Am I missing anyone?

OK folks, as we get closer there will be more details listed. What you need to know now.

- There are only thirty spots available at this time. If those fill and we can get the staff needed we will open the line up. We can go to eighty.
- Atterbury is hot in the summer and there is no shade.
- Everyone will be relaying through the pits.
- If you are a light sleeper, the sound of 155s and 50 BMG may keep you awake all night.
- We will have two squads. Squad A will shoot Saturday morning and work the pits Saturday afternoon, then work the pits Sunday morning and shoot Sunday afternoon. Squad B, of course will do the opposite. Everyone gets to shoot in the AM and the PM both.
- We will end the weekend getting come ups from 100 to 500 yards.
- You will be expected to have enough of the same ammo to shoot all weekend.
- You will be expected to have a solid 25 yard zero, and demonstrate same Saturday morning.
- You will be expected to have a known functioning rifle.

This is an instructor weekend, as in "Riflemen". If you show up with three kinds of ammo or a scope in the box, you will go to the pits to work. If we have time and daylight remaining Saturday afternoon, you will be allowed to get sighters, if you can convince someone to work the pits for you. If you bring a $3000 primary rifle and a $500 spare rifle, I am going to suggest that the $3000 rifle is unreliable and push strongly for you to use the $500 rifle. Bring a rifle that works, everytime. I understand that things go wrong and that things break, but we will not hold the line while you read instructions. Some instructors will be driving a long way to attend and they do not want to sit in the grass while you search for blue locktite.

Get to the range, get you and your rifle sorted out beforehand. We might do something fun, who wants to miss out on fun for want of a lost setscrew.

Ok, I might double border raid you. Be prepared to be invaded by Pennsylvania. :) At least I should have my zero worked out from the Gibsonburg, Ohio KD the week before. I haven't shot anywhere with pits so it sounds like a great experience.

Yep...there are some nice patches of grass right there on the range.   ^:)^  I can loan you a tent if you need one, but I'll warn you that my loaner tents aren't exactly water tight...but we all know that Indiana doesn't get rain much anymore.

And just like I offered at the last Atterbury shoot - anyone is welcome to use my shower.  It's AMAZING.  Seriously.  Bring a gallon jug or your own solar shower, and you're all set.

I'm definitely in!!!

Camping is not a problem, we take full possession of the range so we generally camp at the 100 yard line on the east end of the berm.

Mat can be brought, personally I don't use mine at Atterbury. It's one thing more to drag between the ranges and the ground is soft anyway. The mat keeps you from getting a solid divot for your support elbow, IMO.

I recommend you go to the line with these things to get the most from the weekend.

1) A sorted out rifle. Not something with a new scope or untried trigger. You want a rifle that has proven itself to run 200 rounds without jamming or failure.

2) 250 rounds of the same ammo, brand and lot, you used for item one. Keep the rest of the ammo in the truck.

3) A backpack.

4) Water, pencil, notebook, more water, two magazines, light rain gear only if weather calls for it, a few snacks, sunscreen, sun glasses you have shot with before, hat.

5) An attitude that you have been wet before, tired before, dirty before, sore before, hot before, and survived every time. Smile, not many people get to shoot on a military known distance range just for the fun of it.

6) A small digital camera, 'cause you are going to want to remember this weekend.

As SPQR likes to say, everything you absolutely need, and nothing you will not use.

Preparation for Atterbury.

1 - Start time - Checkin is at 7:30AM EDT. For those in most of Indiana, this is 7:30. For those in the Central time zone, it's 6:30 CDT. Safety briefing is at 8:00 sharp. We will not wait to get started. The day will be long and we can't afford to lose time here.

2 - Camp Atterbury firearms policy - No firearms. An exception is made for civilians for the firearms to be used on the range for an event.

3 - Centerfire Rifle, Zeroed - Please make an effort to get a known zero prior to attending. 25m or 200yds required.

4 - 250 rounds of ammunition - Make sure it is all the same as what was used to zero. For those with AR's, heavier is better. 62gr vs. 55gr, 75gr vs 62gr, etc...

5 - The elements - The range being used is not sheltered in any way. If it's sunny, you will be out in the sun. If raining, you'll be out in the rain. Bring what's appropriate for you and bring cover for your rifle if rain is expected. Layered clothing is best so that you can adjust to the changing temps. Events are not canceled due to the weather(exception with extreme weather only. i.e. - tornado, severe storm/lightning). Do not bring portable shelter as the firing line will be moving frequently.

6 - Additional items:

> Shooting mat.
> Sling.
> High powered binoculars or spotting scope. Will be used during sight in for each distance. We understand that not everyone has these. Some should be available to share.
> At least 2 magazines. Round count on each string will be 10 not including sighters but transition stages require a mag swap. Internal mag bolt guns will have to reload within time constraints.
> A way to take notes.
> **Eyes and Ears** Eye and Ear protection is NOT an option.

7 - Sign Up - YOU MUST HAVE SENT YOUR INFORMATION(name, address as appears on your ID, rifles and their serial numbers.) TO Yellowhousejake and Bill 3 PRIOR TO July 29th. To be safe also email your information to in@appleseedinfo.org

8 - Hydration - make sure to bring enough water/gatorade/etc.. to stay hydrated. It might be cool out being early in the year but the wind can take it out of you faster than the heat.

9 - Food - There will be a designated time for lunch. Please bring what food you need ready to eat. Leaving base for lunch is not the best option and we continue without anyone who is late returning from lunch. If everyone brings food that can be eaten on the fly, all the better.

10 - From the gate to the range control - Essentially, you continue through the cantonment area on the road you came in on. You will come to a stop sign across from the fire department. Range control is on your left, Look for a white Ford Ranger. A $10.00 per day range fee is required from each shooter attending.

If you have any questions, please contact me at in@appleseedinfo.org or call my cell at 1-317-989-0578. Keep this number handy in case you have any questions in route once on the base.

Thank you - Yellowhousejake

One more time, you will NOT be allowed to participate without the following info turned in to Range control.

Name
Address as appears on your ID
Rifle model and caliber
Rifle serial number

Spent the morning at the range with newest lot of ammo and trusty AR.

Confirmed my 100 yard come up and started my tank top tan.

Will return next week to confirm my BUS adjustments, and will leave ammo bearer behind as the excursion was prematurely ended due to some kind of boyscout camp induced malady which caused us to retire early.

The plains of Attebury await!  Who else is prepping for our safari?

was out shooting the AR this weekend and the rear sight fell off! the part of the mount that the screw goes into was lost! so i had to order a new set of rear sights  (great excuse for upgrade, now my rear sights will have elevation adjustments!) will be sighting it in once the rear sights arrive so i will be ready. have come ups on the m1 down from 25-50-100 yards. also awating 600 rounds for the m1, still need to learn the trick of putting only two rounds in at a time.

Hey I need some help Im trying to zero my ar for 25 yards and get my come ups to a 100 its an a3 with standard a3 detachable carry handle and standard front sight post with bayonet lug 20" barrel I can get zeroed at 25 but at 100 im about 6 inches high so the problem is the rear sight is all the way down pretty much and the front post is sticking up above the wings I dont have any adjustment left to speak of to lower the poi at 100 yards just had model 1 sales (er shaw) chromoly barrel installed it has the front sight that came on it I have had 3 different front sight posts in it and 2 different rears on it same thing with all the configurations shooting 55 grain ball it shoots tight groups just cant get them down   bout ready to use the rifle for a hi lift jack handle        :wb:

give the rear drum one complete rotation, setting it back on 6/3, and then re-zero at 25 adjusting the front post.  This will give you drum adjustments out beyond the range of the round for elevation and still let you dial it down 6MOA to the 100 yard zero.  the other method is to only use the 25M setting.  hold low for 100, not quite as low for 200, you will be back on for 300 and then hold high for 400.

im at the lower 6/3 setting zeroed at 25 with the front post already sticken up to high if I give the rear drum one complete rev up to 6/3 again then I will have to raise the front post even more to zero it back at 25 or am i confused  The front post is almost loose its so far out already at 25 yards

Once upon a time I bought a complete upper with a flat top and quad rail. It had some super sweet NC Star BUIS on there. I took it out to zero and couldn't see where I was hitting.

I couldn't see because I was hitting the dirt about six yards off to the left of my target... half way there! I was quick to blame the quality control experts at NC Star but after an exhaustive IMC experience I determined the quad rail had been incorrectly installed and wasn't properly aligned with the flat top.

I started getting into minor smithing and then decided I'd just use a single focal plane sight mounted to the flat top instead. No need to align a front and rear now. Just put the dot on the target and blam!

If you really wanna run irons, make sure your carry handle is mounted correctly and it's aligned with the front sight. Sometimes the handles are too far forward or back, not in the groove right, etc. There are different sizes of handles and front sight bases. Could they be slightly off?

As for zero... if you're six inches high at 100, you're about right. For shooting KDAQTs that's going to be just right since the V is "about" six inches up from the bottom of the target. Once you have your front sight set on an AR, you never really touch it again. Set it and forget it!

I am thinking we may just want to get the locals together at Chilidog's and have a shakedown to make sure everyone has a 25 and 100 meter zero before we go.  then we can write them down.  that would be a good time to gom around with a finicky sight and get it squared away.

If you have a standard front sight a frame that isn't stamped with an F, your front sight post will be too low and run out of threads on a flat top. I have an extended post and I'll bring it to chilidog's tune up shoot. Maybe that will take care of your sight issue.

I would also recommend while at the 25m and on a 5 square do a box drill so you can learn the actual MOA per click for your rifle. This is some very valuable info to have and very easy to get in a setting like that. Especially the AR guys as there are so many different configurations that can be on the same AR.

I my honest opinion, if your rifle cannot run 250 rounds without a failure, sell it and buy a real rifle. This is my advice to those who insist on a spare rifle being needed.

If however this may be your one chance to shoot KD for the next year, and you do not want to go home for a failed extractor etc, then sure, bring a second rifle.

I've never had a fail in 3500 rounds of the AR, but the boyscout in me says "bring an extra extractor & spings - just in case"...

It's not like I am bringing my AK.

Sign up for this will end Thursday night at midnight.

Been getting dribs and drabs for info on people and rifles.

There will be a final call Friday morning for info.

Those on the instructor schedule will receive a PM. Those signed up through eventbrite will receive an email.  Please check to be sure that all info requested at that time is sent to myself and to in@appleseedinfo.org.  The info requested may include additional items.  Specifically DOB that has been missing from the info coming in thus far.  Please wait and send(resend) all info in entirety.  I promise no age jokes... :-X

Looks to be a fantastic event!!

Soooo...deadline is no longer the 29th?  Just asking for the sake of clarification.  I gave someone until Saturday to work out details for a loaner, hence why I haven't yet sent in my info.  If I need to him down, like, now, I can work on that.

A little embarrassed  :-[, but not too proud to ask...

I would love to come to Atterbury, but I have a couple things holding me back.
1. Time
2. Rifle

Time - Is it feasible to come out for Sunday only? I'm working sixty-eight hour weeks right now and I doubt I'll be able to make it out for Saturday. I don't want to drag everyone else down on Sunday because I missed out on Saturday.  I would rather stay home than hold the rest of you back.  There is a very slim chance that I could make it out for the whole weekend, but it's not impossible.  If Saturday attendance is mandatory to shoot on Sunday, can I come out Sunday just to watch and learn?

Rifle - I only have one rifle that is capable of reaching out to 400 yards, a Mosin Nagant 91/59 carbine.  My highest round count for a day with it is well south of 100. I honestly don't know if I can handle multiple AQTs behind that steel butt-plate, but I'm willing to try.  It's also slow; slow to cycle and slow to reload.  The sights and adjustments are crude  &).  The good news is that ammo is cheap and it's MY rifle.  I can buy a can of ammo and head to the range this weekend to line it out.  I've had a couple offers for loaners (thanks UD & AB); but I can't afford to feed Uncle Davey's M1 and AuntieBellum is too far away for me to have a chance to familiarize myself with her rifles beforehand.  I'm not above using a loaner, but it would need to be cheap to feed (I can get 300 rounds on chargers for the Mosin for $80) and close enough that I could meet you at a range this weekend to familiarize myself with it.

I would love to be a part of the KD weekend.  I've done very little shooting beyond 100 yards and have a lot to learn.  I think it will help me to be a better instructor.  But, dragging everyone else down for my sake is no fun.

Well, it's nearly 5:00 AM.  My alarm is going off in four hours to start another day.  Let me know if I should bother signing up, and don't be afraid of hurting my feelings if you feel I'll be too much of a drag; Appleseed is more important than me and my desire to come play too.

SPQR/YHJ/Bill 3 have to answer the question about sunday only.

However, if you are looking for a spare rifle, PM Slim.  He has a Colt A2 AR that he loans out all the time so long as you provide or pay for ammo.  I think everyone in the program has shot that thing at some point in time and it does shoot pretty nice - even with the foreweight removed.

Give him a buzz.

Lets all remember, we don't always shoot an AQT just for the Rifleman's score, we do it fer the learning.

Lets all remember, we don't always shoot an AQT just for the Rifleman's score, we do it fer the learning.

I'm definitely in this one fer the learnin'.  And what better teacher than a 7.62X54 carbine with a steel butt-plate! There will be a fire extinguisher nearby, right?  Cause, with the fireball this thing throws and our current grass conditions... well, I'll make sure to have an extra water bottle on the line.  I'm not concerned with getting a KD patch (or whatever acclaim comes with shooting 210 at KD).  I want to learn what it's like to actually shoot that distance so I can better relate it to the shooters.

I'm seriously fine with bringing and shooting my Mosin.  In my mind, it's kinda the spirit of the program.  Run what ya brung.  Bring, shoot, and learn YOUR rifle.  We're suppose to be able to do this with a rack grade rifle and rack grade ammo, right?  It's not suppose to require levitating handguards, hypercryomegahammersuperforgeduberbull barrels, 1/4 ounce triggers, 50# rifles, 300X range estimating NV capable scopes and handloads weighed to 0.000001 grains.  It doesn't get much more rack grade than a 70 year old rifle and ammo from the same era.  It may not be the fastest, or shoot the tightest groups.  But, I can almost guarantee I'll be the most hurtinest! ;D

The part I'm most embarrassed about is that I'll likely only be able to make it for Sunday and I don't want to slow everyone else down.  Of course, 55 seconds is 55 seconds, I probably can't slow that down.  But, if I show up with a rifle that's not zeroed for me... well I feel like that would be wasting y'all's time.  If the COF has a few minutes Sunday morning to shoot a group and do IMC, then I'm ok with borrowing anyone's loaner.  If not, I should probably stick with my Mosin.  The reality of my rifle situation is that I can only afford to feed one rifle for that weekend.  I can't feed my Mosin and also bring backup ammo for someone's M1, AR, AK, SKS, or Enfield if the Mosin proves to be too much for me.

So, to the Powers That Be: Is Sunday only alright?  As long as I promise to hustle and not waste everyone's time?

PS: Firefox's spellchecker hates me!  ;D

And he has the most insanely light trigger for a mosin you have ever seen.
Scary light.

As far as 55 second.  You only need 7 5's to hold your own.  You have a no target shifts, a feed ramp and 5 round internal mag - it is doable.

The trick is dead on for the first and fourth.

Oh, and, you know, if you really want to make that rifle all it could be, you might just take it over to the EBR side just a bit... (http://www.ebay.com/itm/new-Russian-91-30-M44-Mosin-Nagant-Rifle-PISTOL-GRIP-/320924432592?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab89638d0#ht_3344wt_898)

It's very liable to be hot. Ideally I want two coolers in the pits and one cooler at 100, 200, 300, and 400 yds. I have two five gallon construction drink coolers and two large picnic coolers that will hold three one gallon bottles with ice.

Who else can bring coolers? We will also need to plan on a run to town Saturday night to get them refilled.

We can pull RSOs from the line, but a LB would make things easier as I will already be listening to two radios. I am fine with different LB on Sat and Sun if any of you already KD experienced Riflemen don't mind shooting only one day.

I am getting ready to work out the squading for the relays. I need to know a few things.

-- Who has worked in the pits at a known distance range? Have you used spotters, have you worked target frames, etc?

-- Who has experience at Known Distance? Have you shot beyond 200 yards, doped wind, etc?

-- Who has a good working knowledge of battle sights/scopes? Can you re-zero a monkey'd up AR with A2 sights properly for a Battle Sight Zero?

Thanks, answers anytime in the next few minutes will be fine  O0

2. only shoot past 200 yds once. done at the last JTMC Appleseed weekend
3. Pretty confindent I can re-set a 20" AR 15 A2 sight system to BSZ

rear sight for elevation.  Not sure if that answers the question but there it is.

One more thing:  I will, sadly, only be able to make it for Saturday.

Thanks,

brian

No.
Shot 200 with a 22 and did fairly well, not much wind to dope though.
I "think" I can handle number 3. I've rehearsed it in my head, but have not had a rifle/range to practice on. Is it much more than advanced IMC?

Not a test, no one is expected to have done any of these things. I just want to spread the experience through both squads for everyone's benefit. So make a point of asking someone to show you number three  O0

Yes.
Yes-ish.  I haven't used A2 sights personally, but I am good with monkeys.  Will make a point to review different AR and other sight systems again before the weekend.

Also, while you don't want us having to hunt for the blue loctite when we're at Atterbury, it is helpful to bring with you to the range when getting an initial 25 yd zero.  So I learned.  Guess I'm going to the range two days in a row.   ;D

I was looking for a pic of Ed in his AC hat so I could say "not this blue locktite" and I stumbled upon this pic. This has got to be the best Hero shot ever at an Appleseed.

Zero pit experience.
Lots of KD shooting experience.
I can make AR sights prettier than AJ in about 12 seconds.

2.)  None
3.)  Now that I can do.  Piece of cake.  I'm getting better with my M1A sights as well, so I'm guessing I'd be good to go on a garand as well, but don't have one of those.

I meant to say:

Eyes gazing to the skies, the bearded one looked at the cloudless blue rectangle visible from deep within the concrete trench now his home.  With a stern nod, he turns back to his work of paper and steel, knowing that soon, far too soon, daggers of lead would race overhead ripping and tearing in their race to individual destinies.

Sweat dripping from old, salted hair, his thoughts were with those would would soon be on the land above, marching, dropping, firing, and pinning their hopes and dreams on the skills they learned so quickly yet so well.  "Remember your training.  It will save you..." he muttered, half memory, half prayer for those who would soon be fumbling for their future with hot steel, sweaty limbs, shaky hands, and eyes hard to see the grey figures emerging from the trenches arrayed against them.

There, the yell!  The shot fired and with it a volley!  The invisible chariots of speed breaking free of their confinement in steel and sound, race ahead with a crack each as if to nod like so many soldiers on parade, but with a sinister smirk in departure - their mark left in space a hole to be marked by the white puff of victory, or the dark black of failure.

Screams, yells, and the sudden din of silence brings the sounds of silence.  And from that silence comes merely the heavy breath of labor, of the old midwifes of the underworld birthing riflemen into daylight and thrusting them up and out all with the hopes that some day, they too, will breathe air full of cordite and the damp smells of victory.

But for now, the lot remains.  Tomorrows will have future enough.  Today is today, and in the pit there is work to do...

Weather forecast includes possibility for storms.  Be prepared.

Central Indiana High Power will be on Range 3 but not sending a lot of rounds downrange.  They will be out to 1000 yards.  Mmmmm....

Like JV said, it was nice to meet some people who I only knew on the forum by their screen names, some of them from Indiana!  Edheler, however, travelling from Pennsylvania!  Impressive.

The shooter peers under his Oakley's through a pair of binocs to see what damage his 4MOA fire has accomplished, his AR15 (in 5.56, NOT a .308 or any other .30 cal!) and 30-round magazine loaded with steel-cased ammo lie near by.  Oh, and of course, none of this can go without being accompanied by the ever-present "HUZZA!!!" that I guarantee you he is saying, or at least thinking, in this picture.  There's only one tactical operator fitting the description above that also has a squirrel tail his head.  Oh, what's that?  It's not a squirrel tail?  Oh, got it, it's the mowhawk.  Not a mowhawk, the mowhawk. -:)

my shoulder is killing me, was not tight enough to my rifle, need to work on my positions. from all the the information i have, and a nice convo with AB, i very much think i may be pushing into the rifle to try to mitigate felt recoil causing my shots to fall low. i got some great information this weekend, both for my rifle and technique.

overall, my feelings today, after all of this has settled in: i agree with spqr, epic is the only word to describe this past weekend. my whole body is sore, i need to get back into the gym.
i need to work on my positions with my m1 and work on not anticipating the recoil, this is not an issue with my ar or my .22lr. a sore shoulder only made it worse on sunday.
i know quite a bit. i still have a ton to learn. appleseed has a great group of instructors, and as i help teach heritage and marksmanship to anyone willing to listen, i will continue to learn from those that have come before me.
hats off to everyone who made this weekend possible.
HUZZAH!
