Title: Mosberg 801 Half-pint Plinkster, Bolt action
Post by: Charles McKinley on August 30, 2011, 11:44:54 PM
Hello,

Does anyone have any information on this rifle.
http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?ID=38&section=products

My daughter is struggling with the 10/22 mechanics. This looks like an ideal size, cocks with the bolt action but I cannot find a review on it or what clips fit it.

Has anyone used or seen this rifle in action.  I found one at Dunham's for $119.  I'm willing to be the Ginni pig but would feel better if I had more information.

Thank you

Its a single shot rifle so no need to worry about the mag. Since its a single shot you may want to look at a Marlin 795. Its much lighter and yet still semi auto. Slap a scope on it and youve got a nice LTR or Squirrel sniper,

Hi Doug,

Thank you for your reply.

It is a clip fed rifle that comes with a single feed dummy magazine.  I contacted Mossberg and the 10 round magazines are only $12 +S&H from them.  I think I will try it out.

Charlotte just doesn't have the manual dexterity for the semiauto mechanics (bolt relese, hold back) and I think a bolt will help her settle down and not shoot as fast.

Sorry Marlin fans but have bad memories of the jamomatic Marlin 60.  Plus you cannot hunt in Pennsylvania with a semiauto.

I think I will give it a try.

Anyone else shot this rifle or seen someone at a shoot with it?

Thanks

I've never shot one, but it is cute! Nice little gun. If you don't mind me asking, how old is your daughter? Mine is 12, and she had never loaded a 10/22 mag before her first AS. I sat her down a few nights before, a couple of mags and dummy ammo. Load, empty and reload. I built her her own 10/22 compact with some mods and had her sit and just fiddle with it to get the feel of the bolt release and hold back.

Hi Chad,

Charlotte just turned 10 and Colleen is 8.  Colleen can work the 10/22 much better than Charlotte.  Charlotte has some difficulty with manual dexterity.  I have each of them with 10/22 with the ATI colapsible stock.  I think she will like the working of the bolt much better and and the overall reduced size and better balance for her.

I talked with the man from Dunham's Friday and he said the rifle just came out at the SHOT show last fall.  He said that the magazines are olny available through Mossberg that he cannot get them from the distributor.  I planned on getting the rifle Saturday but life intervened.  I plan of getting it Sunday and will provide a full report.

In a word; SWEET!

I need to learn to get pictures off of my new phone but I was very pleased with the accuracy of the rifle.

The single feed dummy magazine works well.

The bolt is a little stiff but I have less that100 rounds through it.

I will get the magazines ordered soon.

Shot a 217 and a 228 with it last weekend!  I ordered 4 magazines from  Mosberg.  1 has a slight feed problem but the others work fine.  I will get a full reviews with pictures up soon.
