Title: Aguilar Super Colibri
Post by: Justsomedude on April 16, 2012, 05:27:55 PM
Just got a box of 500 from www.cheaperthandirt.com

There is a disclaimer about using these with Rifles.
I think they must have had a Squib get stuck in a rifle barrel and cause a KB.
They are very quiet out of a Rifle barrel (quieter than CB Loads even).
NOT AS QUIET FROM A PISTOL.

They won't cycle semi auto.
They will chamber just fine from the mag on a Mossberg Plinkster (I read that they won't load from a 10/22 mag).

Very accurate from 25'
I shot a box in my Garage. Good fun.

Just tried 5 rounds from 45'
NOT ACCURATE
Probably accurate enough to hit beer cans....not AQT though.
Will have to clean the chamber and try to be more scientific to test accuracy and make sure it wasn't 'shooter induced'.

I can confirm that the Super Colibri are not Stable in my Mossberg Plinkster at 45'.
About a 4" group with most rounds missing a Stage 2 Target is about all I could get. Not useful.

At 25' Standing I punched out the "V" Zone with 10 rounds.
Seems fairly consistent up close.
So somewhere between 25' and 45' they go wild out of my Rifle.

The manufacturer knows more than we do:
From the ad on CTD
"Aguila Super Colibri is super quiet ammo that does not contain gun powder but fires from the force of the primer only. Powerful and silent, great for use in urban areas. This is a 20 grain solid lead bullet in a brass case. Will break glass and penetrate hard tin cans. Velocity is 500 FPS at the muzzle with 11 ft/lbs of energy and can be lethal. This ammo works great and is intended for .22 handguns only."
When you start doing things outside of manufacturer recommendations you more often than not get unsatisfactory results.

I mentioned that in my first post.
That wasn't an accuracy warning....they are concerned that a Colibri bullett might not go all the way out of the Barrel.
Then if you fire a normal round behind it you could blow up your barrel.

I make sure all of my rounds impact.
Then I run a Boresnake or Rod though the barrel after shooting and usually before the next session.

I had read on the Internet that the Super Colibri was 'accurate out to about 50'.
They are not.....

The Winchester CB Match seem to be though.

I've never gotten good results from the Super Colibri, either.

CCI CB longs and Remington CeeBee's however are nearly as quiet and at least average accuracy (it's been awhile and I last fired them before attending an Appleseed ;) )  Still won't cycle a semi, but feed fine for me in my 597's.

I've shot them from my 10-22 in the house, yes they won't cycle but I've had no trouble with them feeding from a mag by hand.

One that I've experimented with that some of you might want to try is the Aguilar SSS (Sniper SubSonic). Much quieter than normal high velocity ammo, they'll shoot groups half the size the CCI Mini Mags I normally shoot, and they cycle the actions just fine. DO NOT shoot these in the house unless you have a substantial back stop as they carry as much KE as a normal .22lr. They are subsonic because of a heavy bullet, not due to less powder/tiny bullet. Very accurate out to 50 yards but due to low velocity start dropping like a rock past that. I like them out of my Ruger 22-45 also. Anyway, something to play with.....O.L.
