I just ordered a Cotton GI Sling from Tech Sights.
I have an extra set of Uncle Mikes 1" Swivels.
I know the GI Sling is 1.25"
Will the Uncle Mikes 1" work?
It seems like the sling will FIT in the swivel....I'm guessing some one here has tried this before.
Thanks

Uncle Mike's makes 1&1/4 inch QD swivels.

No, it won't fit in the 1" swivels because of the width of the metal piece on the end of the sling. You need the 1-1/4 swivels.
But they are only $9 or so.
You can fit the sling in a one inch swivel by folding the metal tab perpendicular to the sling and pushing it through. It will be pinched but usable.
You'll be happier long run if you just replace the swivels. Every adjustment will be a struggle if you don't.
Ramblinwreck
Don't be cheap. Spend $10 and get the correct swivel.

I cut the metal tip off GI sling . It is not perfect but easier than getting the larger swivel , in most cases.
A GI nylon can be melted ,and will not cause problem rethreading through the smaller swivel.
I strongly suggest folks try to get the 1 1/4 swivels as mentioned here .
Just saying, if the choice is no sling or a cut tip . Cut the thing w/o hesitation ::)
Rather than drive around town or calling and sitting on hold for an hour....
I just went on eBay and got them.
Took about 2 minutes but were $18 with Shipping (for two swivels)

That's just crazy. That particular board is supposed to be open/available to everyone since it is there expressly to share helpful information on rifles/accessories used at Appleseeds.
this is the "path" that shows on my screen:
Project Appleseed - National Headquarters - Volunteers Welcome >> Appleseed Welcome Center >> Appleseed Lobby >> Helpful Appleseed Rifle Information
Dryfire is the moderator for the Appleseed Lobby. I'll PM him to see if there is some kind of access issue that is affecting lots of folks that are newer to the program. Really, even visitors should be able to access it since that's its purpose - sharing helpful rifle information.
for some reason it won't let me edit the above post. The mod is not dryfire, its a couple of other folks, I'll still PM them.
Sorry, bud, I'm no longer allowed to help folks here. Maybe you can PM the moderators.
can't PM, can't edit my posts, can't ask for help. Someone will probably remove or modify this post due to its perceived negative intent. You get what you deserve. Hope they like it. I suppose they'll expect me to continue to support the program elsewhere even when I can't support it here, properly. hmmm.
This is as far as I can go:

* Appleseed Welcome Center >>

That link is working fine for me.

That's what I get too

Whew! I thought it was just me. I've sent an e-mail to the Appleseed SMF administrators to let them know there is a security/permissions issue.

Just tried the "trouble" link and it worked fine for me, go figure. As for the 1.25" swivels Uncle Mike's as well as several others make them but the big box stores and a lot of spoting goods stores don't carry them. If you have a military surplus store, especially one that sells firearms, try there. The one I go to sells them new as well as "take offs". I have been able to get them out of their "take off" bucket for $2.50 each.
Craig
I can't touch Craig's price, but I've had very good experience with Talon 1.25 inch quick release swivels made by The Outdoor Connection. The stainless are especially nice, but I haven't had as much problem with rusting (compared to other swivels) even with the blued.

On the other hand, some of my rifles have stock 1" swivels that are nice and sturdy and not so easy to change. I've had no problem just turning the metal end cap sideways as suggested above and slipping it through the front swivel. Once it's on, it's on, so you can't leave it hanging on your arm, but my view is that you're much better off putting it on an off repeatedly. First, that makes you get really good at it; there's really some muscle memory and skill in getting consistent snugness etc. And second your students see a sling demo repeatedly.

FF, "Once it's on, it's on, so you can't leave it hanging on your arm, but my view is that you're much better off putting it on an off repeatedly."
I put "J" hooks on both ends so they can leave them hanging. I'd rather them spend time in positions and working through the 6 steps than messing with slings, they can't get position and 6 step coaching at home, but they can work with slings. Speeds things up and a better use of our time IMO. But that's just me....O.L.
I'm a big fan of making them get in and out of the sling the hard way, until it imprints into their memory. The reason is what I've seen with return Appleseeders that had to be shown how to use a sling all over again. After a half dozen to dozen times of getting in and out of it, they have retained enough to be able to do it on their own later.
That link doesn't work for me either. And I'm a red hat, so shouldn't I have access to everything anyway?
I'm in favor of olad's method. Add to that the fact that prep periods tend to get rather short on day 2, and as a shooter I would rather spend time dry firing then messing with my sling.

"get really good at it"? "muscle memory"? "skill"? ...................That's just crazy talk. ^-^
Like my arch. professor once told me -"the best way to get better at drawing, is to draw, draw, draw!" Adversity breeds character. Adversity is an opportunity in disguise. I will seek out adversity and I will prevail.
I am a big believer in perfect practice. I shoot a rack grade rifle in competition next to guys with 17lb, $2K "service rifles", simply because I will not spend time learning something that I would never actually use. It's not about that weekend. It's about the time honored tradition of the American Rifleman! O0
Just my opinion.
PH
I can't say I actually disagree with you, PH.
I used to shoot smallbore a bit myself, and like you, I leave my sling attached to the rifle. That's even if I'm using detachable swivels. Then again, I'm one of those old guys that usually uses a 1907 sling.
Spoken like a true Rifleman sir - AKA old school hard head like myself. :cool2:
It's like swinging two bats before you're up. Crack! - out of the park baby! O0
I feel better about a lowly 216 on the FDAQT with a rack-grade M1A and ball ammo, than a 249 with a $$$ SASS and 168grain BTHP Match ammo, but then that's just how God made me. :wb:
I agree with leaving the sling on the rifle .
My 1st AS when"ready on the right" was called I raised my hand ! they did not wait for me to sling up . I was behind nearly every course of fire :-[ but by sun afternoon I managed to get the sling on and score RM twice. The mil type rifle I used did not have quick detach M14. If the quick detch was a good idea ,Marine corp would have provided them.
Further as mentioned , I have seen Red hats who forgot how to use the sling ,which is another reason to not encourage it's use .
If someone is too old or too young or not instuctor material .in those cases I dont object to quick detach.
Took out "ye ole Dremmel tool" and cut down a pair of "J Hooks" to fit 1 inch pre-mounted swivels (CZ452FS). That sling gets used almost every Appleseed by someone else with a similar issue. I need to make another one.
I will cut down a couple j hooks for that reason - good idea O0
