Title: Mag carriers?
Post by: Justsomedude on January 04, 2012, 10:17:34 PM
I have Belt Mag Pouches for my handguns and Speed Strippers (3 Gun Style) for Shotgun.  But those are for SPEED reloads.

What do you guys tend to use for your Mags?
For HOME use I tend to keep a small Haversack or sling bag near my Shotgun.
If you NEED your Shotgun quickly you don't have time to put on your "Bat Utility Belt" :)

I can see where a Sling bag might get in your way going Prone and trying to reload from it.

Thanks
Dude

P.S.
Initially this is for Five 10 round .22 Mags.
Pretty small

I just keep mine with a couple savage and CZ mags in an arko bin.
The arko bin will also hold a brick of ammo along with the mags, not really prepared to run and gun.

M1 carbine magazine pouches (for 15-round magazines).  They will also hold 10-round Ruger 10-22 magazines or a D-clip of M1 Garand ammo.  I personally use these and they work great!

The following might be another option.  I don't have any experience with this type of belt with 10-22 magazines.

Pockets work just fine.

+1 on that. My best advice is to keep it simple. .22 mags fit nicely in a pocket, and that's what I've always used, even while out hunting.

Now, bigger mags, you've got some decent choices. Hitting a gun show and looking for surplus bags works too. Longer term storage, I put the mags in ammo cans. You can pad a ".30 caliber" ammo can with corrugated  cardboard and store AR, M14 or FN-FAL mags. I store mine empty.

As to "web gear", I'm no fan of it on a range. Always seems to get in my way.

Gents and Ladies,
Just to muddy the mag waters some more...several companies, including E. Arthur Brown Co., sell clips that allow two - or three- Ruger 10-22 magazines either end-to-end (for 2) or in a triangle pattern (for 3 mags).  The triple units are $9.95 each...and either might be of interest, particularly in the RFAQT COF...
Disclaimer:  have seen them used on line @ PA events, have not tried them myself - yet.  Still trying to sort out the Smith and Wesson M&P15-22 loaner unit I bought via IPP @ appx. $360...
Note:  still working on convincing Ruger/TALO Distrib. to create/offer Ruger Appleseed Training Rifle - stay tuned...

Wow - that would be a huge win for Project Appleseed promotions.  Keep it up!

I just want to have the 'correct' gear to get the most out of the Training.
And of course to build proper habits for future Rifles.
Thought that maybe there was a Standard type of Pouch that was used.

For Appleseed, you won't need pouches.  Just bring a teachable attitude.  You will use 1 or 2 magazines at a time and leave them on your mat or keep one in your pocket.  We recommend bringing 5 magazines so you can quickly prepare for the stages of the AQT target.

Appleseed is not that type of training.

For our purposes, you'll need to do one mag swap (a couple more on the RFAQTs) and your mag can - and will! - stay on the mat. There is no "tactical reload" or "dumping it in your pouch" at Appleseeds and we won't train you how to do so. As a matter of fact, we don't do any training at all.

We provide instruction!

Appleseed is a laid-back, family-friendly, fun atmosphere moreso than a "training course." I don't want to turn you off of our program, but if that's what you're looking for you'll be pleasantly surprised to show up and find out you're going to learn so much more in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Heck, you probably won't even get yelled at all weekend and the only time you'll be told to "move quickly" is when walking down to check your targets and walk back.

But, don't be alarmed. Almost all of us have mag pouches and "kit" of some type and we'd be more than happy to talk to you all night long about the best set up, the best way to attach it, the best techniques, etc. We just don't do that while "on the clock" at the events because that's not what we're about. We're too busy passing on the heritage of rifle marksmanship. HUZZAH!!!

Yup, just a good old fashioned marksman course (and some interesting history with lessons that hold true today).

If you're looking for tactical rifle training, I'll mention to you that what we teach might not be a tactical course, but is something every tactical shooter should learn.

Our course has helped for many military members in Iraq and Afghanistan. Even works in a small alley in an Afghan village. Taliban didn't fare so well, but Appleseed trained troops had no more than minor injuries. They knew how to shoot accurately and in a timely manner, not "spray and pray".

Understood, thanks.

Incidentally, I found that my Single Stack mag holders do an OK job with the .22 mags.

Now, that wasn't me, in a direct sense. But, it was an RWVA IIT that reported it back to me, and my pride is in knowing I was one of the people that taught them that. He credits most of it to the Rapid Fire drills I use to teach cadence. (10 shots on a square in a set time, starting about 40-45 seconds, working down to 10 shots in 15 seconds, and I know a few boltgun shooters that can meet that and retain a 4 MOA standard.)

O0 To all that Nickle ans Slim said!

What I have found that works great for Appleseed or just going to the range are Military Canvas Tool Bags.  I have one for 10-22s and one for Marlin 795s (yeah I own, shoot & love both).  They are 6"x12"x7" with carry handles and zipper closure.  You can get 2000 rounds of .22 LR plus cleaning gear, screwdriver, small tools, ear protection, note book, Owner's Manual, rag, extra magazines etc. in them.  They are heavy canvas with a hard bottom.  Cost me about $10.00 each at the Army Surplus store.  I have a larger one I use when I am helping at a 'seed to carry all of my extras and loaner stuff.  At the same store I picked up a similar bag for my M1A.  I don't think it is a G.I. Tool Bag but it is made out of the same material and heavy construction.

For Appleseed just leave em on the mat.  I am curious about those leather double 10/22 rotary clip pouches and attaching it somehow to the buttstock.  That would be very Appleseed friendly I think.

I got a stock sleeve and sliced every other row of stitches.  My magazines are about as wide as two centerfire hunting cartridges, with allowances due to elastic material.  I haven't used it for Appleseed, though.  It'd be handy for a .22 firefight against enraged squirrels, but not for an AQT.

I don't recall where I got the idea, or I'd give credit/attribution.  This is the sort of sleeve I'm talking about:

Nice range bags, Craig. Folks, if you want a setup for shooting at an Appleseed, there's a good one. Looks like he covered the essential things you should have, gives you a bag to keep everything in (so you don't forget stuff), and keeps it neat.

But, like many of us have said, all you really need is the bare essentials. Craig's range bags are nice to have, and recommended, even if not 100% essential to get started out.

I have a folding chair with a pouch in the bottom and it's awesome for Appleseed. I'll bring that and my cooler and I'm all set. Or, I'll bring a 5 gal. hunting bucket that I have. It has a cooler in the bottom and a tray on top.

All you really need is your rifle, something to lay on, mags, something to sit on while you're not shooting, and a little bag or something to keep your staple gun, ammo, pogey bait, etc., If any or all of those can be combined into one item, all the better.

I laugh when I see people bringing wagon loads of stuff to the firing line. Same goes for all the "kit" some folks feel it necessary to have on while shooting. If you're wearing jeans or sweatshirt with a handwarmer pocket you have all the "kit" you need.

The ones they sell at my local Cabela's are of very poor quality. The stitching is rough and uneven, and they are unbelievably stiff. Other manufacturers might be OK, but I would stay away from these. Plus they are made in Taiwan!

I have a bag similar to Craig's and my magazines live in empty Federal bulk pack boxes.
