Title: Raton, NM NRAWC Feb. 18-19, 2012
Post by: TaosGlock on February 28, 2012, 10:55:45 PM
Another superb Appleseed. The first one held at the NRAWC this year. And 5 more to come!
And this was the earliest Appleseed ever scheduled at the NRAWC.
We were hoping for a full blown blizzard and cold temps, wet ground and slush. IOW a "Winterseed".
But all we got was clear sunny days with cool temps and a wind chill.  ;)
Ah yes, New Mexico is truly the "land of enchantement".
We had a total of 3 shooters come out and get re-aquainted with their heritage and to begin to master the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship.
Way to persist, Kathy, Grant and Mac!

The schedule is full at the NRAWC. :(
But a IBC can actually be done anywhere. There is a rare chance we could score one of the little out buildings. I can ask.
How many folks do you/would you have coming?  The more the merrier! O0

KD time:
A tele of the 900 yard plate. Plenty of dirt around it to call the shot. That is part of Step 6 of the 6 Steps to Firing the Shot
The plate is roughly 27". How many MOA is that?
(http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/8860/30065643.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/94/30065643.jpg/)

A 24" 308 Win. semi-auto on an AR platform is a most capable rifle at 900 yards as Kathy proves on the steel.
BlueFeather coaches.
Yes, that is a bipod.  ;) ^-^

Mac gets some coaching on wind. According to the flags and other natural indicators, the wind speed was 10 mph but only a half value.
How many MOA correction into the wind direction is needed? These all provide good reviews of IMC.

Angle shooting at a lasered 900 yards also requires some minor corrections. In the field, aim a bit lower when in doubt.
The 15 degree angle makes this distance 865 yards. Note the wind blowing the green mat.

Ah yes, Winterseeds in New Mexico.
(http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/5389/img6308e.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/703/img6308e.jpg/)

Time to dispense with those spring loaded gadgets or "the rifle with the leg thingys" as one of our students said, and do it with simplicity and precision.
(http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/3204/39508962.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/35/39508962.jpg/)

An M1 Garand hits with authority and accuracy. Add an adjustable gas port and a handload and you have a most capable rifle.
Attending a 2 day Appleseed qualifies a student to purchase an M1 Garand. Another bonus of the program. O0

Everyone does KD at the NRAWC. BlueFeather shoots while the student take turns instructing, i.e. call the shot and help with wind corrections. Grant is spotter in this case.

Grant fired the last shots from the M1 as the light was fading.

Thanks to our Founders for sacrificing all they had to give us our Liberties.
We at the Appleseed Project will never forget these sacrifices.

Thanks to our students for showing up, you are a cut above the rest of America.
Thanks to the NRAWC staff for your support and the private use of the Coors Range.
