Hello from a new member,
What are the rules for the AQT, hoping to attend an event this weekend and would like to know how/what to expect.
I believe, 25M range using 4 different size targets. 1, 2,3 and 400 yards. Standing (100) sitting/kneeling (200), prone for both 3 and 400 yards.
what is format used?
Ex: 100... 1 target 5 rounds, 200 1 target 5 rounds, 300 2 targets 5 rounds per, 400 4 targets 5 rounds per.
I would like to familiarize myself before 0830 Sat morning if posible so any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, MJ52
here's the rundown for you:
Target is placed at 25m (82 feet) requires 40 rounds of ammunition
250 possible points; 210/250 required for an Expert rating (Rifleman)
Stage 1, Standing position, using a sling for support.
1 magazine, prepared with 10 rounds.
top target (largest, simulating 100 yards)
two minutes
50 points maximum
Stage 2, transition from standing w/empty rifle to a seated position.
two magazines, prepared with two and eight rounds
shooters to load rifles upon achieving proper seated position, starting with 2 round magazine
two targets on the second row, simulating 200 yard silhouettes; five rounds per target
total of 55 seconds for this course of fire
50 points maximum
Stage 3, transition from standing w/empty rifle to a prone position.
two magazines, prepared with two and eight rounds
shooters to load rifles upon achieving proper seated position, starting with 2 round magazine
three targets on the third row, simulating 300 yard silhouettes; rounds per target (left to right): 3,3,4
total of 65 seconds for this course of fire
50 points maximum
Stage 4, prone position (starts in prone, ends in prone)
one magazine, ten rounds
fourth row of targets; rounds per target: 2,2,3,3
five whole minutes for this stage
Each hit counts double, for 100 maximum points
Rules:
Stages 2 and 3 require a magazine change; the first magazine must have not more than two rounds in it.
No artificial support (bipods, sandbags, benchrest)
resting the magazine on the ground is also not allowed
Sling may be used in any position
Scoped or iron-sighted rifles (up to .32/8mm)
I'm sure they will be very clear but here it is:
The target has 4 stages from top to bottom
1: 1 target 10 round standing 2 minutes
2: 2 targets 5 rounds each transition from standing to sitting. Load 2 round mag, shoot into left target, load 8 rounds, fire 3 into left target and 5 into right target 55 seconds
3: 3 targets 3 rounds 3 rounds & 4 rounds Transition form standing to prone
Load 2 round mag shoot left target. Load 8 rounds and complete 65 seconds
4: 4 targets 2,2,3,3 load ten rounds prone 5 minutes.
Each round can score 5 points. Stage 4 points are doubled for a potential 250 points. 210 = rifleman.
Hope this helps

Thank you both very much for that information.
Being a lefty using a right handed bolt action 22 will present some serious challenges. But at least now I know what to expect.
Again thanks, MJ52
I don't know where you are or when you are planning to go, but yes being lefty with a righty bolt will be hard.
You NEED a sling. A GI-WEB or 1907. Accept no substitutes.
We do say "run what you brung" but you might ask the Shoot Boss if he or one of the instructors has a LTR you can borrow.
2cl
One correction of a typo.
"Stage 3, transition from standing w/empty rifle to a prone position.
two magazines, prepared with two and eight rounds
shooters to load rifles upon achieving proper seated prone position, starting with 2 round magazine
three targets on the third row, simulating 300 yard silhouettes; rounds per target (left to right): 3,3,4
total of 65 seconds for this course of fire
50 points maximum"
The rules are on the AQT itself.
The only difference between what's printed on there and what we do is now there are no loaded transitions. You'll start standing (Stage 2 and 3) and then transition to seated/prone BEFORE you load. Because of this, you get 10 extra seconds per stage.
Have fun!
Fun, are you kidding me.
I'm about to get a real buttock whoppin. Can't wait.
Thanks everyone
A different problem now..
10 shots 100 yards 2 mins standing... I can easily make the time and my groupings are getting closer. I shoot at something a little smaller than the 4 ring. Only second day firing freehand.
Spent quite a bit of time trying to find some kind of seated position that would allow me to reach over and cycle bolt. (lefty shooting righthanded bolt action). The Safety Officer is going to be all over me and probably rightly so. I feel so bound up and scrunched together. I can brely cycle the bolt 10 times let alone change a magazine and hit a target. Oh I forgot to mention start from standing.
This 200 yarder is going to be the biggest hurdle.
Prone is coming together for me as well, I'm able to reach over much more easily. I didn't work on the 2 different tests. I just put 1 x 1.5" at 25 yards and tried to shoot the spot out. 1 shot per piece. Shot different sets as well 1, 2 and 3 shots per piece.
SEATED is going to bite me on the buttocks. Need help desperately with this one. Going to buy knee and elbow pads today. Not sure about kneeling, If any good ideas and I can get those pads I'll try that tomorrow
Thanks MJ52

It is shot at 25 meters, the target size simulates 100 yds.

We will help you find a workable position. Maybe kneeling will work better?

2 clicks low,
I appologize, I am at 25M and using the target that were taken off this site. I just fold construction paper to a size that equals the 4 ring, draw a torso and make my circles.
Seated is quite difficult, but I have 2 more days to keep banging at it.
Nothing like a challenge, is there?
Thanks, MJ52
mj52,
You're left handed I take it, but do you know if you have a dominant eye? Unless your left eye is dominant and your right eye is much weaker you might find it easier to just shoot right handed. I am right-handed but generally shoot left handed because my left eye is much stronger than my right one. I never had any problems learning to shoot lefty being right handed.
Ed
If you are going this weekend, stop practicing now. The weekend is close and we will work you to the max. So practice streaching and nothing else. I often question the value of uninstructed practice. You may build muscle memory on the wrong positions. Especialy if you have not found the right positions for NPOA.

Ed,
I'm a true lefty, left eye dominant, the whole enchilada. I only have a right arm so I can hold a bottle of beer when I need to twist it open.
2 clicks low,
Good, stopping would be a good idea and now I have someone to blame. I'm not disheartened, nor mad at myself. I actually enjoy the challenge. 0830 rain or shine off rte2 it is.
A final question ( I doubt it )
I have a sling I made from 1 1/2" webbing, quite strong and holds where I set it. Are your slings for sale at these events if it's determined mine is poo-poo.
SOME instructors bring extra slings that they will sell. Some may bring one to loan. Some belive in "run what ya brung". You may see all 3 types at 1 shoot.
The reason we like the GI web sling / 1907 is they do both the loop sling and hasty well. We teach loop for prone, sitting & kneeling. Hasty for standing. You may use eithor as works for you.
Since I've been ordered to stop training. Tomorrow will be my first "Fire when ready".
I have one of those swinging 2 target thingies. I need to use up 100 rounds before I break into a 3 box set of the same batch.
I'm going to enjoy the next 2 days. Not a single bit of practice. Just good safe fun. There are some dandelions at the 25 yard range 1/2 way up the berm. I have this 2 target thingie. 100 rounds could easily last me 2 hrs with coffee.
It's all your fault 2 clicks, all your fault.
Yes it's my fault.
Wait till we are done with you, 100 rounds won't last 1 hour. 40 per AQT.
Regular AQT's fire in under 20 minutes. The east coast does "fast AQT's", 4 mags 10 rounds each shoot the full AQT, transition unloaded. Oh yeah, you get 4 minutes to do the whole thing. :pop:

Bring it on big guy. I've been beaten up by smaller men. Been married for a very long time too. That should qualify me for something.
Looking forward to the experience. Thank goodness 22lr is reasonably priced. I like 4-10 round clips idea a lot.
Just curious - where are you attending? I'd like to meet someone with so much enthusiam. ^:)^
Have a great weekend. We teach you the foundation. I have no doubts you will build on that.

I'll be in Harvard, Just walk toward the range officers trying to help the old fat guy up. you'll be able to figure it out.

This is me warming up.
Harvard, MA!
I won't be there, as I'm going to be at Proctor, VT. You'll be in good hands. I personally know most, if not all, of your Instructors, and they are real good. Tell the short guy with a beard, wearing a Red Hat that Nickle says hi.
Yup, I'll wager you'll be doing lots of AQT's.
Since you're a lefty shooting a right handed rifle, I recommend using kneeling instead of sitting. Less stable, but easier to work the bolt.
The hello part I can do.
Nickle,
There were many red hats there yesterday, several with beards, there was 1 in particular. Does the fella I'm loking for put a stuffed bird of some sort on the roof of his car? Does this fella also sometimes sell slings and associated hardware at cost? Does this fella also sometimes speak to the entire group? I hope so because he's the one I spoke to for you.
Got my butt kicked yesterday. Trouble with the new sling the entire day. AQT's with an offhand bolt action is not the way to go. The need to reacquire target because of up and over motion to cycle bolt destroyed any chance to even finish all 40 rounds in the allotted time.
Safety was absolutely Job 1. Not even a hint of any concern. The transition from standing to seated or prone was drilled and drilled. Okay by me.
The History lesson was fabulous. 3 parts by 3 different speakers spread throughout the day was very good.
only 2 1/2 hours till we do it again.
Glad to hear it went OK. I don't know of anybody that's been able to shoot rifleman with an offhand bolt. So, if you plan on coming back, another rifle would be nice, aye? And that's a whole nother topic, and I don't wanna derail this thread yet.
Spent the entire day laying in a puddle. Not really sure why I found that so enjoyable so long ago.
Spent the morning with the rudiments group. Truth is truth.
2 Instructors appraoched me after lunch. "you shot 230, what do you need?" "A semi-auto." "Okay, move your mats."
3 hours later I'm awarded my badge. shooting a 218.
I can't speak highly enough of the effort put forth by the UNPAID VOLUNTEERS assisting a 60 yr old with a good attitude and feet that squished.
I know I'm going to miss some names and I appologize. So I'll just thank the entire cadre of Instuctors this weekend in Harvard Mass.
The education regarding our Heritage was worth the time and effort put forward.
I can't speak highly enough of the dedication, the amount of free time spent, the effort put forth in the service of others. A potentially life changing event for those willing to listen and learn.
Harvard in June I believe
I THOUGHT that was you! :)
Well done sir! You did GREAT!
When I was leaving I thanked every hat I saw one last time. You weren't there. But I did thank you earlier.
Do me a favor please.
Stand up, extend both arms straight out, wrap them around yourself and hug.
That's from me.

Now, I don't know about a stuffed bird, so I can't speak for that part.
The one I was referring to was Dwarven1. A real good guy to know.
Good job on the Rifleman score.
Wow. A 218 with an off hand bolt? Well done, sir.
Roland,
I used one of the Instructor's AR15 semi-auto with a dot scope. A semi-auto is the only way to take this test.
The dot was about the size of a pea because so much water had gotten all over the 2 pieces of this scope. Most of the time it looked like an I rather than a dot. I assume a 2 piece scope has 4 pieces of glass exposed to the weather And I was only able to wipe 2 of the 4. Clear shooter's glasses are also a magnet for drops and fog.
I would like to thank Mike (Baxter ??) for offering the use of this rifle.
I had a ball, my hands are no longer wrinkled and my boots should be dry by tomorrow. A great experience in every regard.
As a new IIT, I'm easily confused.
Reply #1 by ItsanSKS posted 4-17-2012 tells that the corrected Stage 2 time is 55 sec and Stage 3 time is 65 sec.
Reply #6 by Slim posted 4-18-2012 tells that to account for the fact that transitions with a loaded rifle are no longer done, to use an extra 10 sec per stage (Stages 2 and 3). Printed times on the AQT target are 50 sec for Stage 2 and 60 sec for Stage 3.
Putting all this together, ItsanSKS is using 55 sec for Stage 2 and 65 sec for stage 3; Slim is using 60 sec for Stage 2 and 70 sec for Stage 3.
To me that means that someone is getting an extra 5 sec or someone is getting shortchanged 5 sec when shooting Stages 2 and 3.
What is the right answer; standardization!!

While I am also only an IIT1 when in doubt check the instructor manual which says 55 and 65 seconds. My guess is everyone is using that and either someone said they added 10 seconds when it was only 5 or policy was later changed and it was reduced by 5 to where it is now. Of course my previous sentence is pure speculation.
mj,
Metalgodz is the instructor who loaned you that AR - there's a fine picture of you with it up in the AAR thread. (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=29123.0)
I'll be looking for you on the line again soon!
Message received, Nickle. And yes, I had a vulture perched on the tailgate of my car this weekend. Why? I don't know. Just seemed like the thing to do.
Soon as I saw the post about left-handed shooter and a right-handed bolt-action, I knew who it had to be; I remember you, mj52! Well shot, BTW.
Metalgodz,
Just found out who to actually thank for the borrowed rifle.
THANK YOU.
You folks will see me again. Won't be in May though, a prior commitment.
Thank You One and All
Stage 2 is 55 seconds, Stage 3 is 65 seconds.
That isn't up for discussion either, but is well established policy. We didn't add 10 seconds, we added 5 seconds.
Some shooters shouldn't be doing transitions, due to stability issues or bad joints. They can shoot after somebody else fires the first shot (a shooter that did transition).
