I got an email from the NRA talking about Senate Bill 2188. You can find the details here:
http://www.nraila.org/legislation/federal-legislation/2012/national-right-to-carry-reciprocity-act-of-2012-introduced-in-us-senate.aspx?s=&st=&ps= (http://www.nraila.org/legislation/federal-legislation/2012/national-right-to-carry-reciprocity-act-of-2012-introduced-in-us-senate.aspx?s=&st=&ps=)
I just fired off and email to both of Indiana's Senators that read,
I am writing to urge you to support S. 2188, the "National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2012." Passage of this bill would allow me and other law-abiding citizens to defend ourselves outside of our home states without going through an often confusing check of other states' laws.
Currently the nation is a patchwork of reciprocity agreements where states recognize the licenses and permits of some states but not others. Passage of this bill would leave the guesswork out of my decision to carry outside of Indiana.
Sincerely,
Feel free to use the above as a template or a starting point for your own. Contact your Senators. Let them know how you feel. They work for you. Remind them of it!

there is a lot of positive points to this bill but a lot of people are worried that it is just a national list of all gun owners too. I'll see if I can find the other information people have been giving ref this bill
http://ingunowners.com/forums/the_2nd_amendment/202393-s_2188_national_right_to_carry_reciprocity_act_of_2012_a.html
and the one I was thinking about for a national registry is the one that stalled out late last year. either way we need to watch this carefully imo.
Text of the bill can be found in .pdf format here:
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112s2188is/pdf/BILLS-112s2188is.pdf (http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112s2188is/pdf/BILLS-112s2188is.pdf)
It's only 4 pages long so it's a quick read. I see nothing in there about a national registry. Check out the link given in the first post of this thread to see what the NRA's take on this bill is. They are better at reading legalese than most of us, I would imagine.

The names of 3 Senators are listed on the first page of the bill. I checked them on the NRA's Political Victory Fund Grades and Endorsements page. http://www.nrapvf.org/grades-endorsements.aspx (http://www.nrapvf.org/grades-endorsements.aspx)
Here's what I found from that site alone:
Mark Begich, Democrat, Alaska. In 2008 the NRA graded him "AQ" which they define as "A pro-gun candidate whose rating is based solely on the candidate's responses to the NRA-PVF Candidate Questionnaire and who does not have a voting record on Second Amendment issues."
Joe Manchin, Democrat, West Virginia. In 2010 the NRA graded him "A"
Max Baucus, Democrat, Montana. In 2008 the NRA graded him "A+"
I don't know how they have performed/voted since then on 2nd Amendment issues. If you have info on that please point it out.

GOA Ratings: (from http://gunowners.org/112thsrat.htm)
Begich D
Baucus D-
Manchin Not Rated
GOA ratings carry more weight with me ,since GOA uses a larger picture of RKBA .
That being said ,every gunowner should be a NRA member ! NRA does a good job keeping us informed .
I am unsure of getting federal permission is a good idea long term .
Many states have reciprosity w/o any fed involvement . Would be nice to avoid states that do not respect RKBA.
I agree entirely. The basic problem as I see it is once the Federal Government gets involved then they will start tacking on additional rules and regulations over time. You can hear the whiny voices in your head now: "Why do you really need to carry a Desert Eagle concealed?"

S. 2188 great, outstanding idea...except for a few, relatively insignficant states:
New York, New Jersey, MASSACHUSETTS, California, Illinois...zip reciprocity, zip consistency (e.g a New York City pistol permit [5 yr renewable for serious, revenue-producing bucks] is good thoughout the state, while the good-until-revoked permits for the rest of the state are NOT valid in NYC = perfect, and so supportable and fair...), and ZIP possibility of being passed or adopted as law. Period. Simple fact. Move on. Sucks to be us...could be worse - could be the subjects from whom we took this country, i.e. British...
Excelsior,
