Title: Shoot Bosses/Instructors: question on magazine safeties
Post by: dawg69 on October 15, 2011, 05:31:16 PM
I have been putting together a spare rifle to take to shoots with me and ran across a slight problem.  My spare rifle is a Remington 522 Viper.  I've had this gun for years and it has worked decent.  The issue is that the 522 has a magazine safety, so when the mag is not in, the rifle won't fire.  I'm trying to skirt around that so it can be dry fired during prep.  I tried to rework the internals to bypass it but it only works part of the time and makes the so-so trigger pull even heavier.  My potential solution is to make a "dummy" magazine out of wood or plastic to insert for dry fire practice.  My question is would this be allowed at a shoot?  I plan on making the dummy mag very visibly noticeable so it can't be confused with an actual one.

What say you?

Oh yeah, no answers of "get a different rifle".  I may someday, but money is tight and I already have this gun so I want to use it.

I have on two occasions used one of my Marlin 795 mags for a dry fire mag to loan out. I take a chamber flag and depress the follower, then pin it with a staple/paperclip, then wrap bright orange duct tape around the mag to secure the stable/clip. The mag is identifiable, inoperative, and works fine to dry fire with. It's your responsibility to inform every instructor what you have done, and why. Of course, the Shoot Boss will decide if it is acceptable or not.

The key items are "Inoperative" so it cannot be loaded by mistake, and "Identifiable" so every instructor knows at a glance it is a practice magazine.

Eventually I will just gut a handful of short seven round mags and paint them, but for now if I have a student who needs the dry fire practice, this works fine.

Is there a concern that dry firing could damage the firing pin with these two mentioned rifles?
BTW very creative solution O0

My 795 seems to be fine after loads of dryfire, but I have not actually pulled the firing pin to see if it is captured. I really dryfire very little anymore. I practice, but I do not worry about the physical trigger break. I find that practicing by increasing trigger pressure is practice enough and keeps me from learning, and anticipating, the trigger break.

I figured that out when dry firing my Ruger lowered my scores shooting my Ruger, and raised my scores shooting my Marlin. Now I just practice cadence and the squeeze.

Think about that for a minute, and it will make perfect sense.

YHJ,
Yes I learned the technique by shooting a Beeman R1
A few times I noticed jerking the trigger when safety was on :D

Thank You for sharing the procedure and such a clear description of same O0

I have no concern with dry fire damage on my Remington.  It just won't fire period without the mag.
