Title: Wal-Mart Ammo Purchase.
Post by: Pitmaster on September 28, 2012, 02:59:34 PM
The comment in another thread about Wal-Mart having 1600 rounds of .22 CCI Mini Mags on sale caused this to happen this morning.

This morning a local TV station posted a mention about Michigan City, IN having a gun buy back today. Coincidentally, I had to visit a client about 5 miles away from the police station so I

I turned these:

3 non-working, non fixable pistols in .22 short (Butler single shot derringer), .25 caliber (Iver Johnson break open), and .22 (Mondial)

Into this:

Which became these

The ammo was $98 per canister, I ended up spending $60 for the 2 canisters ;D

Of the 6 people turning in firearms 5 of us were gun owners turning in crap non working guns and going to buy ammo. One elderly lady was turning in a couple of useless pistol for the money.

Police officers were dropping by to check out the guns and even fondle a couple that looked rather nice. The sporting goods manager at Wal-Mart thought it was pretty cool I was buying ammo with the cards. I ran into a guy who had been in front of me at the police station and his clerk thought it was funny he was buying ammo with them too. He had bought 200 rounds of 12 gauge. Plus, I mentioned Appleseed, gave him a tri-fold, and got a board contact for the Michigan City Pistol and Rifle Club.

Good deal!  I left my local walmart last week with one of those. And some 12 gauge. And some .380. I think I may have a problem.  %)

Not that it really matters much, but many of these "buy-backs" (misnamed, because the buyer never owned the guns before) are not funded with tax dollars, but with donations from mushy-headed feel-gooders.

I don't know if that makes it any better or not.

Invariably, the turned-in guns are junkers worth much less than the offered price, and with a scattering of oldies turned in by widows who have recently discovered them in attics or closets, and probably a very few crime guns attracted by the usual "no questions asked" policy.  And, sadly, an occasional genuinely valuable antique.

Did the Buy-back offer say what was to become of the guns?  Usually, they get melted for scrap or dumped into the ocean.

There are a few junkers around the house just waiting for a buy back near me.
Darn it! guess I have to move to Michigan, California, or Illinois.

Al right Mark you got me going on that comment.

He did the buy back in INDIANA. Not Michigan.

Please refrain from lumping us in with those other less than progun states.  Michigan is one of the most gun friendly states in the USA.

Good score! We had a Church and a car dealer try to do something similar a few years ago, turn in a gun, no questions asked, and get a chance on a new car for each gun turned in. All us gun owners in the area let them know in no uncertain terms if we had any guns stolen during their little scheme, we'd hold them personally responsible. They canceled when their phones wouldn't stop ringing from ticked off armed people!....O.L.

This event was funded by several local businesses. The only government entity on the flyer was the prosecutor's office. I doubt if they provided any funds. From what I've observed over the years these are always locally driven. As I mentioned of the 6 people there 5 of use were turning in non-working and non-fixable firearms and turning them in to buy ammo or something. I particularly liked the guy who brought in a revolver where the cylinder was detached and zip tied to the frame. I'm not sure if the 2 "parts" belonged to each other. They may have been from 2 different guns. I do plan to write a letter to several of the sponsors, newspapers, etc. about my experience. I did send a link to this same thread on INGO to the local TV station who posted about it. I was hoping they would contact me for an interview. The best thing was a contact with the Michigan City Rifle Club to see about hosting an Appleseed.

Indiana has some of the best gun laws in the country. Especially the Lifetime License to Carry a Handgun. Gun Shows are fairly plentiful.

Off to shoot my new Brown Bess in a few minutes.

Okay Superheat, I do not want to offend like minded freinds in Michagan.
Definatly my error in assuming Michigan City might be in Michigan.
Maybe I could live in Michigan, instead of my local jurisdiction, where the heavy hand of government insists concealed carry permits are only good in incorprated areas, because everyone in the rural areas are just assumed to be carrying.

About twenty years ago, none other that Reba, yes, that Reba, she's an Okie...
offered free tickets to her concert in Tulsa for a gun turned in. A local pawn shop/gun dealer countered her offer by giving a 10% discount on gun purchases for Reba albums turned in....

I hate it that she's from Oklahoma.....
