (or not) garage...  Absolute, screaming deal.  My school used the Daisys for gym classes from 6th through 12th grade - and if the gym classes couldn't destroy them, no one can...
Daisy has video of maintenance/how to change seals in rifle, and .177 pellets are extremely inexpensive...
'Course, if someone offers you a Feinwerkbau, Olympic-model (200, 300, 600), single-side pump air rifle (no recoil whatsoever) grap that, too...

The CMP refurbished 885 are great!

As far as a break barrel I want one of the Nitro piston guns.  Pyrmid Air has reviews on tons of things and are nice people.

B.B. Pelletier (sp) /Tom Gaylord has a blog with lots of reviews as well.

I use a CMP reconditioned Daisy 853 for working with students and some practice. It is the best deal available. My personal practice for High Power is with a Crossman MAR177. In all honesty I regret not buying the 853 sooner. Here is the link to the CMP order page.

Look toward the bottom of the page for the reconditioned 853's. These are great rifles to use when teaching marksmanship.

Note NMAR matches may be shot with this rifle. The cmp time for sitting is 5 minutes for the single pump guns. One really good thing about any air rifle is that it impresses upon you the importance of NPOA and follow-through.
