Title: Is using a mag coupler at appleseed OK?
Post by: RimfireRifleman on September 06, 2012, 11:42:58 AM
Hi,
I just attended my first appleseed last weekend and I had the time of my life, :~ the only frustration was my ruger 10/22 mags, one would not fall free and the other kept stove piping my rifle, !@#) so I came home and fixed my stove piping mag by buffing the feed lips, then I put in a better mag release to minimize hair ripping! LOL. Now my question is can I use a mag coupler at my next appleseed [ FYI consists of gluing two mag together #) ] anyway just wanted to ask and to thank all of the people that make appleseed possible O0

Thanks for your reply, yes it is still a mag change and a 10/22 mag change at that!! also the extra weight helps my mags drop fre. Thanks again

I'm not sure that they really speed things up, but I've got no problems with back-to-back or 3-in-a-circle 10/22 mag rigs on my line.  Or for that matter side-by-side or back-to-back AR or AK mag setups.

Be cautious about using the extended mags as an impromptu palm rest, or putting side pressure by indexing your support arm to them.  That will cause some  10/22s to start malfing, presumably due to play in the magazine seating.

IME, it's faster to simply dump one mag and grab another than to remove a mag, correctly manipulate it, and re-insert. I know it seems like a great idea, it just has to be better. But once you see someone drop their mag and it falls out of reach, taking the next loaded mag with it, you will understand. Or they put it in backwards, or they forget which side is 2 and which side is 8, or they drop it into the mud, or...

There is no secret weapon, no special additive, no must have accessory that will make getting a Rifleman score easier or faster. If you have tech sights and at least a front sling stud, you have everything you need for the rifle. The rest is in your noggin.

I know 1 instructor who swears by the tri-mags. I know a dozen who swear at them.

You can use them or any variation you like. I would suggest that you look to your stock. In a normal 10/22 the mag WILL fall free when you press the lever. If you have an older 10/22, invest the $5 in an extended release. If the mags do not fall free, look to where they are binding. Most often it is the side of the stock in the mag well. The fix is to take a flat file and thin down the mag well. Go slow and stop when the mags fall free. Some will say to file the mags but that gets to be a problem when you leave them at home and need to borrow someone else's.

I agree, it's more difficult for most folks keeping track of which mag is which connected than it is if seperate. Some can, but they have worked out a system and practice a lot with them.

I do both, sand the corners and flashing on the mags and smooth up the mag wells....O.L.

Wow, thanks guy for all the info! my mag coupler is a 90 degree two mags, is this just going to be a pain?

Way faster and more practical for real world applications just to do a mag change. Unless you're running like a jungle clip on an AR or similar.

The biggest (and really only) benefit of the tri-mag is that it gives you something to rest your palm on in standing.

EDIT with soemthing to fix your problem, instead of just presenting another one:

I file down all my mags as well as the inside of my stock, especially around the part on the mag where the pieces meet.

I've also been looking at making some kind of Magpul for 10/22 mags, once I figure out how one would attach it.

to me any thing other than the stock 10 rd ruger rotary magazine detracts from the best feature of the 10/22 - the fact that the magazine fits flush

there is also some strategy for helping a 10/22 magazine drop free - slap the mag release - if you gently push and release, it is more likely to hang up - I often tell shooters squeeze the trigger, slap the mag release

Try it at an event and see how it works for you.

If it does, great!

If not, do something different.

I use a dual mag clip holder like this: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=25155/Product/RUGER-reg-10-22-reg-QUAD-CLIP-DUAL-CLIP-HOLDER (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=25155/Product/RUGER-reg-10-22-reg-QUAD-CLIP-DUAL-CLIP-HOLDER) I glue the two mags into the holder with RTV sealant so that, at least in theory, you could take them apart again. (Never had to do so.) You might have to very slightly sand the holder to make everything fit. For the transition stages load one mag with 2, the other with 8 and write "2" and "8" on the metal part of the feed lips to tell them apart. Or use one clear mag and one black. The tri-mag clamps also work, just a bit larger and more bulky.

That duel mag configuration might not fall free due to the wieght distribution being largely to the right side.Howeveer, I have seen 9mm4545 and his tri-mag a little bulky but falls straight down!
"RUN WHAT YOU BRUNG" Long story short yes it's o.k. to use but, it may or may not help!

Well I'll tell you a story about what I learned in a land far away many years ago (See forum name for hint).
You can use them if you want (IMO) but the first time the lower two hit the sand, dirt or grass depending on the range you'll "clog' that mag with either of these items. Now when you go and mag change most likely you wont notice this. Guess what? Now you have a problem. Sand, dirt, grass is now in your chamber and most likely will cause a jam. Now you'll say ...but I'm on my mat. They get dirty also throughout the day. If you're standing or sitting well what happens if you accidentally drop all three? Now you may have 3 mags that will have to be cleaned before you can load.
Back in the day it was common for us to tape two mags together facing in opposite directions. Quick change instead of reaching for another. The first thing you learn is hit the dirt when you start taking fire. Guess what happens to that mag facing the dirt when you do this? It fills with dirt!
Not to mention you're putting pressure on the one in the mag well. Doesn't help the feeding process.

My suggestion stay with one mag.
Just my .02 though.

From my experience, you can spot people who shoot 10/22s by their massively deformed right thumbs.  I've wasted 20-30 seconds having to use both hands to rip the magazine out of the rifle on more than one occasion. I'm going to pick up a couple of the dual mag holders to give them a try (thanks for the hint about using RTV).

Another thought is to add some little wire handles, like on a paint can, to the bottoms of the magazines.  That's more of a hassle than the dual mag holders, so I'm going to take the easy way first.

One of the plans for this weekend is to polish the mag wells and maybe the magazines to see if they will drop free.  With multiple rifles and a surprising number of magazines, that's going to take a while.

Marking the magazines 2 & 8 is a really good idea.  After my first Appleseed I went out and bought both regular and fine point Sharpies for my "box of shooting stuff".  While they are supposed to be permanent, I wind up having to refresh the numbers at least once/Appleseed.

Lots of good tips here on the forums, but also a lot of debate over what's a good idea.  I just keep trying things and keep the ones that work for me.

"I just keep trying things and keep the ones that work for me."

That's the big thing, find what works. My wife and I only have 4 10-22's and probably a dozen mags, they all fall free by gravity and didn't take hardly any effort....O.L.

All my mags fall free, even with the rifle pointing straight up.

I open up the mag well. I sand the sides and corners of the mags. I slightly round the socket head hex screw on the front of the mag. I shorten the small stud on the back of the mag to get an overall length of 41mm (IIRC). All of these small efforts make a big difference in the ease of operation.

Also, remove any paint from the hole that the front of the mag is secured in.

The Butler Creek "Steel Lips" 10 shot Mag's are handy with just enough poking out of the mag well to get your hands on. As for pulse's you don't develop 10/22 thumb from trying to make sure your make is properly seated , they are clear so you can count the rounds and have notches in the housing to lock together . The thing to watch out for on the Butler Creek mag is to check the alignment of the two halves at the mag well. Even if you get one that's not lined up a minute with a flat Dremal router bit will bring them up to drop free spec.   about 12$ at Bud's

Something I've seen is a small plastic dohicky/box that glues to a standard 10/22 mag and makes it look like a carbine mag. That would make the mag changes more positive also. Unfortunately cant research for the seller right now, I think it might have been Arthur Brown.

Just another idea for you to try

I was having a heck of a time with my mags, even after sanding them and the mag well down. I was looking for an alternative solution, as the dual mag holder just did not work for me (it's to long and my arm hits it in prone and seated, throwing the mag off center which caused loading issues). I found my relief in tire weights. They are just heavy enough to let the magazine slide out, and they stop it from bouncing when it hits the ground. Another plus, they come on adhesive tape, which is easily removed if you decide you don't need them anymore, or want to try another solution without making a huge mess.
