Title: Mil surplus pulldown component questions
Post by: Son of Martha on June 14, 2007, 07:39:25 PM
I know WC-844 is for .223, and 5010 is .50 cal, how about WC-846?  Anybody have a list?

While on the subject, what is the difference between "#1 grade" and "unsized" pulled bullets?

Anyplace to get PRIMED pulldown brass?

Check the .308/7.62 thread, as that is what it is for.

The difference will be the quality, and the #1 grade term is that seller's term.

I get unsized pulled bullets, and have had no problems. I did get some 5.56 bullets that looked like they were pulled with pliers, so I used them for plinking ammo.

If you get get primed pull down brass, I'd question the reliability of the primers. Remember, primers are fairly cheap, can be easily had for under $20 per thousand.

I have been using wc846 for both 5.56 nato and 7.62 nato using
BL-C(2) load data.  I know pat's reloading did have some for 100 bucks for 8 lbs. plus shipping and hazmat. The primers are going up in price, I bought several thousand CCI NATO spec primers for 5.56 for 27 bucks a box at a gun showrecently were last year I paid 20.  Check out wideners for CCI primers also, they had "surplus" primers that are identical to new production and they were about 16 bucks for 1k.  I have shot several hundred rounds of these without a hiccup. As for brass check out TOPBRASS. they have sized, trimmed unprimed military brass for about 10 cents shipped.  Thus far I have experienced good quality and good service from them.

SoM, I apologize for forgetting to mention that you might want to look for unprimed brass that has had the primer pocket crimps removed. Careful, as they're frequently UGLY jobs, using a chamfering tool and a lathe (chuck the tool in the headstock, hold the case), and I prefer to do my own, as I know what I get after.

SoM,

The last time I saw it, they were REQUIRED to either remove or pop the primer while demilling the ammo, it was one of the points they had to meet.  So, if you encounter any that is primed, be real careful of it, you don't want the govt. coming to take it back because it was not properly demilled.

Maybe Nickel could get info on that?

I would much prefer that they leave the primer pockets alone and let ME take care of them.  I much prefer swaging them to cutting them with a chamfer tool.  To the point I might not buy their brass if processed by cutting!

Many of them are chemically inert primers, if the primers are still there.

Like I said, primers are cheap, replace them regardless.

After you've pulled down a few hundred rounds, just to change the primers, you won't make the mistake again.
