Title: M1A Magazines
Post by: K98Al on August 20, 2012, 10:23:28 AM
Anyone had a problem with M1A mags not feeding correctly? I've got a couple (not el cheapos) that when full, or mostly full, fail to feed rounds. Problem appears to subside when mag gets less full....
Springs getting weak? Is there a rebuild kit worth buying? Is this common?

Thanks for your help!

I cannot say for sure what your issue with the mag's are.

However, I know for myself, that the "10" round California mag's suck to High Holly Heaven!
In addition, it is not just about "restricted" magazines
The "10" rounder's don't feed correctly in my experience, and exhibit the characteristics you describe.
On the other Hand, the correct original 20 round GI issue work great....go figure

Best of luck working out the problem

The only mags I will use are made by Checkmate. They are also the vendor which SA uses for their mags. They bear the initials CMI on the rear spine of the mag and usually Checkmate on the floor plate. About $27.00 as I recall for either 10 or 20 rounders.
44Mag.com sells them as well as rebuild kits which you might give a try.
YMMV

Good luck!

Weak bolt return spring?   Not having enough force to strip the upper rounds, under the higher magazine tension?    Could also be an issue of slightly binding bolt, though I would really be surprised.

^This was my first thought.

In my experience weak mag springs do the opposite of your issue.  Feeding the first few rounds fine.

Does it do it with different kinds of ammo? I've got a PSL that won't feed copper washed surplus worth a hoot, but it'll feed brass or lacquered steel just fine. I had to polish the insides of the feed lips to even get that. Of course my mags look like they were salvaged from a quarry, so it's a wonder they work at all.

I've done a bunch of research since my post, and found that I have 3 cheap copies of GI magazines. The other one that is much higher quality is acually a commie made Chinese copy of a GI mag. And it works!
Everything I read points to CMI mags as being the only good current manufacturer of M1A/M14 magazines.
