Title: Palm Bay, FL - Dec 15-16, 2012
Post by: Mr Pete on December 17, 2012, 04:36:33 AM
Florida has patriots, that is for certain!

Port Malabar's Rifle and Pistol Club gathered together 40+ Americans to reconnect with the birth of our nation.  Of note were our 11 youth shooters and our eldest (Ms Gail at 92).  Our shooters at both ends of the spectrum worked, had enthusiasm and perservered...examples of what you can accomplish at any age.  Ms Gail was able to throw down a 235 which left our instructors speechless.

With such fine examples, there was magic in the air as 5 were able to reach out for that brass ring and grasp it.  That makes a total of 6 fair and square Riflemen out of this group.

ALL the shooters can be very proud of the character displayed.

More to come later but please post your experiences and pictures.

I for one had a great time and wish to thank the tireless instructors for all that they do. On this occasion my wife and I took a break from instructing and just came as students--to learn, to practice our skills, and to relive our Heritage. When I am with Appleseeders I feel that I am with family and community and that there is no place I would rather be. I look forward to returning to this range and working with the great crew there.

92 y.o. with a 235??!!  Was that Gail Whittemore, perchance?

People will surprise you.  Gail started off a little slowly, but built continually all weekend.  The score wasn't a fluke.  She got better with every target. And she loved listening to the history. Check out picture 26 in Tomblin's post.

I taught a rifle course to a guy in a wheelchair at the beginning of the year. Long story, but he was a quadriplegic.  Had to strap a kind of metal plate to his hand just so that he could pull the trigger.  Had to hook the rifle to his chair. Shooting was exhausting for him, but he loved it. And he was a competent high-power competitor.

All it takes is will. A LOT of it.

And having that makes you formidable -- even if you're 92 or in a wheelchair.

Appleseed was a real experience. Didn't make my patch and I have lots of "excuses". Next time, I'm wearing contacts, tightening up BOTH front and back sights, and bringing some cardboard or something to keep all the hot shells from hitting me in the face, nose, eye, and going down my shirt! I had to watch "The Patriot" again last night. Meant a whole lot more after the shoot. Will plan on trying again in a month or so when my back and neck get's back in shape! :---

Glad to be here with my family for our second Appleseed.  My mother-in-law Gail Salmon showed us all up with a rifleman score.  We will just keep on trying for it.  Go Gail!!! ^:)^ :)
