I am looking for my second big Father's Day gift. The first was my first double barrel an Over/Under Beretta with 20 and 28 gauge barrels. Now we have our second little one and I'm sure she wants to get me something as memorable. So as a good father I want to make sure she doesn't feel like a second fiddle. @)
I'm looking at a CMP rifle. Looking at a service grade Springfiled Armory M1 garand. Springfield made the M1 garand for service past WW2. If I buy from CMP am I sure to get a WW2 era rifle? I can't find that in the description. So am I likely to get a Korean War era gun?
They tend to be very accomidating. If you are going mail order, call them up and ask if they have a WWII and hold it until you fax in the order.

Just did the same thing, last month another seeder got a 1945.
I had heard they were up to1955.
You can go there and cherry pick what your lookin' for.
I am depending on them mentioned AS, in the past I have seen four fresh out the box and thought every time they sent a grade up from what was ordered. Never heard a bad word from the mail order part.
Many complaints from those who have made the journey. IE.. Too many to choose from, not enough time in the day, fingers got soar from handlin' too many, eyes blurreed after first thousand, system overload.
Either way good luck I have a felling in just a few short years these will be very hard to get!
I made the trip to AL CMP a couple of years ago - VERY glad I did. Yep, there's a lot of rifles to look over, but I had borrowed a gauge to check them all out, and ended up with a rough looking 3/1942 Springfield for 500 bucks. Bore was 2-2.5, stock was rough, but I put some new wood on it, Parkerized the steel, (easy home DYI) - now it looks great, shoots better. I'd make the trip, but bring lots o cash....
A WWII vintage service grade rifle may be hard to come by. I was at the North Store a few months ago and didn't see any in the SG racks. They had a number of field grade, WWII Springfields however.
If you are set on the right vintage, maybe give them a call.
Concur on the go-to-the-store suggestion...calling also useful. My sense is that South store MAY have more in way of
more/older items, and something to be said for physically-examining potential purchases...and CMP will also sell folks new barrels (save old, too) for Garands, Springfields, Enfields, etc., for about $190...
Trivia: CMP went through 40 MILLION (!) rounds of sealed, 1995, Remington .22 ammo in three days last month - probably because price to individuals was $90/5k and clubs $65/5k...suggest keep watching CMP site and joining their email notification list...
