Title: Smithville, TX December 3-4 AAR
Post by: didactic on December 05, 2011, 08:08:23 AM
Do they make a patch for "Wetseed?"  Not that I've heard of.

Good weekend, now that everybody has had a chance to dry out.  Even if not entirely pleasant at the time.  Fourteen shooters got soaked in the VERY welcome (This venue is only a few miles from the huge Labor Day fire near Bastrop!) Texas rain on Saturday, and four of them returned on Sunday, joined by two returnees who had signed on for Sunday only.

And two new Riflemen, Bob (one of the returnees from the October shoot) and Jason, who endured the soaking and cold (by Texas standards) breeze long enough to hear those lovely words, "We have among us a man who knows very well what he is about."   :~ ^:)^ ^:)^

LabRat will be joining this thread soon with more details.   :)

They say in Texas that if you don't like the weather, wait a minute and it will change. Unfortunately for the 'seeders, but fortunately for the tinderbox conditions, it changed from cold and wet to colder and wetter, but that didn't stop 14 shooters from coming out in the rain (no sunshine soldiers and summer patriots these!) to hear the Story and learn the art and science of rifle marksmanship.

Not much to add to didactic's fine report other than to say I was very gratified to see how everyone shrugged off the less than ideal weather and buckled down to show great improvement in skills over the weekend, learn the history and allow the instructors the satisfaction of awarding two new Rifleman patches.

A fine group of fellow Americans and impressive how everyone kept focus even while being soaked and squashing through the mud. They even managed to ignore the noise from yours truly's loudly chattering teeth!

Thanks to fellow redhat didactic and everyone for coming out and I look forward to seeing you again on the trail. Until then, to remember is to honor!

LabRat out.

Thanks to Labrat and Didactic for giving your time to us especially in such miserable conditions.  We really appreciate it!

I was enjoying the shooting and conversations, but my daughter Mattie was cold and we had to leave early. (I don't want to make her stay when it is no longer fun for her.) But I was very happy to have shot my first 210.  Even with my sling falling apart on just as the "Fire" command was giving, I was able to pull it out.  It's amazing what a difference it makes when you can actually focus on the front sight.  :) Guess I'm too old to use iron sights on a mid-length AR  :-\ but the new 10/22 is nice!

I look forward to getting out there again with you guys and for when Mattie earns her patch.

Thanks!

Good job John & Dean, I know you welcomed the rain, but would of preferred it on another day.

Labrat and Didactic,
Thank you very much for driving out in the weather to host the class.  Conditions were less than ideal, but I still had a lot of fun.  I'm impressed with the reliability my Ruger, given the weather.  I'm confident Brian and I will be out to another session soon, so he can earn his patch.  I'll see if I can round up some friends as well.
