Title: Wilmington, Ohio - Sept. 29/30, 2012
Post by: slim on September 13, 2012, 06:08:22 PM
Hello Appleseeders!

It's looking like we're going to have a big ol' event at the end of September. Our venue in Wilmington, Ohio - The Clinton County Farmers and Sportsman's Association - is sold out and packed to capacity!  ^:)^

We have the opportunity to get a hot lunch (and dinner) if we can come up with a list of folks who'd like to participate. There's also camping available on site. If you'd like to have a hot meal and/or camp, please sound off here.

Also, if you have any questions or comments or anything at all, please share. See you soon!

Sllim, as we discussed yesterday, count me in to help at Wilmington. Plan on me camping and if the range wants to do lunch and dinner, I will take advantage of it.  Less food to pack.

Question 1, Do they have a shelter area like New Philly that will allow us to display the Battle Road maps?  If not, should I bring them, without something substantial to attach them to or hang them from they won't work.

Question 2, Do you want to combine forces for breakfast on Sat and Sun? I have Coleman camp stove and can rustle up breakfast for both of us.  Any other campers are welcome to coordinate as well.

Question 3. I assume you want me to bring safety kit, radios, water jug and usual repair, support and loaner stuff.

Question 4. If I could get there early on Friday, any chance the club would let me shoot some on my own Friday afternoon?

Had great time this past weekend and am looking forward to helping at Willmington.

Slim, more planning re: Wilmington

Looking at pictures from prior AS's at Wilmington, looks like we may need some pop up canopies behind the line for shade and to organize shoot equipment, etc.  I have one and can secure a second one by the time of the shoot if we will need them.  Also have tarp large enough to enclose one of them on three sides if needed do to bad weather.  Also, looking at pictures of the Wilimington club house (which is very nice by the way), I figure I will need to make some stands that will allow us to display the Battleroad maps independently.  I will figure something out and bring what we need.

I really do wish I could make this event! I have a social event that I must make an appearance at on Saturday night here at home. Oh how I wish that had been scheduled on Sunday instead since I will probably only be there for 2 hours or so. Zanesville is penciled in on my schedule since it's just barely within day-tripping distance. (2 hours)

Corvette, having been to Wilmington a handful of times, I can answer a few of your questions until slim has a chance to get to them.

There is not shelter area at Wilmington; we shoot in the middle of the 200yd range and eat in the club house (with no real places to hang banners inside).  No shelter houses around.  Depending on weather (i.e. not to hot and no rain)/slim's plan, you might do some Strikes right there on the line.

Canopies are a great thing to have at this location.  If you have some, bring them.

As far as shooting on Friday, send a PM to dirtdawg (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=11052) and ask him; he's a member of the CCFSA and might be able to set you up.

Goldfish thanks for the feedback.

I will bring my canopy, make stands to display banners in club house (assuming history done there), bring portable tables for line use, and tarp to wrap if necessary.

I'm late to my own party.  :shootself:

A couple of answers (and then more questions!)...

We will be out there on the 200 yard line. It is open. No trees. No shelter. No rest room. Bring any and all canopy/shelter/shade type set ups you have. If you don't use it I bet some shooters will. There is a very nice club house we use to eat and check in. However, that club house is about 300 yards from the firing line. We will attempt to minimize our trips to/from the main club house since it's a logistical nightmare. We'll check in there, eat lunch there, and that'll probably be it. The bulk of our time will be spent on the firing line. I plan on doing all marksmanship instruction and heritage on the line. Bring your chair!

If there's inclement weather we can use the rifle/pistol building. It's a very nice pole barn but it too is a haul from the firing line. We'll see what the weather is like but I'd really like to minimize trips back and forth since that's what eats up the time.

As for hanging a banner, I'd suggest bringing something that will stick up out of the ground or a way to secure it to your pop ups. (Recruiting a few more IITs would do the trick. They could stand there and hold it while you tell the stories!)

Food - I'm currently working with club liaisons to get some grub coordinated. They've offered three meals in the past. I think we should take them up on it this time!

Showing up early and shooting is probably a no-go unless you can find a club member to shoot with. I will probably have to work late on Friday and won't show up until Saturday morning. If I can get out early enough, I'll camp on Friday night.

Is anyone else planning on coming to this event? What are your plans?

Will bring my canopy, will have method to hang banners on back side, will setup so we can flip between second and third strike. If I can get a second canopy, we can set them side by side. Will have portable tales for other shoot stuff. Will be great shoot, i am looking forward to it. I will contact club directly on shooting on friday. No problem.

Slim do they allow camping at Wilmington? Will we be able to bunk in the club house like New Philly? If either are available, I will plan to camp there.  If any body else is camping, let's coordinate breakfast etc.  I have camp stove and supporting stuff, no reason to duplicate.

  Apologies for the formatting  ???

Primitive camping is available onsite (by the archery field targets).  Electricity and firewood are available (donations are appreciated).
Please keep in mind that Ohio's archery season for deer opens on Saturday, so there might be a bit of early morning traffic centered around there.  We will arrange for clubhouse access if the weather turns really bad and for restroom access.

I will bring a 10' x 20' canopy, but I will need some help and a little time to set it up.  The club has a few 10 x 10 canopies available also.  I will also bring a 10 gallon water cooler and ice/cups.  We can bring some tables from the Rifle/Pistol building.  We can have limited use of the UTV and trailer for setting up and tearing down.  I can bring some radios and I think some are available at the club.

We can leave our infrastructure set up overnight on the range, but it would be in the way if we stretch it out for some KD :~

As it has been mentioned, we will pretty much be in an open field.  It is a couple hundred yards to the port-o-potty and a few hundred yards to the clubhouse.  Trips back and forth will be slow and take some time away from shooting.  It will also be a haul for getting gear back and forth.  The UTV will help, but if it is muddy we will need to consider rutting !@#)

Finally, this line will be pretty crowded.  We will also need to arrange for additional target backing for about 3-4 shooters.  If anyone wants to coordinate off-line, please send me a PM and we'll take it to e-mail or mobile phone.

That is all.  Carry on.

Dirtdog, great info.  Lets plan on hanging my battle road maps side by side across the back of your 10 x 20 canopy, I will have necessary materials. Will take breakfast both mornings.  Looking forward to weekend.  Corvette
