Hi. Im thinking about eathier getting an ar or a 15-22, i would get a 22 conversion kit for the ar if i got it. i mostly shoot .22's. i would use the bigger caliber very rarely. so my question is, should i get the 15-22 or a ar with a conversion kit.
Want the third alternative?
Buy the AR, get a dedicated upper for it. Costs more, but works well.
My advice is not one of the three. Buy the AR and build a 10/22 based LTR. Might look different and feel different, but the transition between the two isn't as much as you think.
Put your money into software (skills improvement), not hardware.
Yep. What Nickle said.
You can get pretty close to an AR in 10/22 form with a Tapco (or similar) stock. You'll save a bunch of money and can use all that to buy more ammo. It can't be said enough - SHOOT MORE!!!
yep. i wont be getting one for a while though, im just looking at my options for when i do,
Well, that makes it a real easy choice then.
If you don't have the .22 yet, then go the 10/22 LTR route for right now. You can start on your skills as you wait to buy your AR, and along the way, you may very well change your mind on some of the things you would have done.
I have a very good friend that was bound and determined to shoot irons, and he loved the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine, and was going to use iron sights. He found as he traveled the path to good marksmanship that he really needed to use optics. That made some minor changes in his plan, he ended up mounting optics on his Garand, IIRC. The Carbine idea fell by the wayside, as he found it wasn't worthy of his ability (he was a far better shooter than a Carbine is capable of).
Though I'll leave him nameless, he might reply to this, as he is a Shoot Boss in this program now.
When you don't have two pennies,
I have all of the above,But,
I have an Olympic arms A-2 style,($650)OTD
A used Air force conversion kit$90
I don't think anyone out there, can compare without having inherited stole or bought used or on clearence.
Anyway I'm in Action for $740,
The conversion takes seconds,
its amazing, and all for peanuts,
If I were patient I could have saved another $120, So $620
$740 no deal no sale.
I equate my Olympic Arms plinkster to the rock Island, It will eat anything and like it!
I also have a Rugger SR10/22 this is an awsome LTR for the LIL' folks.
Gun show this weekend featured -
ARs in .223 (DPMS, S&W) for $650 or less
ARs in .22 (S&W MP15-22 and kit built "multical" lowers w/Chiappa uppers) for around $480
AR lowers for $210
AR uppers in .22 for $269
CMMG conversion kits for $150
Ruger 10/22 for under $200
So, if you want "both" then the dedicated upper is definitely the way to go. Plus, they came with two mags. Throw on the .223/5.56 upper of your choice (when you're ready) and you're all set. Personally, I like the LTR 10/22 because that's one more rifle plus it's a rifle someone else can use. If you have a dedicated upper, you basically have two rifles... only one of which works at a time.
Happy shootin!
