picked up an older Ruger 10/22 a couple days ago
the price was right, still is, IMO
walnut stocked, 119-xxx series 16.5 inch carbine
some mods had been done, the first indication was the jeweled bolt
plastic aftermarket extended mag release - all the early 10/22s had the recessed mag release, it will be replaced
swapped in a VQ speed bolt release, which isn't working, but the extended mag release is worn/wobbly and may be the culprit.
a more serious issue:
close the bolt, with safety on , squeeze the trigger, hammer doesn't fall
push the safety off, finger nowhere near the trigger, and the hammer falls, every time
not good
prime suspects: sear, trigger, hammer, safety, probably in that order
what sucks is that the trigger is reaaaalllllyy good
swap 1 part out at a time ?
anybody got spares? I know, Midway
Thanks,
k
Have you disassembled and cleaned the fire control group yet?
Somebody has worked the hammer notch too much. You can upset the safety leg of the sear to properly fit the safety. You literally hammer the left edge if the sear to made the safety leg longer.
There is an observation hole (that's what I'm calling it :)) that lets you see the hammer engagement to the sear. Sounds like that there is such a small amount that when pressing the trigger the hammer is being disengaged and then only resting on the safety. Put your thumb on the hammer and watch it through that hole.
My bet is someone messed up a trigger job. You shoud also watch and make sure that there is a positive engagement. That is that the hammer moved backwards still as the trigger is pressed.
I will clean it thoroughly over the weekend and take a look at the other stuff mentioned.
Thanks to all,
k

The hammer and sear are restricted parts from the factory. Shooters Discount lists OEM hammers and sears, but are sometimes out of stock.
There are of course after market parts, however, you can make the ones you have work. ;)
Send me a PM if you need help.
